Re: Tony barhorst
Pretty sad commentary on the popularity of our sport. We all like to think short track racing a BIG DEAL. Well it is ,,,to us maybe, no one else tho! Reminds me of my friends who surfs on the great lakes. Talk about a niche sport! Oh yea, a local surf shop sponsors a message board where the surfers constantly bash each other. SOUND FAMILAR?

Re: Tony barhorst
SHORT TRACK RACING IS HUGE!!...The newsprint business is slowing...but how many people get the NSSN online now? The ads and all should be in there.
Here is a bit of trivia: I know Chris Economaki would drop off free copies of the NSSN to most of the Bob Evans restaurants in Indianapolis when he arrived for the month of May. |

"Because its a public forum! If you only wanna talk to tony, then you use the personal message system"(typical hateful answer on this board). I get in on it because its funny to me(maybe some others). I'm not doing it to be a dik or to be mean. Im half of your age, and I can joke about it or wait for somebody else to get on here and make it negitive. I love the fact that you don't care!

If you wanted this message to go to Tony only, then send a private message. If you post in a public forum.... you should expect the public to join in. :D |

Hey Duke, I've been getting NSSN for going on 32 years now. That's where I used to read about your racing heroics. And I still have both copies.....

Re: Tony barhorst
I think the decline of print circulation is true everywhere. The only reason I still get NSSN is for the columns including Chris's and the local results you don't find easily elsewhere. My wife and I were both contributors for about 10 years and we still paid to get the paper. This board and others like it are also part of the reason for the decline like Craigs List is to the daily newspaper. You don't need to wait for NSSN anymore when you can go to the USAC website and watch it live. It's just the way things are today and who knows what will happen to NSSN when there is no longer a column by Chris. My good friend says he still gets it just to check the obituaries to make sure his name isn't in there
Vern Plotts Anyone want to buy about 45 years of NSSN? |

I'd like your opinon because you've been successful. Tony I respect your opinion as a promoter. I've been to your shows as both a spectator and a crewman. I was especially impressed with your Boswell show. What I was trying to say was filling the stands for a few special shows is different than doing it consistently, all season long. I'm sure the minor league baseball team in South Bend averages better attendence per game than say any of the surrounding tracks. New paris, Plymouth, M-40 or Hartford. Can a track support 50 or 60 dates a year? I highly doubt it. You know, and I know that most promoters are/were successful in another business. They aren't stupid. The general public doesen't know a the differnce between a sprint, midget or a late model. This and segmentation among fans of different types of cars, causes a promoter to really scrutinize his advertising budget. Thanks , I didn't know that about Economaki. Good marketing. Duke, I think you need to understand that not every post that is made on this board is directed to you. Some people just feel like expressing themselves. Right field or not, they have something to say... and asking someone "*** are you talking about" causes people not to post and encourages personal attacks.
You know, you could've simply stated.... Hey man, I don't understand the point your trying to make. That simple statement would have eliminated this conversation completely. |
Re: Tony barhorst
Uncle Buck,
I will tell you the truth...I can see why some event promoters do not advertise much...because many times the return on your dollar is not worth it. It used to be you only had three television networks, radio and newspaper. It is now much harder to reach the masses, with cable and the internet segmenting the audience. It is very easy to overspend on advertising. I plan on running an ad in the NSSN Track guide for the Speedrome races...and maybe the Indy Star. I am going to call the Star today..but I can tell you it will be expensive. This thread has been entertaining, and that is the goal on IOW...one KEY thing for everyone to remember...Lets have fun with the good natured zingers...and not take this stuff to seriously where it gets to be hateful. I think zingers are ok....but no personal attacks...I thought it was funny when Duke wondered ***....lol But Uncle Buck had a right to chime in also...It looks like he doesn't see much short track promotion in the area he is from...That market is VERY expensive....racing probably gets the niche sport treatment like surfing up there. If someone zings you...zing em back...but not in a hurtfull way. Have fun with it I have not always practiced this...but I find when I do...I have a better time. I will also say this...LET DUKE BE DUKE! |

Your correct, the advertising in my home area is very expensive, as I'm sure any uban area is, such as Indy. I once had a PR guy tell me he didn't care to spend his advertising budget on ads in trade papers because only the hard core fan reads them. He said local advertising was more effective in bringing in fans to a track. This man had done pr work for both weekly racing at a track(Illiana) and the short lived IRA ? series. (old usac cars). This was of course pre- internet. It seems to me you bring in alot of hard core, traveling fans to your races, like during sprint week and indoors. Would your advertising method be different if it was a weekly show you were promoting? I must admit I knew you promoted the heck out of the Boswell shows and the front gate , I hope, showed it. When you brought in that car crushing, fire breathing, dinasour thing, thats all the driver's 4 year old son could talk about. I imagine a lot of other kids felt the same way! We stopped working on the car to watch it! Thanks for the info,. I always try to understand the promoters view of things. I for one always give them the benefit of doubt. Promoting is a massive undertaking frought with alot of pitfalls. Dale Weis |
