For the Sammy haters...

For what it's worth, a "non-conventional" midget has never won the Chili Bowl...

Re: For the Sammy haters...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Bondio's car are conventional. I don't think they are legal to run anywhere but the Chili Bowl. I myself am all for someone trying new things. If it works it works, come up with a better idea and beat them. By the way I say pics of Sammies car and it ugly but I always say we don't race paint and we don't race trailers. If it ugly and fast who cares.

The only Bondio cars to win were with the "normal" wheels and body panels...

BTW, I heard today that Sammy's car weighs in the 600 lb range...

Re: For the Sammy haters...

600lb that's crazy no wonder it's fast. Hate to know how much they spent to make it that light.

600 pounds? Is there no weight limit at the chili bowl?I know sammy cant weigh more than 150 or so.

The only rules at the Chili Bowl are USAC body panels and you have to run the fuel sold at the track. Oh and I almost forgot.... You can't run a ski in place of the left front tire.

Re: For the Sammy haters...

Wonder if there weren't EPA concerns, if the fuel would be open fuel as well?

Are there any tire soaking rules?

Fisher79 1/17/09 10:25 PM

Re: For the Sammy haters...

I don't want to step on my dick here, but 600 pounds sounds a little far-fetched to me.

I'm just not sure there are enough things you can eliminate, or parts that weigh that much less than what everybody else is running, to drop that much weight. Seems to me that the days of reinventing the wheel, i.e. what Wolfgang and Trostle did with that car in the mid-70s, are for the most part over.

Larryoracing 1/17/09 11:44 PM

Re: For the Sammy haters...

600 lbs for a Bondio or Sammy Swindell seems about right. If you have looked
at one of these car up close you would be amazed at how much everything has
been lightened. And that is looking at the stuff you can see.

I'm sure if you thought about it just a little bit and thought about all the parts
on a midget that could be lighted, you might be able to see where wt could be saved. Lighter tubes, lighter gears, lighter tires and axels and drive shafts.

The car only has to make it through this one race. In fact, I wouldn't be surprized if Sammy's Fuel tank is 20-25 lbs lighter than a convention bladder shell system.
One he don't even have a shell on this car. Two if you made it of materials
that are extremely light. Like heck the fuel tank on a motocross motorcycle is only
made of plastic. How much fuel do you need? How big does it really need to be?
What's the lightest container you could make to hold, lets say 12 gallons?

Sincerely,

Larry Otani and God Bless you all.

it's a spike with an esslinger... like 90% of the competiton. It does not get much more conventional than that!!

The funny thing is that if it was joe blow, or the car was running in the rear.. you wouldn't be blabbin on it. But that it's sammy and he hasn't lost a race this week... he seems to be cheatin!

Keep guessin on the gallon size of the fuel cell!!

Great job Sammy!
On a funny note, Cole, my 12 year old son told me before the a-main that he didn't like Sammy at all!

Re: For the Sammy haters...

The Bondio cars are specially built for the Chili Bowl, no matter where else they might race them. Also, Sammy Swindell's car IS a specially built car and is NOT a conventional car. Just because the frame is a Spike, it sure doesn't mean it's a normal Spike from front to back.

Since you named this thread "For the Sammy haters...", I'll comment. Now, my mother always told me not to "hate" anyone, just dislike them very much. :D So, with that being said, here are my thoughts. Sammy has all of the talent in the world, that's obvious. However, his attitude and personality leave a lot to be desired. Kind of like flipping Stenhouse "The Bird" for a racing accident. That's just my opinion...

Any resemblance between midget racing and what goes on at the Silly Bowl is purely coincidental. Great circus show and entertainment and that's it.

Re: For the Sammy haters...

I want to know what your definition of "conventional" is... The Bondio cars are the least "conventional" midgets I've ever seen. The car Kruseman won with is no longer ran at the Chili Bowl in favor of the new non-downtube cars ran by Cory and Jerome Rodela... motorcycle wheel and tire or not, the car Cory won with was in no way "conventional"! ...By the way, this is the second year the Bondio cars have run square fuel cells with a phoney traditional cover-up.

It's purely coincidental!!! hahahahahahaha What's really bazaar is that the other 292 keep coming back there thinking they are going to win it. Most of them have an addiction to the event that they can't shake. Yeah... next time will be better... and it never is.

When I speak of "Conventional" I speak of the "normal" body panels and a traditional fuel tank.

When Kruseman won his CB's, it was before the motorcycle tire, the ski, the square fuel tank, the power steering reservoir being integral in the chassis and the "spaceship". Other than it being a Bondio fabricated chassis, everything else was pretty much straight forward, off the shelf parts.

Don, I wonder what your deal is with the CB. I saw your name plastered on Critter's car there for a number of years..... Did you just get tired of losing???

I love a circus! For you that must have been hiding in a cave, my team just completed the five race indoor Rumbles series. With the superb Geoff Kaiser at the wheel, we were one of a few that made all five feature events AND we finished second in the owners points out of forty some cars that competed. So... yeah... I'm tired of losing!!! hahahaha

Not calling you a liar Don, but I refuse to believe this until I see it with my own eyes.

A 600 pound midget? That's like an 850 or 900 pound sprint car....

mortboyz 1/18/09 11:47 PM

Re: For the Sammy haters...

The car didn't look that much different from a "standard' dirt Midget to me, except for the square tank and the "hobby stock" nerf bars...:D
But I do find it hard to believe that John Godfrey would allow his stickers on a car that had frame parts made of "exhaust pipe" tubing, as one rumor we heard walking the pits.....

And Don, on the way home I thought it over some more.....I'll throw it up to $300 to see that 10 car at the Sammy Bowl next year:eek:

Attitude and personality do not win races despite what you and alot of people around here think of him and Kevin. Driving is what wins races and both of them can and have done it in the past. Most people choose to dislike them because of what they do or say OUTSIDE of the racecar but IN you can't say squat.

As far as flipping Stenhouse off, every driver has done it a time or two just ask Jack Hewitt. And another thing why don't you ask Scott Speed what he thinks about Stenhouse? Hey everybody's got an opinion........

Go Sammy & Go Kevin!:checkered:

Re: For the Sammy haters...

I'll give credit where it's due. Sammy ran an awesome race. I'd heard the same thing about the roll cage or part of the frame being made from exhaust tubing. If it was the same car from 03, then I believe it was originally a Stealth but since Godfrey made it I guess it's ok to call it a Spike. It didn't have the hood on it from that year though.

I think it's time Bondio brough back the old car or make another one like it for Kruseman. Those guys are falling from grace. Come back and kick some ass again guys!

From a very reliable source, the car is just a tick over 600lbs. The key you ask? Alot of magnesium in places you would never suspect.

Who cares, a w is a w and Sammy has 5 of them now in the Chili Bowl....

If any of the other cars would of won, would we be even talking 1 bit about their car?

Sammy was the class of the Chili Bowl this year, deal with it!
Come to think of it, how close is anyone else in his Chili Bowl win column? E nuff said...

Re: For the Sammy haters...

Bondios car that Kruseman won in might have had off the self parts, but you better believe that they were milled and modified as much as possible. His cars now are completely nuts. Bondio fabrication shuts down sometime in the middle of November, untill the Chili Bowl just to get the cars ready. 600lbs is a tank compaired to the new rides.

Its hard to cheat when there are no rules. I think he just had a great setup, and face it Sammy can drive.

i have to agree, it's hard to cheat when there are no rules.

as for the fuel cell, why have a 27 gallon fuel cell when you only put 10 gallons in the tank.

Here's what I find funny about this whole thread. Many on this board long for the days when the Indy 500 was all about innovation, when cars would show up that were different and challenged the field. But at the Chili Bowl, the same ones complain about that very thing.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the Chili Bowl is probably the closest thing to the old days, when innovation was key.

Seems to be a very popular event for the USACers - they have been making the tow for years. Hard for me to believe the "wool has been pulled over their eyes".

Run Watcha Brung! If you want to run an outdated USAC midget/sled that weighs more than a pushtruck, they will not turn you away at the door.

Maybe in somewhat of a different direction, but does anyone here happen to know what kind of a relationship Steve Kinser and Sammy have today? Do they acknowledge each other at the track (last year's Gold Cup), do they ignore one another or do they talk and get along? Just curious and BTW congratulations to Sammy a real legend. :checkered:

Larryoracing 1/19/09 10:14 PM

Re: For the Sammy haters...

Well, I just want to say congradulations to Sammy. I think he is what keeps the
alure of sprint car racing booming.

1) First thing I thought about when watching the after qualifier winners interview
was how old Sammy looked. He is not a spring chicken anymore. He is old!

a) But the next thing I noticed when watching the Qualifier on Youtube
was how good and exacting a driver he was. He drove outstandlingly!
As good as any driver I have seen. I Probably haven't seen many...lol!

2) Next, is the innovative and imaginative and creative genius at work. I don't
have much respect for drivers. They are a dime a dozen, but when you can
bring a new car to the track and beat the best at building a racecar for
a particular race....to me that is what it is all about. It can be Indy, Nascar
or a sprint car race. The car is what turns me on! He brought a different one
and I love that because that's how I view racing through the car you bring
and how you fix them up in the shop. I wouldn't even have to go to a race, but
building one that is a little different or better than the next guy is a dream
come true.

a) Can't wait to watch this on ESPN.

Sincerely,

Larry Otani...

P.S. They want to cut my mom's legs off. She's old. I hope they don't.
And God bless you all!:applaud:

Their relationship is a cordial one. Your not going to be buddy-buddy after trying to beat each other for 30 years. They have played golf together recently and respect each other more than they'll ever admit. Wolfie was at the Chili Bowl and I'm sure he was rootin' for Sammy.
