Devin
You forgot the part about working the simulators, I am Jeff Ziesemer a race fan who thinks sprint car racing is like crack, was introduced to this sport by my Dad. Mainly attend Lawrenceburg and USAC events. By Devins standards I am an old man but by many on this board I am a whipper snapper. Some of the nicest people I have ever met have been at the track.

I am Carey Akin, of Manvel Texas. I attended my first race at Hangtown Speedway back in the early 70's and was instantly hooked. I ended up announcing there at Hangtown, too, for a couple of years before I left and headed off to college. I have crewed on winged sprints, late model stocks, bombers and modifieds. In the last few years, I have picked up a camera (with mixed results IMHO) and am having a go at taking pictures. I still am not ready to give up my day job as an insurance adjuster, serving the energy and marine industries. I try to get to Indiana at least once a year, and have been lucky enough to make it twice last year, and again planning two trips for this year.

Oh, and I started that annoying "Picture of the Day" thing. I will start rotating some new pictures in May, when I finally get back up there. I do cover the local Houston area racing scene, so visit my site and see what we race down here.

Oh, and I won't talk about age. . . . .

My name is Jaryd Chambers I am a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps.... I am staitioned in Jacksonville North Carolina at Marine Corps Air Staition New River where I am an Aviation Information Systems Specialist... I turn 20 in about a month, so I'm just a young buck, but my love for racing of just about any type started a long time ago... I grew up around it drove some quarter midgets and go karts before moving to the fender side driving stock cars before leaving for the Corps... I consider myself a student of the sport, and am currently working on a degree in Journalism... One day I'd like to be involved with racing in some capacity to make a living.... I am engaged and deploying in MAY

My name is Neil Cavanah and I am an 18 year old senior in high school. I live in the middle of tin top land also called Frankfort Kentucky. I have family that lives in Henderson Ky which is about 30 min south of Haubstadt. My dad has been taking photos at Haubstadt for a long time, and now he has company as I will be in my second year of taking pictures at the ¼ mile speed plant. JJ Yeley is my favorite racers because of his driving style and he is just a cool guy to hang around with. My younger brother has become a big Daron Clayton fan so that’s how my username came to be. I am a huge University of Kentucky sports fan (not doing so well this year) but will be attending Western Kentucky University this fall to work on getting a business degree. So it looks like I will need to root for two collages now.

I am Gregg Sebald of Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm married and 57 years old and work for a material handling company in sales. I attended my first race (AAA midget) in 1955 at the now defunct Cincinnati Race Bowl. I've been hooked ever since. I mostly go to USAC events and a few local shows at the 'burg. I go to a couple of IndyCar events each season. I will be going to my 50th consecutive Indy 500 this year. My favorite race is the Little 500.

I am just a fan so somtimes I get very little respect around here.

I like racing, racing and racing. Stick and ball sucks.

I'm Drew Mortland, 20 Years old. I'm from East Alton, IL (about 30 minutes east of St. Louis). I'm a paid-on-call firefighter and attending Lewis & Clark Comm. College majoring in Fire Science and hope to become a career firefighter somewhere.

A little explanation for my username...
My uncle owned a midget and mostly ran MARA. His had three cars in his time as a car owner. The first was a Harry Turner, second a Jack Rich, third an Edmunds (see my avatar for the first car). He had a few different drivers including former ARCA stock car driver Perry Tripp and Springfield, IL graphic designer/painter Doug Canham.

The Mortland Racing claim to fame is the third place finish in the USAC midget race 8/31/91 at Granite City... The top 5 was: Jack Hewitt, Steve Knepper, Perry Tripp, Donnie Lehmann, Mike Streicher. :respect:

My mom and dad took me to my first race September 4, 1989 - I was 9 months old - for the USAC Silver Crown race at the DuQuoin, Illinois Fairgrounds for the Ted Horn 100. Afterwards, I met Andy Hillenburg and sat in his #85 Champ Car.:thumb I've only missed one champ car race at DuQuoin since I've been alive and it was thanks to a rain-out and re-schedule (the first night race)...I'll never miss another one.

To this day, I still go to races with my dad (and his girlfriend tags along ) We mostly attend USAC Sprint Car and POWRi Midget shows. My favorite races are the Dirt Miles for Silver Crown and Sprint week is hard to beat. We've met so many great people and have made a ton of friends and it seems like we meet more every year. Hopefully I'll be able to bring my kids to the races because it's just a great place to be. :D

I'm Dave Gansert, I have been involved in racing since 1966 one way or another. I have been the track photographer at O'Rielly Raceway Park in Indy for the past 6 years. I have also been shooting for Reuters at Indy for the past three years. I have been a wrench on many sprint cars, with such drivers as Bubby Jones, Danny Smith, George Snider, Ron Shuman, and Gary Irvin. I've also worked in the retail field of hose-fittings, nuts bolts, and daily consumables that racers need. My 2009 plans, I'm going to be the track photographer at Vermilion County Speedway in Danville Ill. I am also a school bus driver for the Brownsburg Community School Corp.

Ok Devin. My name is Mike Haley.Im 35 and married.(4 stepkids and 1 granddaughter)My father took me to my first race when I was in a stoller. He wrenched for my Uncle Phil who ran sprint cars after I was born.Ive been going ever since. My father has wrenched for different people. In 88 (I think) he was helping out Tray House. He set the 4 lap qualifying record that year for the little 500.Has been broke since then but.I got to help around the shop some.In 1990 I started helping my dad wrench for Billy Throckmorton.(also sprint cars)Did that for a few years and then we started helping John Althouse.(more sprint cars)In 2001 I started racing go karts.Did that for 4 years finishing 2nd 3rd and 2nd in points at Muncie and than 2nd in points at Lapel. After I flipped my kart at Lapel at the end of 04 my dad decided I needed a roll cage.I started racing micros in 05 and still do but this year will be a 5 or 6 race season as I get a little more winded than Devin after 25 laps.I hope to get a chance to meet some people on this board sometime throughout the year.I am from Anderson,In home of the little 500.

Re: Getting To Know IOW Members

My name is Ted Hartman. I am 44 years old, have been married to the same blonde lady AND have been self employed in the trucking business since 1985. Yes, she is very tolerant.

I watched my first sprint car race in Missoula, MT in 1978, and would not see them again until I watched Leland McSpadden crash at least two times in one night and still win the main event when the SCRA visited Skagit Speedway in 1994. Have been a fan ever since.

I got involved in racing quarter midgets with my kids in 1998, hoping to avoid the motorcycle my son wanted when he was 6. One thing led to another, I became someone I said I would never be (big motorhome/ enclosed trailer), and somewhere along the line the little cars grew (as did my son & daughter) into something bigger. We did get rid of the motorhome though, and I threaten daily to trade the enclosed trailer for an open one.

My daughter "retired" from racing early, though she was the better driver IMO. My son elected to continue and now races wing and non-wing sprint cars. I do my best to make sure he is aware of the decision he is making to do this. I am a much better fan of racing, then I am of being a racing participant due in large part to the fact I interact much better with children than I do with adults.

I think all sprint car drivers are nuts, Scott Daloisio is my favorite announcer, and I think sprint cars rim riding and doing wheelies is second to nothing. I drink Mountain Dew because I'm not so young anymore. I think truck drivers in this country are underappreciated, underpaid, and since the time I could walk, there is nothing I would rather do for a living then drive a Kenworth.

Does that last line qualify me as a racer based on similarities of occupations/addictions?

:)

My name is Pat Grant and I'm an alcoho.... oops! Wrong group!!! j/k!!!

My name IS Pat Grant, I'm married and have 4 kids. I was born, raised and spent 30+ years in Tulsa, OK. I now live in Columbia, MO. I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade. I have been around racing all of my life and love just about every type of racing, my favorites are Sprints, Midgets and F1. When not following racing, I follow college football, GO SOONERS! I had an uncle die behind the wheel of a midget when he suffered a heart attach while driving in NM in the late 50's. He won so many races, he started giving the trophies back to the track so they would have more to give away. I don't remember my first race, our family spent pretty much every Saturday night at the track. I started working on "Supers" when I was 12 until I was 18. I then took a break from racing while I worked in the music biz as a tour manager/sound engineer, but the hiatus didn't last long. I have spent the last few years working on a winged 360 and last year was spent working for Danny Lasoski. This year, I decided to FINALLY launch openwheel.org and I also maintain a website for AMA Flattrack racer #49 Chad Cose.

I am Kyle Hendershot I have been going racing since I was six weeks old. I only love 2 things more than open wheel Midget, Sprint & Silver Crown racing my girls. I take my Girls to the track as much as possible so that we can keep the sport going forward.

I was introduced to the sport by dad who has worked on racecars since the '50s.

I am hopeful that my girls will continue to go racing? Who Knows??

This might not be the right place to put this, but he can write a pretty good story when he sets his mind to it. :D Hope you don't mind I posted it here, Jaryd.

A young man takes a deep breath and unzips his helmet bag. He grabs his red and white helmet and carefully sets it in the bag. He places his gloves, in the bag as well and zips it up. He's done this many times before, from quarter midgets, to stock cars.

The night will likely go as it does every other night but this one is different. His father tells him he loves him, tells him that he's proud of him. He gives his father a hug as he grabs his things to leave. The black simpson bag in hand he opens the door and looks back, he gives his dad a wink and walks out.

The summer sun beats down on him as he gets into his truck. He starts it up and pulls away from his house. Headed to somewhere thats a completely different world than his beloved race track. He feels a sense of calm as he goes down the road.

The open fields, and cold persona chill him as he looks at the names. The stones of marble and grey, they spand across the field. He pulls to a stop and looks to see that familiar name. A stone marked Heddins with a car and a 3h on it. Tears well up in his eyes, so he pulls his sunglasses from the bill of his cap. He slowly walks to the marble bench, and sits and lights a cigarette. He says the only words that come to his mind.

"Michael, it's been almost 2 years, and I still miss you. I see Bailey and it's amazing to see how much he's just like you. The races aren't the same, the parties aren't the same it's just so weird. Tomarrow is the day, and I've come to grips with my decision. I just hope your proud of me. I'll try and win one for ya. I know you'll be rootin for me."

As the young man walks away, he gestures to the sky with a three. He gets in his truck and leaves. He turns on the radio and puts in his favorite cd, he uses it to focus, on what lies ahead of him that night. He arrives at the track, and signs in like so many times before, the lady asks the spelling of his name, just like she does every week.

The car is unloaded and he climbs in for hot laps. He feels comfort in the car and gets faster with every lap. A smile from his friend as he climbs out and checks the tire pressures. "You looked damn good man." He smile and tells him thank you. He sits and he waits, talks to his friends, and eats. Finnally its time to race, and the butterflies gather inside.

He runs a good race puts it solidly in the show. He feels a sense of accomplishment, the first night in a different kind of car. He works on the set up a little, little tweeks will do. He sits and thinks about the next one, wonders what is in store.

The feature is run, and he finishes well, a win would have been nice, but a sixth will have to do. He sits and drinks a beer, with friends he'll leave behind. For tomarrow he starts a new chapter in life. The pride he feels is deep, and he can not break his smile. He tells his friends he loves them and he'll see them soon enough, he gets in his track and leaves the track. Tears fill his eyes and as gets on the highway towards home. He knows he'll miss the people and memories, but he thinks it's all for the best.

He gets up the next morning, still buzzing from the night before. Happy that he could do it, he tells his dad of the night. He drives to meet his shuttle, and heads to St. Louis for departure. Today he'll leave his loves behind in search of his new path.

He's leaving for boot camp, he knows he'll make it through. He becomes a marine in a short while, and he'll return to his home a new man, but doesn't know what else life may hold. He gives his dad a tearful hug, tells him he loves him. His father leaves and the boy goes forward on to San Diego. He will return to his friends and family, and the race track he loves so dear.

My name is Chris Pedersen, I am 46 years of age,(you can decide if it is old or young ). I have been involved in auto racing my entire life.I was at my first race at 2 months old, at Norwood Arena, in Massachusetts. My family moved to Indiana in the late 60's, because my father wanted to work on race cars.

If it has 4 wheels ,I have worked on it ,from the Speedway to quarter midgets.I enjoy twisting wrenches and busting knuckles. To alot of people here I am known as a photographer.

To me racing isn't a sport but a way of life, and I will go anywhere to shoot it or work on it from Irwindale to Epping New Hampshire , and all points in between, as long as gas stays under $4 a gallon.

And to all the military members here, thank you and God Bless.

I yam who I yam. I know several people here, even Chris Pedersen. I've been going to races since the Truman Administration, or since my good friend Marv Fish was in junior high school.

There are quite a few good folks here that I've actually met. Quite a few more that I'd like to meet, including that Seapooch guy from Cincy.

At the track, I often hang around that Hoover guy and his buddy Shaw, to their everlasting regret and shame.

For different reasons (mostly my mother's illness) I've had to step away from writing for much of the midwestern off-season. But I write for both the website and newspaper that appear below here.

Racing influences include my dad, Dave Argabright, and Mr. Happy, though not always in that order.

The Darland sisters are both a lot of fun. And I admire their brother as much as I do anyone in racing.

Seek out Butch Wilkerson. He's usually good for a story or 12. Some of them are even true.

Hi, My name is David McCardell. I live in Ellicott City Maryland, just a bit outside Baltimore. I'm a PC/LAN tech. I grew up in Hagerstown and started going to to the races there when I was 3 in 1966. I've been coming out to Indiana for the races for about 5 years now. Keep telling the wife I'm gonna move out there.

Been around racing most of my life. Dad drag raced a Javalin and crewed on some cars that ran at Hagerstown. I've raced a little in Delaware running Mod-lites, have done Skip barber and a little Karting. Have crewed on a NASCAR Late Model at Old Dominion, but gave that up after two seasons. Now I just play with the Nikon at the track from time to time. Can't wait to get back out to Indy for Midget Week. Danny I'll see you in June!

hello, my name is Kevin Crowder. My family started this racing deal back in the 60's with my grandpa Bill Camfield owning a service station and running a amatuer car at Macon. He ended up owning a few sprint cars with Bobby Carrigan driving the first one. He then bought the B4 that Larry Cannon drove for a guy named Blackard? He hired a young barber out of Danville and painted the car white with blue stripes and #87. Ole' Bub went on to win the track championship at Shaheens and won many features here in the midwest. Uncle Jerry and Uncle Dave also had sprinters with both winning track championships. My first visit to the track i was 6 months old. mom said she couldnt find a babysitter because everyone was at the races. lol. Nowadays i have 2 cousins racing midgets Rich and Davey Camfield. I also raced a midget a couple years including the prairie and the chili bowl. This is a great site with a lot of great people young and old. me? im 42. still racing fender cars here in central il. and having a blast.

We have met the greatest friends at race tracks.

Monica started going to road races (age 6); got into circle tracks with her first husband (age 20) and can't give it up. Racing Addict.

Re: Getting To Know IOW Members

Friends, I spend a lot of time following the strings on IOW. Its one way I stay connected to racing when I'm away. I want to convey my appreciation for the support expressed for our young soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coasties. I feel I can do this as I'm a previous owner of QMs, minisprints, midgets, and for the coming season, a 410 NW sprint, and I'm the old guy leaving the other end of the military career pipeline having retired from the Army last fall. People in the racing community typically share some common values that are often expressed as support for our servicemembers. So for a moment allow me to make a huge assumption that I can speak for this group and tell you that your expressions of appreciation are heard and taken to heart as fuel to get through the occasional tough times. We make our carreer choices for a long list of personal, individual reasons, but it's nice to be appreciated. I tip my hat to the young lions and head home this summer to immerse myself in racing.

I'm Tommy Brolsma, former columnist at Hoseheads with KO (from 1998-2002). I've been involved in racing for a long time, even though I'm only 33...my family had a NASCAR Busch Series team from '85-91 or so, and then ran DIRT modifieds after that. I went to college in central PA, and went to Lincoln and the Grove almost every week. After college, I started writing for Hoseheads, first in Central PA, then here in Indiana. I got burned out with writing in '02 (I tried switching to Late Models when Hosehead started that site, but that didn't help at all). in '03 I started garra-fans.com for my other racing love, sports car racing (Grand-Am). I only get to a few races a year anymore, but it makes those races more special. I can't wait to get dirt in my face again this spring!

Most on here know a little about me but I'll throw in some older details.

Name is Jason Knoke and I'm a washed-up, has-been (or never-was to some people) and now retired sprintcar driver. Got started in racing at age 6 when my step-brother brought home a go-kart. He ran at the local fairgrounds on Saturday nights but also ran on Sunday's at a homemade track not far from our house. A bunch of friends would get together and play around each weekend. I wanted in on the action so my dad bought me a yard kart and I spent my first year running on Sundays. Moved to racing at the fairgrounds when I was 7 (got to watch Tony Stewart run every weekend. Yes he was just as good in a go-kart as he is now and ruffled feathers even then).

Spent 9 years in karts and when I turned 16 moved on to UMRA TQ Midgets. Ran TQ's from 93 to 97 and then made the big jump to sprintcars in 98. Drove cars owned by my dad, Dave and Dan Hurst, Larry Roudebush, The Law Brothers and even got to drive for Dick Briscoe one night at Bloomington. Semi-retired from sprints during the middle of 2003 to recover from a crash and sat out all of 2004. Returned to race again in 05 and 06 then decided it was time to get out.

Some of my memorable achievements in racing.
4 - kart track championships
1995 - UMRA Most Improved Driver
1996 - UMRA TQ Champion
1998 - Putnumville Sprintcar Rookie of the Year
2001 & 2002 - Twin Cities Sprintcar Champion

I've been privileged to run against the best sprintcar drivers in the nation and had my fair share of luck in winning some local races although my goal of winning a USAC race was never achieved. Plan on running a few TQ races this year but with the birth of my son last year my racetrack time will be a lot less until he is old enough to go with me.

That pretty much sums it up. Thanks for starting this thread Devin. :Steer

I'm Chad Snead I have been going to the racetrack ever since I was born. My parents used to take me to Butler Motor Speedway when I younger. I grew up in Michigian and have only gone to a few tracks up that way most of the time we went to Butler. I lived in Florida for a couple of years back when Volousia was still asphalt and Ocala was dirt, before they paved it. Of course they both get changed back to dirt after I move. But now I'm in Indiana where I go the track at every possible chance I get. I work offshore in the Oil and Gas industry so my wor schedule makes it difficult to plan what races I will be going to and such. I recently got engaged to a wonderful women whom I have addicted to sprint car racing, she now wants to go just as much as me. We both love to watch sprint cars winged or non winged. But Our love for the sport isn't just limited to the sprints we like all types from the bombers up to the late models. We prefer dirt to asphalt, but you can almost always find me a the 3 Hour Figure 8 enduro at Speedrome if I'm home for it. That is one exciting race. However, if I'm not at the track on a saturday night when I'm home its because I am driving in a Demolition Derby at the local fairs.

That's all I can say for now.
