Google Earth THAT

I was goofing around on Google Earth and looked up THAT. I do not know how old the image is, but I expected to see weeds growing in the track and poor condition.

What I saw was a pit full of haulers and what seems to be a couple of Mods on the track. The track had taken rubber so they must of run a bunch of laps.

What was strange also, there seem not be any spectators. No cars parked anywhere except the pit area and a few around the office.

Was this some kind of test session?

Does anyone know when this image was shot and what was going on?

If I pan over to my house, Don, I can see the image is at least three years old. My wood fence isn't there yet and I can see a car I got rid of a long time ago.

I pulled Gas City and it looks like they are having a practice day. And when I went to Kokomo it looked like they were in their reconstruction mode. Not to say that they were all imaged on the same day, but if they were it would at least narrow the year down since Kokomo was rebuilding.

Its kinda cool that there were cars on two different tracks at the time of the shots.

Yes, it looks to be a weekend too judging from the amount of cars in the mall parking lot.

I never knew there was a go kart track northwest of THAT, (glad the kids didn't know either) although we raced karts on the track just south of the 1/2 mile a few years back with the SIRA. The track sure seemed bigger then.

And if you look up Lawrenceburg Speedway you don't have any race cars. Just a whole lot of water!

I still wonder why all the haulers in the pits and no spectators?

What was going on?

It actually looks like a sprint/midget on the track being pushed off.

I am thinking some kind of practice day. If the gas City image is the same day it might make sense. Not many people there also. If memory serves right some practice days only open the pits. Memory is very iffy most of the time though.

This is funny we where playing with this at work today also. The images we have from around here are only about 18 months old.

The concrete wall is complete in that map... we used to cut through the pits to get to the go-kart track:emote20:, i can see the giant pile of the old guardrail at the back of the pits...

If I remember right from my GIS days, Indiana has always had pretty good imagery, and were good about updating it. If you play with google maps, notice Indiana on google maps, their imagery is much better than IL's...

That is because there is nothing worth looking at in IL.:rolling:

Those images are from the 2005 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP)

The image of THAT has to be from 2004 or later because when I scan up to the 1/4 midget track the new concession is built and the trees have been cleared from the Coke plant lot to the north.

The small oval just below the track (with the straigtaways running parallel with the big track) is the go kart track. They race on Friday nights all summer. Once a month they run on Saturday night. It's neat for the fans because you can watch their races from the top of the main grandstands during any down time. It's a pain for the competitors though, as you neeed to use an alternate entrance to the pits off of the backstretch.

The even smaller oval (with the straigtaways running perpendicular to the big track) is in the middle of the pit parking lot. I'm not sure what it was used for but you can still see what's left of it today.

The picture of our house was taken on a Saturday probably in 2005, because the wife and mother-in-law are having a yard sale and the in-laws moved to Florida the winter of 05 and haven't been back since!

I'm lovin' it!
