Great Night At VCS!
I don't know if it's just this track's configuration, the prep that's done on it or a combination of the two, but VCS is becoming consistently one of the raciest joints in the area. The first two heats just let you know that it was gonna be one of those nights. Both ended with you knowing which four cars had transferred, just not what the finishing order was. They were that close. In the B-Main, the fierce battle for the last transfer spot was intense and lasted nearly the entire race. And then the feature was full of twists and turns. Windom looked to be checking out from the drop of the green, but was reeled in and overtaken by Stanbrough, who in turn was caught and passed by a very fast Bryan Clauson. Just when it looked like BC was in the cat bird's seat, the two-time driver of the year fought back and seized back the top spot for good. It was much like a great prize fight. One of those where the seasoned champ gets knocked on his ass by the young challenger, yet gets up off the canvas to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. He's starting to look like the Jon Stanbrough we've all been accustomed to and whether you root for him or not, your ticket's worth a little more with that guy in the field. And everybody's season will be a little bit better with the emergence of VCS, under it's new management.
What a nice appetizer before the main course, Indiana Midget Week. Jerry |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
That was my first time back to VCS since the sprint cars have started to run there and wow. The heat races were some of the best races I have seen in a long time, the track prep was great and was very racey. I will definately be back more this year when my schedule allows.

Re: Great Night At VCS!

Re: Great Night At VCS!
Just to echo what Jerry already mentioned. The track was in excellent shape and it remained that way all night. The heats were very racey and the final semi transfer positions were in doubt up to the :22: A lot of racing through out the pack in the feature in addition to what Jerry already mentioned. I am glad that I made the trip over this evening. Now lets keep the weather away and get the program in tomorrow night.:6:
I also got to meet Shortbus and Lloyd. Shortbus looks great and he said that he feels great. In addition to Jerry I also saw other IOW members mainly Mowerman, Chuck Nungester & dirtnonwingfan. Andrew S. Quinn was in the house but I didn't get a chance to say hello. |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
I wish I could have gotten over to say hi to everyone. But with fighting with the timing light and then scoring, it didn't leave any time. Glad to see a great turnout of fans and racers

Re: Great Night At VCS!
D.Os Videos really don't do the place justice. That or the tracks never been prepped that good. From D.Os vids it looks like the top always goes away and it eventually did tonight, Im thinking a little Rake and water of the top prior to consis and that track will be a three grover all the time. Slash asked me what I thought of it. I said I don't know till I see some racin and that it kinda reminds me of the OLD BURG without a straightaway in sight.
The first two heats and I said I LOVE IT! Seriously I bet the top four were within a tenth across the line.. Feature was WINDOM rippin it as only a cushion rider can do. Only to be overtaken by a slightly better *ON THIS NIGHT* Cushion Rider B. CLauson. Jon actually grabbed second from BC early but BC hung it out and took off, Ran down Windom and was running off untill the silent one ran the middle to perfection and took the lead and never relinquished. I rode my Bike today, Starting with a 50 mile ride to KY and back. The total trip each way from Kings Island Ohio to VCS was 237 miles. In totall I got over 500 miles in on the bike. Spent about 5*GREAT* hours at VCS, Drove all the way home on the bike following the quickest Semis I could find, (ILL let them hit the night critters thank you very much) and made it home at 5am. I didn't rush stopping several times which made the ride home much less exhausting than the ride up. Stopped at a rest area in Batesville IN and when I came out it was drizzling. I was like "GO EAST MIDDLE AGED MAN!" "GO EAST" five miles own the road and the drizzle ceased and the rest of my ride was dry till I opened the garage door, Walked the bike inside, wiped it down and walked out of the garage to a steady rain :) I lucked out! I really don't know how so many tracks can survive saturday night racing. I think VCS will be one that does! It was nice to see Mike, Lloyd, The Short Bus! probably going to have to rest up a bit for Terre sat. Finally met Mowerman for a short and was that you Andrew.S Quinn I was chatting with most of the night? P.S. Thanks for a great time. VCS and the other fans in attendance. Chuck, feelings slightly Slashed :) And wondering how many qualification laps Nunn's gonna give em :) |

I start work at 4am Indy time,so I need to go to a fast paced program on any night I go,and have to work the next day. I did manage about 1 1/2 hrs of sleep in my works parking lot. Have to note that concessions are very reasonable, got a cheeseburger, water, and fries for $5.00. One of my Aussie buddys told me he had to ask the price again when he bought a drink and a hot dog ,as he thought he wasnt getting charged properly,as it was to reasonable a price for him. There were a few glitches during the night, and hopefully they will be worked on for keeping the program moving along, but as noted, the racing was top notch. Hopefully the rest on Illinois Sprintweek is a success as well. I wanted to do all of their races, but with conflicts in my own back yard,I cant do it this year. |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
My first visit this year what amazed me the most while Sean Buckley(Jack Slash) & myself were shooting the Breeze in the Pits. A Speedway Official on a four wheeler came up to us and thanked us for coming and hoped we have a good time and please come back you don't see that much anymore.
and Yes I had a good time and will go Back oh and Shortbus I did spot you high on your throne from across the Track Good to see you old Friend will try and catch up with you at Bloomington Friday |
Re: Great Night At VCS!

Re: Great Night At VCS!
I officially wanted to toss the timing system out the announcers booth door. I don't think I've ever been as frustrated at a race track

Re: Great Night At VCS!
While everyone is raving about how good the sprint races were, I feel the mods should get a shout out for putting on an awesome feature, as well. I hate this cliche, but you could've thrown a blanket on the top 3 in their main event.

Re: Great Night At VCS!
I thought it was a tremendous opener for sprint week. BUT, now for some of the bad points. Get rid of the timing light... TRANSPONDERS! I thought they were supposed to get the racing underway at 7:00... The 1st qualifier didn't hit the track until 8:00!
Back to the question that we'll baffle me ... How does Stanbrough find moisture in what looks to be a drying track?? He started low, then moved up... then moved a little higher... a little higher, then took off and hid from everyone. That's why he's the best! |

My first trip to VCS and it was worth the 2-1/2 hr trip. That track was "bad fast"! Beautiful track last night, crew did a great job! All it would of took was one yellow and the Silent Gasser would of had his hands full of the Silent Creeper (Brady Short). Wow, great night!! I say put up some more stands and run for big money at this track, its obvious the sprint drivers will come to this joint!

Maybe Chris or someone else can answer this for me. I have a question about the transfers last night at VCS. In the first heat Wissmiller broke at the finish. The announcer said that Bobby East, the fifth place finisher in heat one, would move up and transfer. I didn't think this was correct.
When they were getting ready to start the semi, the announcer said that they would be taking 5 from the semi to the feature. This I thought was the correct procedure when a heat transfer scratches. However, Bobby East didn't start the semi nor did he start the feature. Any ideas?:16 Did I miss something here? :10: Add on Question. Where the hell was Pat O'Connor fan last night. Racing in his own back yard and he is a no show. What gives Steve????????????????? |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
I didn't go last night because my butt is still dragging from travelling to air shows last week in Tennessee, where Kim and I got to fly in a B-17 (World War II bomber) that was built in 1945 - darn near as old as me, then Pennsylvania, and finally Indiana. Had I known in advance that Bill and Lloyd were going to be there, I would have managed to get my tired old self over there. Bill :6: can get there shortly after his surgery, and I :7: wimped out a couple days after my trip. You da man, Shortbus!:9:

They were saying that he would have moved up, personally I would have taken an extra car out of the B-Main, but they were going to put him in from what I heard.

Looks like it was a pretty stout field. Congrats to Team Foxco! Hopefully they can start turning the year around. I was almost in disbelief at Haubstadt Sat.:(

Re: Great Night At VCS!
Glad everybody enjoyed the night.
Make plans to come to the Racin'-Fest Sept 5th. Hero & Hot Dog Quals - Sprints & Mods. Plus more feature fun. :32: |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
Just woke up at 2pm after that 24hour day. I failed to mention Brady Shorts stellar run.
Was the feature only 25 laps? Thats one thing I don't miss about the smaller tracks of races going super quick. THATS 30 lap feature felt like a event! Chuck, sadly its a track I won't be making very often except maybe other weekday shows. |

The track prep was great and the drivers were able to run pretty much anyplace on the surface and still perform well. 30 laps without a yellow probably tells the story. Great night and I will return no doubt. Now the biggest problem that I have is which direction to go for my Saturday night racing fix. Lawrenceburg or Danville. I guess I will have to roll the dice.;) |
Re: Great Night At VCS!
You're right, illiNOISE! After getting home at 1:00 am, 5:15 came a bit too early! But it was WELL worth it!!

Re: Great Night At VCS!
Last night was my second night at VCS, but far from my last. The first was the rainout. I agree with all of the good things everyone else has posted here. I have never met so many IOWers anywhere as I did those two nights. It was great to meet all of you, especially Bill. Sorry the car Bill was pitting for had such bad luck.
I would like to give a shout out to young Blake Nimee, driver of the bright yellow #79. I have had the opportunity to talk to him twice in the pits and was very impressed. Really nice young man. He is 15 and last night the announcer (our own Mr. Nunn) said that was the 9th time he had been in a sprint car. He had a tough time in his heat, but then others were the current VCS point leader Brett Triplett, Scotty Weir, Casey Shuman, Shane Cottle and Rickie Williams, so it wasn't exactly a cream puff heat. In the semi he started 6th and moved up, got passed and was back in 6th at one time. Rather than giving up, he kept on it and ended up taking 2nd in the "B" on the last lap. Started 19th in the "A" and finished 12th. I suggest you keep an eye on this young man. I was also very happy with the announcing. I keep records of who is driving what car, starting where, etc. First, the sound system is as good as any I have heard. I think it is at least as good as my previous standard, Lawrenceburg, if not better. Chris spoke clearly and slowly enough to be understood and give time to write down the information. The practice some announcers have of running through 79 pieces of information about each driver, car, engine, chassis, spark plug brand, sponsors, phase of the moon the driver was born under, so fast they appear to be doing it because they think they are supposed to rather than to let us know who is driving what and where they are starting (usually done after the cars are all on the track) drives me nuts. They usually do it for the heats, same thing for the "B" if the driver is in that, and then for the "A". Good job Chris, and thanks to the speedway for one more fan-friendly feature. Also, no one has mentioned the free coffee. When was the last time you saw anything free at a track? Also clean rest rooms. Lastly, I have been impressed with the fans. VCS fans are a nice, friendly, knowledgeable bunch of folks. I have had good conversations with about everyone around me both times I have been there. No rowdy drunks, just good people. The older I get, the more that means to me. Great racing, great surroundings, I couldn't be more pleased. My list of 2 favorite tracks just got one bigger. If you haven't been to VCS, you should go. |

My only complaint with Mr. Nunn and yes their has to be one to be fair. Is a couple times he didn't give the results. YES we were confused on who got what possition in a couple heats it was that close. Otherwise. Great Job

Re: Great Night At VCS!
Frank.... It was nice meeting you too! You're correct... We didn't have the best of luck... but we'll try again next time.
The race track was the best I've seen all year. As for sprint car qualifying... I have one suggestion, when the timing equipment screws up that much... pull out the trusty ole stop watch and manually write the times down. If no one knows the timing equipment is screwed up, then no one knows you're really using a stop watch. ;) We all know it's been done before. Overall, it was a good night of racing. |

uh, guys I didn't announce last night lol I was scoring :)
