Would you?
Would you...pay $30 gen admission/$45 pit pass...struggle to find a decent seat in 40 degree weather...sit through 3 other support classes heat race...on a black slick track??...If the some of the best in the country were there and the race paid $10,000 to the feature winner??

Re: Would you?
Is it indoors? I don't go outdoors when the temp is less than 60 degF (or when it's over 75).

Re: Would you?
Its that imaginary line that people have to cross to deem if a show is worth making or not. (Travel, Length ect all play into the expense.) Usually the gate is a MINOR Expense to seeing a show but it is many times the deciding factor.
I got no problem paying 30 for a regular show if the teams get paid well and I can expect 30 cars with many top teams. Quite honestly this season will be tough to fill fields in all but the most overyly attended classes (Modifieds) at many tracks. Chuck, wondering what this post was about? Are Bombers the headliners with Legends, 600s and Micros the supports? |
Re: Would you?
I did and i had mediocre seats at best and i am a huge non-wing fan and it was the best feature i have probably ever seen :thumb to the Lucas Oil Late Models

You have fun Pine, wish I could go to Charlott!
I was all ready to go and they wanted me to work, I didn't have to say yes but the next time I may have to say no. Quote:

Re: Would you?
I think it should be said that it is March, and many of us have had a long cold winter. My last race was the Rumble series events, and after 5 indoor shows, it is nice to get outdoors. I went, the modified heat races dragged on forever. The feature didn't start until 11:35 and was over by 12:00. I drove 13 hours total. Didn't spend a dime on food, and wouldn't have as the concession lines seemed to be too long all the time. Met some new friends from Illinois. Also I think it was my 80th race track. I don't get to add too many tracks too that list. With Manzy closing, I think its good to see a lot of the older tracks, and I try to do my small part.
Standing room only, with relatively few seats isn't that big of a stretch. The pits were packed as well. Would I do this in July or August? Probably not. If you want to take a gander my shots are on my site:apexonephoto.com in this gallery Indiana Icebreaker. Thanks for looking James |
Re: Would you?
I find this thread very interesting. It is almost the same as this weekend's event at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas. They ran the WoO Late Models. Practice on Thursday night, qualifying on Friday and the semis and 100 lap feature on Saturday. Support classes on Friday were the modifieds, limited modifieds and pure stocks. Saturday, they had the mods and limited mods again, with the hobby stocks.
I have to say that the track held up extremely well on both nights; tacky as hell. A pretty big set of ruts high in turn one made for some exciting racing in the late model heats. I, too, thought that it was too many support classes. I am still leaning that way, but they did get all the late model racing done in a reasonable time. There were, however, over 40 limited mods on Friday, and about 35 on Saturday. Oh, big winners were Shannon Babb in the Late Models, taking home US$20K for his win. On Friday, former Silver Crown Champion Paul White won both the modified and limited modified features. On Saturday, he was racing down the road at Houston Raceway Park and repeated the effort. I do have pictures of the late model and support classes on my website. Oh, and the answer is, yes, I would have dropped that much coin. Those happen to be the prices charged for the Battleground show on Saturday. |
Re: Would you?
NO. And I live 90 minutes from Charlotte and I won't be there this weekend. I think the gate is $49 if you don't buy in advance.
Maybe if I hadn't already watched most of these drivers for years and usually paid $15-20 to see the same $10k show, I might entertain it. But, having seen all this before, I have to ask "What else am I getting for my extra $10-15?" The answer is: Nothing. In almost all cases, it's the same track, the same bleachers, the same parking, the same purse, the same drivers, the same long food lines for so-so food, the same foul restrooms. Except I'm having to pay almost double what I was paying only a few years ago. Have my wages doubled in the last three years? Hell NO. |
Re: Would you?
I am going to respond to this thread........
And apologize for the delays and the insane amount of cars we had. Two classes at the most would have been the best. |
Re: Would you?
NO- I like racing, but I really hate the cold more.
|
Re: Would you?
The 5wide action was probably some of the best racing I have seen in a really long time
|
Re: Would you?
I did and would again, best racing I've watched in a while. Not a Mod fan but the brownstown guys are normally better drivers than they showed, food lines were bad but the track was good and racing made it well worth the money. I would like to see a MSCS race and Lucas late model together that would be awesome:applaud:.

Re: Would you?
I guess the main reason I started this thread was to get a general idea of how hardcore Indiana sprint fans are..
Me and a few others including Jimmy Light constantly wonder how a dirt late model race pays such a large purse. How/Why is it that an average USAC sprint race, which in my eyes has the best product in the country, only pays $4,000-to-win and struggle to fill the stands..meanwhile a typical Lucas Oil or World of Outlaws late model race pays $7-10,000-to-win and its pretty tough to find an open seat. Personally, I think we are a little spoiled getting to watch guys like Darland, Stanbrough, and Cottle duke it out for $1,400-to-win while we only paid $12-15 to get in...So, my next question is...Is it that the big purses, bring the big drivers, which brings the big crowds...or is it that the big crowds, produce the big purses, which brings in the big drivers?? And to answer my own question, $45 was a small price to pay to see Bloomer, Cook and Pearson goin' 3-wide with Jimmy Owens and McDowell right there, and how bout Brad Neat 20th to 4th. |

1) The Mopar Million only drew 70 cars for $200,000 to win. The World 100 only pays $37,000 to win and regularly draws 200 cars. What incentive is there to pay the extra purse when the car count is not nearly comparable? 2) Fans already complain about a $20 ticket. if you want to see WoO type purses, be prepared to pay WoO type ticket prices. The fans are equally as culpable as the teams in holding back increases in purse. |
Re: Would you?
Dirt late models pull in large crowd counts because they have a rabid fan base (just read 4m for a few years and you'll see). You also have to remember that the current high-tech DLM evolved from ordinary stock chassis late models over a relatively short time period. Sprints/Midgets are still basically what they've always been.
Stock cars are found everywhere in the country, open wheel is only in select places and non-wing is even scarcer (mostly Indiana and Cali). Non wing sprints are kind of like good mustard based BBQ, you only find it in one place in the country. Enjoy it while you are there. IMO, the best place a race fan could live is Ohio. You would be living in the open wheel belt of IN, OH, PA. Non wing action to the West and the Posse to the East. Ohio and western PA are loaded with great weekly dirt late model tracks. Plus, if you need to see some asphalt action, you've got great tracks like Toledo, Winchester, Salem and Sandusky to choose from. Great place for a short track race fan. |

Re: Would you?
what did you think of the feature spridge?? or did you get too cold and leave early?
|
Re: Would you?
I'm the wrong person to ask. Two years ago, we went to watch the Reds play during the first week of the season. The temp was below 40, and it flurried snow during the game. We stayed all 9 innings. :kookoo By the time we bought tickets for 4 people, paid for parking, a little bit of food, souvenirs for the kids and the gas to get to Cincinnati, we spent way more than I ever have to go to a race.

Re: Would you?
I did, and I would do it again. My 10 year old daughter and I woke up in New Boston, Illinois Saturday morning, and decided to cut our family visit short by a day. We spent 6-1/2 hours on the road to get back home to see the Icebreaker Saturday night. I'm proud to say that she lasted until after the LM feature, and wanted to stay longer, but Daddy was too cold! It was some of the best racing I've ever seen. I would absolutely do it for a sprint car race as well.
I'll remember this weekend very fondly when she get's to be to "cool" to go to the races with her Dad. |
