is that the same Jack French that owned a red #66 driven by Alan Barr at Lawrenceburg back around 1980-82????? I haven't heard that name for years and was wondering if he was still with us.

Uhm at the risk of being stoned and Im not a big fan of his on the track. Theres none better at setting up a car, expecially for himself than.

Re: Best Crew Chief?

Sammy is/was one of the all time greatest. Doug Wolfgang mentions it in his book many times that Sammy would out work everyone in the pits in his early days. He carried spare parts before anyone else.

Jack French is still around, and yes- he is the one who had Alan Barr driving for him. He likes to keep a low profile. He is our team manager again this year I am pleased to report.

I don't like "blowing my own horn" but feel I should mention him since he puts so much into racing and seldom gets much credit compared to the driver:
Best young crew chief- Clinton Wilson, Sprint car and Silver Crown car.
most people probably think Jack or myself make all the calls and do the "important" work on the cars, but the opposite is true.
Florida 400- Clint stripped a borrowed car down to the bare frame and rebuilt it prior to going to florida. Jack nor myself touched a wrench to the car and it finished 3rd. At the ripe old age of 16; Clinton and crew won a USAC national race at Salem. We had some parts fail during the year, but nothing was ever left loose or fell apart.

Midgets- Kevin Besecker, Bob East, Benics.
Pave Sprint- Glen Neibel, Jack French; Dirt Sprint- Galen and the Fox boys.

I certainly wouldn't disagree with any of the previous nominations. I would just add that I thought Curt Biro did a helluva a job keeping Kenny on the track and very competitive. :thumb

Re: Best Crew Chief?

A very impressive and well respected list so far BUT the very best calls the east coast home.Davey Brown Sr the best PERIOD.Hell he's been around since the late 50's and probably has well over 1,000 wins as a crew chief including the bugs (30 x90)cars of the sixtes, modifieds, and sprint cars(winged and non-winged).He might not be well known among mid west fans but any good driver down through the years knows of his accomplished career.:respect::respect::respect:

Clint is definitely ahead of his years. So is Jacob.

It's easy to forget about Bob East, the mechanic. I always view him as an owner, although, technically, he isn't.:wink Whatever car he's wrenching is ALWAYS tough to beat, regardless of who's driving. The "Nine Cars" were never the same after he and Lewis parted, but that could be attributed to R&D for TRD. Still.....

Karl Kinser. End of discussion.

I would like to add Donnie Ray Everrett and Jim McQueen to the list. They did so much for so many. To name a few, Bubby Jones, Jan Opperman, Ron Shuman, Danny Smith, Robbie Stanley, Gary Irvan, Billy Engalhart, Jackie Howerton, Bruce Walkup, and Rich Vogler.

I met John back in 77 at Manzy, Kudos to that.
If I were to pick a current chief it would have to be Tom Miller. He he does it old school.
