Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
There was some talk of a couple non-wing 1000cc mini-sprint races for this season, Is this still possible?
I would love to see one of the two series go to non-wing all the time. I am in my 1st year of mini-sprints after not racing for 14 years. Money is tight and had alot to do with my choice to run a mini-sprint, and these cars are very afordable to purchase and run. Except for the wing! 2 top wings cost more than my engine (2007 Honda 1000rr). I broke a spindal the first night out and just about had a tommy-tip-over that would of cost me $400 for a new wing. I can't be the only one with a 1000cc that wants to run non-wing. I wish Bakersfield wasn't almost a 3 hour drive, they have a great non-wing class with plenty of cars. |
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I have wondered why they dont run nonwing, It would limit the advantage of high dollar motors and reduce cost by not having to buy the wings.

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
The cars are a blast to run without the roof. We ran in Duquoin in January and February of 07 and it was by far the most competitive and most fun mini-sprint racing I've been involved in. If a nonwing race was held on one of the tracks near here (Lawrenceburg, North Vernon, Gas City, Moler, Osgood, etc...) I would definately dust off the 1000 car I have stored in the corner of the garage that has sat all year and is for sale.
I believe reasons that few (or nobody) has tried to put together races include. - support from wing companies, parts distributors to the series - speeds to put up better laps on the bigger tracks- only a few tenths off of non wing 410s at Lawrenceburg - the safety aspect of absorbing energy in a crash - there is already a large class of motorcycle powered non wing cars with the two tq series - from what I understand the local tracks that run non wing sprints like the winged mini sprint as support to show the fans both types of open wheel cars Maybe motorsportspr, Bill May, or somebodysmam could weigh in as they certainly have more involvement with these cars. |

Engines wouldn't be an issue on the big tracks any more then they are now. You have the thing wide open at lawrenceburg pulling 12 thousand rpms now and never letting the engine settle back down. If you had to peddle the car a little bit engine life would grow. And as long as good seats and safety equipment is used I don't see it being more dangerous than running winged cars on the big tracks.

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Im a wing guy but i would like to try a few non wing shows at the smaller tracks, but would hate to take that nice wing feeling away at the big tracks

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I would love to do some non-wing races. We did a few with the old Allstar Midget group and they were always a lot of fun. There was a discussion last year of a possible mini series without the wings. Didn't seem to get any traction. Agree that the smaller tracks would be the best place. Osgood is this weekend - would be a great chance to try it out.

I have been working on a few options, The problem I am having is most want a big purse and the tracks don't want to stick their necks out and have a low car count. I understand every one wants to race for as much as they can, but we need to walk before we can run. Look me up at any AMSA race and we can talk about this more.

Non wing at bloomington would be a good show to watch!

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I thought about running a TQ, but the engines to me are behind the times. A good TQ engine alone cost more than I have in my whole car. You can get a low mile 1000cc engine all day long for $1000 to $2000. I paid less than that for my engine and it's a 2007 and had only 2000 miles on it. I got it on e-bay and parts are everywhere (headers, air boxes, wire harness, ect). I get to the track, flip the switch, and my engine adjusts to the conds. Truley plug-n-play. I don't understand why going through all the trouble to have the transmision cut off the engine, and then run hilborn injection. I think if the TQ's were like the Kenyon Midgets where you keep the trans and keep them stock 1000cc, there would be 60 car count TQ races again. TQ's have a long history and have been around a long time and that helps them, but mini-sprints can use more common midget parts and that is a huge plus. I liked the TQ pay back also. It's only $400 to win, but it is $100 to start and climbs from 18th on up. If it wasn't for the engines I probley would have bought a TQ.
I agree with wings at the Burg, that place is fast! As far as the purse goes the new TQ series has it right to me. The winner of the race doesn't keep a series going, it's the cars that can show up every race that carry a series. $100 to start and in the future $40 for non-qualifiers, is enough to keep one of these cars going. I can pay for my pitpass, entry fee, and a little gas in the truck and a couple cheseburgers for a $100. I would be cool with $40 to start and $200 to win to get started. We have a free weekend Sept 25th - 27th where both series are off, mabey try to put something together? |
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Cincy, you don't have to run one of those 836 Honda's, I've been running a Yamaha 600r, since 05, it now has over 60 nights if racing on it, and is very competitive, I built it as a dummy, out of parts from different engines off Ebay, really never intended to run it, all it's had is a new set of plugs in that time, so don't let the engine thing run you off, this season we have at least 1 Kaw, 600, a Suzuki 600, and my Yamaha 600r, not the R6, which is still in the car, from 05. It is new technology, at a fraction of the cost, you still have to cut and plate the engine to run the QC, but you don't need aftermarket anything, just bolt it in, and go. If you feel the need, you can go to 700cc, but with most of these engines, enough parts will interchange, you still don't have a bunch in them, and it's all stock parts. Rod bolts for mine are $2.50 ea, as compared to $300.00 a set for aftermarket pcs. Bob

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I wouldnt mind doing some non-wing again, we went to Chandler last year with the MMSA it was alot of fun, the car count was not great but a long drive could have been a big part of that. I doubt you ever see them at salem we tried that there once in 600's and it ended up in a pretty bad crash for a guy who ended up in the hospital, I think it kinda spooked Mason. L-burg is too big as slide22 stated, but it will eat motors wing or nonwing, tracks that size never let the car breath, we may see some of that at brownstown. Anyways if Bill or Jerry decide to put something together let me know!!!

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I just had a stroke of genious! Paragon would be almost a perfect track for the 1000cc cars to run non wing!!!

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Needs to be on an off week not during the points season. AMSA has June 13 to July 10 off, and MMSA has off June 6 thro the 19. We should approach moler he’s a supporter of the cars we just need to make sure we can get cars to show.

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
went to paragon last year after the season(practice day), we put are minisprints in with the full size cars on the slick track we were just as fast if not faster than the big cars, a couple six hundreds cam and they were fast too, its perfect size and pretty wide, maybe the two series can have a border war.

Moler would be cool! We need to get together this weekend at the 'Burg & Osgood and pick a date or two. If I know the dates I got a couple people I can talk to about sponsoring the race. I will be at both races this weekend. Carl Cruse #4

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
We might be able to get a couple races at 35 raceway,I will talk to him if you want me to. they do have a court ordered muffler rule its a autozone muffler that cost $30 ,its a 1/5 track .
|
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I am cool with having to buy a muffler. 35 would be great!!!

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Have you guys thought about pay, your not going to get an AMSA or MMSA pay at a local show and that may drive away some cars.

I talked to Tony at 35 Raceway he is interested running us,would like to know some kind of car count if possible. also slide22 that race was sponsored not all money from the track,I'm working on some sponsors to help out.

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
We have scheduled a race at 35 on June 20th for non wing. The purse will depend on car count, if we have 12 to 15 cars I think every one will be happy with the pay out. we have a few sponsers already if you know any one who would like to help let me know. From the response I have been getting I am soue we will have at least 12 cars for sure If every one comes that said they would we could have more than 20. This track will be a blast non wing. I will give details at L-burg this Sat.
|
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Is it possible to have the race 1 week later on the 27th? There are no races scheduled on that Sat. The 20th is a MMSA race at Twin Cities. Small car counts at both races is not going to help anybody.
|
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
we tried to get the 27th but couldn't
|
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
I really doubt any of the MMSA cars would support this race anyhow. We have some sponsers lined up if you know anyone who would help let me know. It looks like we are going to have at least 20 cars as of now
|
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Actually I was wanting to go to this race, but since it does over schedule the MMSA show, and it is a 6.5 pull we wont be able to make it.-andy

Tony I appreciate you checking map quest :6:, however we made the trip about 4 times last year. Cincy bypass traffic, and dually hooked to a 40' trailer, we never made it less than six hours. Its a tough track to make from here, would be great to get a spot somewhere on the two states borders maybe like osgood or columbus (IN), moler is a little big but I'd do that. Anyways thanks again for the directions and the good luck wish, will need it!! alot of competition this year!
Thanks Andy Bradley #86 |
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints

Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
Are they going to run the standard set of rules? Example, car weight and so on.
---------- Post added at 08:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:59 AM ---------- And is this a sure thing for June 20th? I was wondering, because it was not on the Raceway 35 web site. |
Re: Non-Wing 1000cc Mini-Sprints
