Terre Haute Sound System Go Fund Me.

The Fair Board is trying crowd funding to try to install a new Pa system that fans can hear

You can if you want. You don't have too is you don't want.

Our Goal: $43,000
We’re asking our community of fans, racers, and supporters to help us raise $43,000 to purchase and install a brand-new system that includes:

Guess I’ll be the first to say I’m not a fan of this. They should be getting funds from the county, or be soliciting donations from businesses. 43 Grand is an awful lot. Not sure they need “ State of the art gear “. How much do they raise from parking during the Fair? Place has been on the verge a few times of closing, so there’s no guarantee that if you donate it will be there for a long time. Don’t think this should be put on the fans that already pay to attend.

I am a fan, Better experience means more will come.
Ten years ago Burg promotor told me each speaker was 400 bucks.

That sprint week count of 32 wouldn't have been 25 without them guardrails. Way too many went out of the park or got hurt due to them block walls.

Aurora78 8/6/25 3:58 PM

Guardrails are different than speakers.

Yes and no. For the racer it's better. They won't give a darn whats said on the Pa when on the track

For the fan, When you can't hear lineups or much of anything with just one car at Idle speed or a water truck on the track. IT SUCKS. Not to mention downtime interviews with old time racers and stuff and of course. Victory
lane speeches. You can usually hear it on Flo. Can't hear em at the track.

There's a option listed in the description of the page to send directly to the track to avoid card and go fund mes take. I WAs hoping some businesses or Rich people around would contact em. Maybe for a billboard 10k It's gonna take a lot of us 20-50 dollar people to make a dent

As I said in the post. You can or don't if you want. Thats fine
We all have a opinion just like backsides.

ThrowbackRacingTeam 8/7/25 12:02 AM

2-way speakers are like triple the cost. Good horn speakers like what Haubstadt has work great for a lot less money. In fact, the horn speakers at Terre Haute used to be more than loud enough. We always heard Mike King loud and clear!

I'll admit I've been a complainer about the TH sound system for the last few years. Sitting off turn 4 in the open bleachers I'm not even sure those speakers worked. I'll agree with Charles - every track needs a good sound system. Why have a HoF announcer like Pat Sullivan if you can't hear him. Fans need to hear line-ups, interviews and updates. Even Little League fields have good speakers.

As far as costs go, I was told the new Anderson Speedway sound system cost over $40,000. If anyone went to the Little 500, they had Dirt Vision broadcast playing over their speakers. It was amazing sound. I'm not sure the TH Go Fund Me system is the way to go. Just another way to pressure the local fans to pay for a county fairgrounds. Doesn't seem fair. But time will tell.

PS. If this system works, maybe Brownstown Speedway can have a Go Fund Me page for new lights for their track. It's gotta be the darkest track in Indiana. Went there last Saturday and it seems like they're racing in the dark.

I can hear Pat on the PA. Can't hear Brian though. Never had any trouble hearing Bill Donnella. Not even sure he needed a PA system.

I will end up donating. I will ask about a short range FM transmitter. That would allow us to listen to the race through head phones or bluetooth earbuds.

Go Fund Me question..................If they fall hugely short of their Goal, do they refund donations, or does that just end up a donation to Fair Grounds for whatever they feel inclined to use it for?

Great point. One of the best things about going to Eldora is listening to their FM frequency and announcers calling the races.

This is the answer. Not sure why tracks don’t go this route (no idea what this type of system costs). Everyone has a phone and most have earbuds anymore or at least something they can plug into their phone. Keep the current systems and upgrade with a local radio signal or internet broadcast.

It's for more than just the fan in the stands. Pits. Possibly fans instructions on crossing the track if the tunnel's un passable. People milling around outside the track at break.

As for Go fund me. As far as I understand. If a fundraiser is cancelled, Accounts of the donors are credited.

Is there any other sport that uses broadcast announcers for events? How would it affect the fan experience if NFL games used the CBS or Fox feed at stadiums. I enjoy the events on Floracing and have no real criticism of the announcers. But they are broadcast announcers, not event announcers. I don't remember having trouble hearing the announcers back in the 70's and I doubt the systems were better back then than they are now.

Re: Terre Haute Sound System Go Fund Me.

I think it is ridiculous to ask fans to pay for upgrades other than thru ticket sales. Vigo County and the Fair Board should figure it out and then use the facility more for other events to help get their money back. Seems that nobody wants to spend their own money anymore. They want to use somebody else's. I was brought up to cover your own deal and then not have to answer to anybody. I'm sure three races a year won't give them much to help but is the Board really using the facility as much as it could?

Well, a lot of those sound systems are the same ones used in the '70s, and your hearing was a lot better 50 years ago.

Probably don’t need a $40,000 upgrade so the teams in the pits can hear. Announcements about crossing the track would obviously be made when there aren’t cars on the track, fans can hear that. Anyway, my comment was more a general comment for all tracks. Enhancing the fan experience is highly important in today’s world, there is so much competition for entertainment dollars and technology is all around us.

I've never been to TH so I can't comment on the PA system quality. I will say at least they're trying. I would rather they do fundraising like this than raising ticket prices. If they charged $5 more dollars and get in 2000 people (no idea if this is accurate) that would be $10000 a night. So they could get the money in tickets but that would cause an absolute **** storm. People would loose their minds if the tickets where increased. Once again a track is in a no win situation.

Get me some Saturday night USAC races there, and I’ll donate

Re: Terre Haute Sound System Go Fund Me.

Looking at the Th Go Fund Me page tonight, Monday night, $655 has been donated by 10 donations. I think we can see how this experiment is working.

Charge $5 to park and put that money in the PA. I have sat in the bleachers and not been able to hear any PA all night.

How about checking into getting used equipment from a track that is unfortunately closing.

Good Idea, Would probably work fine speakers, mics amp wise> Still going to take a few thousand to replace cable/wire for half a mile of speaker line. Which is what I think the main problem now is. So deteriorated they can't get enough amps to the speakers to have any volume, Further from source it is. The worse the volume.

Very good Idea maybe enough to get it reasonably done 8-15 grand.

Might be worth contacting the Beaver Dam Raceway (if it is really going to close at the end of this year)? I suspect everything would go to auction, but you never know...
