My favorite drivers are nice on & off the track. It doesn't hurt things if they win every now & then, but that's not a requirement. They also need to be a clean racer & not try to boot the other cars off the track. Just an all-around nice person.

I like the way Obie said it but I also like the under dogs. It’s always nice to see people like Hud Cone, Kyle Cummins, Arin McIntosh, Chase Stockon (did I spell Stockon right Sam?) and others do more with less. It’s always cool to see these guys mix it up with the high $$$ usac guys.

I've been watching racing for a long time and don't know if I ever remember a racer that has electrified race fans and has been liked by the masses, more than Daron Clayton. He flat out owns the crowd at Haubstadt and pretty much does at Terre Haute, too.

I've never met anybody that says they don't like Shane Cottle. And there's only one known Dave Darland hater in the World.

And on the other side of the coin, Kevin Swindell is as much of a universally disliked driver, as I've ever seen.

Obie pretty much nailed it. I also went by how drivers treated my kids when they were growing up. Thats why Stewart is aces by me , along with Dave Darland. They always treated my boys good.

A vague sense that you really know who they are based on a collection of anecdotes and maybe in a few cases a real personal experience with them

As a kid I was a fan of Rich Vogler and that pretty much led to be a fan of the drivers that ran for Hoffman after Rich. I think my first racing t shirt was from when Steve Butler ran the Hoffman car. I was also a fan of Kevin Briscoe at weekly shows at Haubstadt. Now its basically a hometown deal and seeing Levi become a champion in a series that I grew up watching Jeff Gordon, Kenny Irwin and Tony Stewart race in.

Driving style is a huge thing that helps determine if fans boo or cheer them. Name recognition is another. Quattro is a joke for a racer but fans pull for him because of that last name he has. Same with Earnhardt Jr. Jr is nothing to above a mid pack driver in seemingly good equipment but that last name gets the fans in. Danica is a "fan favorite" for two reasons: Women like her because she is a female doing a mans thing on a grand, highly visable stage and guys like her because to some they think she is hot (not me). She is a midpack driver in second tier equipment.

Myself, I cheer for drivers I know personally or have followed for years because they can go out and do the job that needs to be done and do it the way I think it should be done. Some of those I know are Mike Hess, Rich Corson, Mike Deavers, Chad Branson, and John Draper. Some I pull for just because of their driving style are Dave Darland, Tracy Hines, Russ Gamester, Terry McCarl, Johnny Parsons Jr (sadly now retired :( ) Ed Carpenter and Buddy Lazier to name a few.

Also, local drivers will always get my support: Chris Windom, A.J.Fike, Justin Allgaier, Donnie Lehman and Randy Bateman

I'll just mention guys I've booed or have booed in the past. There's a lot of drivers that I like for different reasons.

Some years ago like most others, I loved to boo Steve Kinser because he just won so damn much. Now I'm finding myself supporting him some esp. after this weekend in Chico as he gained a lot of points on Donny "Kinser" and is now in second. A 24th to 5th run on Fri. night after going to a back up car, the old man still has some fire left in him.

I changed my tune towards Danny Lasoski some time ago, he started acting like a hot shot when he got with Stewart. I know I'm not the only one either.

I know when I picked my FAVE drivers. I was always hooked by the way they wheeled the car on the track. Then when I got to meet them it cemented my choices.

I would have to agree with the above quote. Hard charging sprint car drivers always make an impression. My favorite, who just retired, was Tony Jones with USAC/CRA. Knowing that he was the son of "Bubby" didn't hurt either I suppose, but he was Mr. Excitement. But that wasn't his only quality, he was also a terrific ambassador and spokesman for sprint car racing. In the pits after the races he always had the most fans waiting to talk with him. Lined up were old timers, yuppies, parents, grandparents and most of all the small children. Tony would sign autographs and take his time answering every one of the questions thrown his way. And it was done with great patience. But where he stood, heads above anyone else, was the time he spent with the young children. Having his picture taken with the little ones and watching the looks on their faces was priceless. Perris track announcer Scott D. has called Tony, "the most popular driver to have ever raced at Perris". And he definetely was both on and off the track.

I might not be happy at times with certain drivers, but I would never boo someone that straps into those powerful race cars. I admire them all.

Re: Fan Favorites?

Funny story on booing drivers.

In my younger years my brother & I used travel to the races together. We were really into it, and at the time we weren't afraid to show our likes or dislikes of a driver.

One night our hometown favorite nearly pulled off a great pass during an All Star show. Contact was made with another driver, resulting in the end of the race for our driver (and frame of the car for that matter). For the next couple years, any time the "other" driver would take the track we would make enough noise to make the grandstands fall down. One day we walked through the pits and joked with our driver how we'd booed the other guy since the day they collided. Our driver replied that the two were actually friends and that was a move he (our hero) never should have made. We quit booing.

For us old farts the best driver I ever saw with fans was Tom Bigelow. He was ALWAYS the last guy to leave the track. He was signing autographs and talking to the fans as soon as the races were over.
