I predict the rental car places will get busy if this gets passed, which I very much doubt.

Welcome to over the road trucking. No way they can even come close to enforcing this on every car on the road . I run some over the road trucks and the paper work on miles traveled is a pain you have to put each state separate what road you used and how many miles traveled on each road.

The trouble with "new" taxes is that they never really replace any old taxes. They end up being an addition. Our fearless leaders really need to concentrate on spending less instead of raising taxes. But that is a topic for another forum.

Agreed! However, pork barrel ******** won't allow that to happen. They have to spend money or else they don't have anything to do. Then we might not need them and all the perks that go with it.:action-smiley-049:

It would be too hard to enforce something that big. In my county we have state roads, county roads, city roads, township roads, private roads. How do you keep track of what type of roads are being used and where the tax money would go? Would each entity get a certain percentage? Who would be responsible for keeping track of it? GPS units for every car in the US? Look at the cluster that the change to digital TV is causing. Not everyone is ready for the change, some people still don't have the converter box that's required, a lot of television stations aren't ready and the goverment ran out of money to help pay for the converter boxes. If the goverment can't even get that right, they have no chance of a mileage tax scheme working. :O:

Personally Im ready to grab the pitchfork. Toss em all on the heap and start over with a fair tax and ballanced budget amendment. The problem is there is no limit. Terms, taxes whatever. Its not like we can quit paying income tax and shut em down as the system for most working people takes the money before you get it.

National security and making sure laws are constitutional. Thats all the Fed Govt should be into.

For the Milage tax. It was proposed all cars have a GPS and it would keep track of miles driven. This tax would be added to licensing fees. Not to mention they'd probably have a control that would shut your car down till paid.

F THAT! sorry to sound harsh but Im really ready to setup some recall votes ect. The systems broke and instead of getting better or fixed it's getting worse.

Ok, but let's be fair here. Criminals will have to be taxed on the number of arrests and amount of time they waste in the courtroom to pay the costs and fees of judges, public defenders, courthouses, jails, etc.

nothing is too hard for our beloved politicians if they think they can squeeze a nickel out of those of us who get out of bed in the morning and make this country work. it's coming and they'll find a way to collect the money. another thing that's in the works sometime down the road is doing away with currency and making all transactions electronic. that way when you have a yard sale or sell, for example, used race car parts etc. to a friend or in the classifieds, the government will get it's sales tax, as well as taxing that "income". that's all these socialists do is sit up there and figure out ways to screw the working american out of his money so they can buy more votes from those who don't. once they get 51% of the population hooked on freebies and govt jobs, the party is over. it may be now.

When I was in N.Y. over the Christmas Holiday's, the N.Y. State politicans wanted to add a tax to regular soda. It was to be called the Obese Tax, to the best of my knowledge the state residents started fighting this tax and it has not been implement at this. Tax soda because drinking too much of it leads to obese people, give me a break.

Next they will want to tax us for the number of times we brush our teeth in a day.

Enough of my off topic rant, gasoline is all ready taxed to much, a mileage tax scheme is ridiculous.

Re: How do traveling race fans feel about this

what you need to understand is that the government won't have to collect this tax directly. it will be the same as the sales tax. they made a tax collector out of me by requiring that i charge and collect sales tax, for my services, from my customers. I then, in turn, am required to send the money into the state treasurer by a certain date twice a year. the government does nothing other than open the envelope i send them and deposit the money. as of this july, i am required to do this electronically, so now, they don't even have to open the envelope anymore. if they decide to do the mileage tax, it will be verified and collected through the BMV just like they do when you sell a used car to someone. they collect the sales tax when the title is signed over to the buyer. this new task will, however, probably require that the BMV hire additional people to do the verification of mileage etc. so, now we have even more people on the government payroll that won't vote away their new "jobs".

I hope people on this board are paying attention to how fast our rights are being taken away! There are some bills being talked about in Illinois to say any gun owner has to have a million dollar liability coverage on the gunor he needs to turn his guns in. I know this board isnt meant to talk about ********,but if some people dont wake up and start researching what is going on there might not be a springtime to enjoy out hobbies.
I got my pitchfork ready. WERE ARE WE MEETING??????????????

If people had researched the political landscape before the ********, we wouldn't have a socialist controlled government right now. Wait until you learn what's hidden in this new bailout bill. you'll be astonished.

Patti, Ohio already has a "soda" tax. I don't think it had much effect on the obesity rate in Ohio. I'm all for taxes....... I think that everyone should be taxed, and no one should get directly reimbursed. Seems like the only ones paying taxes are the people who can't pay accountants and politicians or actually work.

The "soda" tax will be wrapped up in a bottle/can deposit charge like they have in Michigan

However you can only return the bottle/can to the place you bought it because the machines are set up if they do not carry that item they can not refund the container (even know all the containers just go to one central location) also if you crush your cans to save space or the label comes off your bottle it will not be able to read the bar code and no refund is issued and the gov't keeps the tax

I urge people to look into third parties because the top two are getting closer and closer is reality (no matter what they say to hide it) Through out time there has always been more then one choice it was not until we were flooded with mass media that it was determined that only two parties need reconized and of those parties only certian canadates need covered.

One of the reasons for this type of tax is due to hybrids and other fuel efficient vechicles. These vechicles use less taxed gas. Less taxed gas=less road monies. However, you would still have roads being used by the hybrid vechiles. THe question becomes how do you fund the roads that we need without the gas tax.

Here is a good article from Oregonhttp://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...agetax05m.html

Just remember, we are presently paying for cars we can't buy, because the banks we bailed out won't loan us money.. Now we are rewarding those who don't pay their bills, by having us who work are butts off do it.

This definately wouldn't be a country Jefferson, Franklin , or Washington would recognize. It is a shame self reliance is looked down upon.

The tax situation is the worst. I have to live within my means, as the government lives beyond its means.

They showed on the news tonight an interview with Sec. Clinton about why her and the president are not following through on the hardball stance they promiced in their campain about dealing with China's monitary system. Her responce was

"That was back then and this is now, things have changed since the campain that make us relook at the situation and we need China to be our ally so they loan us the money for the stimulas packages."

That was then? The ******** was 4 months ago!!!!!! Plus does the average American really want to be in debt to China, the Middle East Oil Countries or any foreign country for that matter. How do the does it feel to be a Union Auto man and know the money that is bailing you out is comming from China and once it is paid back with interest they will make more money out of the bail-outs then American workers

Re: How do traveling race fans feel about this

The state of NC is very close to putting this into action. It's about to go before the state legislature. The tax would be a quarter of a cent per mile (that's 0.0025/mile for those who like to see the number).

This would be assessed based on the mileage at your annual inspection. Given the fact our governor was on the news tonight saying she has to make up a multi-billion dollar deficit and anything was on the table, I'd say this stands a real good chance of passing.

Now, I drive approx 50-60,000 miles a year. That works out to $125-150 a year.

I have one big problem with this. It's called a road use tax. Probably 75% of my miles are in other states, not on NC roads. And everyone who drives in from another state is not paying this "road use" tax.

Tolls? I've got no problem with them. I probably pay West Virginia at least $75-100 a year driving thru there. But at least everybody is paying it (and they do re-pave the road every few years and keep it up).

Just another thing to bite the traveling race fan who's already doing his best to stimulate the economy.
