Winter 1949-1950. Not sure if it was Dec. or Jan. I was 3. AAA midgets indoors Chicago Int'l Amphitheatre. The only driver I remember for sure was Eddie Russo, a Marine Corp buddy of my dad from WW2. When Dad announced we were going to see some midget races, Mom thought we were going to a track meet for little people!

1966 - Shangri-la Speedway, Owego NY. Pavement track. Modified stock cars.

Six months old. Much too young to remember anything.

Drivers who raced at this track back then that might be familiar to some: Dutch Hoag and Lee Osborne. Possibly Jim Shampine.

Fall of 1964, 200 lap supermodified race. I was not yet 10 years old.

Tri-State Speedway, Haubstadt, IN.

I have no idea who won, but I do remember hearing the names Kinser, Gaines and Gilstrap, guys that would soon become my heroes

I don’t know specifically but here’s what I can attest to. It had to be 69 or 70, but could be earlier. I’m sure of this because I remember my Dad making it clear we got to watch the legend Bob Tatersall. His last year was 70. This was at Santa Fe. I would’ve been 7 or 8 at the time. Probably my favorite then was Mel Kenyon

Holland Speedway in NY. 1967 which was the last year it was dirt. I was 12 and my favorites were Pete Tingue and Speedy Greco. The hook was set.

Winchester Speedway for the USAC sprints the summer of '63. I was only 3 and Dad said nobody could believe I slept through the feature with the Offys under the covered grandstand. Hasn't happened since.

I am enjoying reading everyone’s recollections.

The first race that I can remember attending was the 1970 USAC champ car race at the old California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento. Al Unser won in the Johnny Lightning car. A few months later, I got a Johnny Lightning set for Christmas.

Terry,

I’ve been told this story since I was a kid at 12yrs old, and just repeated it as it was what I was told. Do you know anything about it?

The year before your Devils Bowl comment above, 1977 —--- Ted Johnson ran 6 test or precursor races at various tracks to see if the WoO traveling sprint car series would work. I was always told by my elders that I watched one of those races at the old Joplin speedway on Rangeline road. I don’t really remember many names but I do remember seeing and hearing about Ferkel, McSpadden and a Kinser. If I remember correctly, Joplin speedway did not race sprint cars on a regular basis.

Do you or anyone on here know anything about that?
