Enlighten Me

So I was sad to hear that Terre Haute had to cancel today. I applaud Joe and Kevin for giving this deal a go, but it looks like it’s having a tough time finding it’s footing. But the they said they would add the Mods to the Big Car race, and I went to check the calendar to see what day that was. Amazingly it’s a Sunday evening. Why not Saturday? We complain about attendance at The Action Track, but they never run Saturday. Seems an obvious adjustment for me, but I must be wrong. Please, enlighten me

Feel enlightened yet?

Sunday's fine. expecially later in the year. The sun sets about seven so they can get it done before nine or so. I did a spring fling they had one year in spring and I was home by midnight 187miles three hours away.

sprits fan 11 9/15/24 9:36 PM

The promoter runs Putnamville Saturday. Friday night could of been better not sure if fair board allows that. Sunday night not any good either. After the spring Maverick race would of thought they would of learned. It is just a tough sell with wings race and not knowing who will show up. Should of had an entry list days before the race. If not many drivers entered by X date then cancel it so people don't waste there time for nothing.

Silver Crown is a national series. They should expect that at least a portion of the attendees are traveling in.

Sunday evening is a hard no for me. I'm six hours from Terre Haute. It's not an event worth carrying over into my Monday as well.

I don't envy promoters trying to make a dirt track work these days. I get it w/ TH and the challenge of when to schedule when you've got really strong tracks near you that run Fr and Sa. As to the upcoming Silver Crown race, I would think a day race on Sa or Su in the Fall like this would be better attended.

It's kinda what made THAT Famous. Daytime racing.
Sad thing is, Now Calcium Chloride and other dust agents are frowned on.

As of now, the current promoter seems to have some free time on Friday nights.
I would love to see something like this next year:
April Silver Crown
May Sprints
June AMA bikes
July Sprint Week,Super Stock Modified fair race
August Late Model show
Sept Sprints
October Silver Crown show. Run all you can on Friday nights and I think it would be successful.

The spring race was an IRA series race out of Wisconsin. They’ve got a lot of full time teams chasing points so they get a decent field everywhere

I'll be amazed if the Oct TH Silver Crown race is done by nine. Especially now with modifieds being added. One can only hope.

The first spring (may)race was not. The June Maverick Mayham in June was co sanctioned.

I'll be surprised if it isn't cancelled ahead of time. The Sumar has had a history of not running about as much as it has run.

Bill Hopton and his group T.H.A.T. started the Sunday night racing at Terre Haute back in the mid in late 90s when they were the promotion team. He told me back then the reason they did that was because they didn’t want to step on the local tracks toes that ran Friday and Saturday night. Sunday night is hard because most have to work on Monday, you also have NFL football to compete against. Saturday night, October 5 is an $8000 to win non-wing Midwest sprint race at Haubstadt. Not sure if Spiker is part of that promotional group or not. You also have to consider that you’re dealing with the fairgrounds board and there may be something else going on Saturday, October 5th at the fairgrounds.

flagboy55 9/16/24 6:28 PM

Great insight Tim, and I believe you nailed it. LPS is running Friday, and I wasn’t aware of the Haubstadt race which is probably why LPS is running Friday. But to me, we continue to lament the the fact THAT seems to be barely hanging on and this is an obvious conundrum. I’m hoping if Joe continues to run the place we might get a Saturday or two next year as he probably has the most popular neighbor. I still say the first Saturday of Sprint week should be there

I definitely think you would get a better car count if Terre Haute was the first race of Sprint week. If I remember correctly it’s always the 1st or 2nd race of the second week.

But is the SUMAR race being promoted by Joe Spiker? The flyer posted on FB says the SUMAR race at Terre Haute is a USAC promoted event. So is Joe Spiker still the promoter at Terre Haute? There was virtually no promotion that I saw for the Maverick Sprints event that got cancelled.

cowboyhar69 9/20/24 2:48 PM

Sure sounds like USAC is the promoters for this race. They are doing the posting on Facebook and running the advanced ticket sales.

kendirt 9/21/24 2:27 AM

Should say that USAC promoting this race makes me more likely to make plans to take Monday off so I can attend.

That's the other thing, THAT has such a track record of races not happening that I don't know why they would think anyone would chance traveling in.

I find it hard to believe the Spiker group would have an advance ticket price of $20. Especially after their highest price Sprint Week gate price. Kudos to USAC for going all out on this event, especially Pat Sullivan. He's promoting this race like no other, especially the infield group special pricing.

flagboy55 9/21/24 9:41 AM

Hat’s off to USAC

SpfldMile 9/21/24 10:28 AM

I’m going and looking forward to it. I love fall weather races and I hope people support this race heavily.

They have managed to confuse me again. The Spiker THAT press release specifically mentions the Sumar. Now promoted by USAC?

Did Spiker NOT get exclusive right to promote all THAT racing?

USAC site still says $31 for Sumar GA.

https://www.usacracing.com/news/even...--oct-6-2024-2

Now it is $20?

DJlives 9/21/24 11:10 AM

$20 grandstand $10 infield with an advance ticket purchase. Add $5 if you purchase at the door

flagboy55 9/29/24 12:01 AM

Unsolicited testimonial. Went next door to visit my brother. Started talking about one of our best buddies who’s going to run his modified at Terre Haute next Sunday. We were talking about driving down to watch. He said, when are they going to run a race on Saturday? This is the essence of this thread. If you’re going to bury the Action Track, it’s part of your own doing. If it were Saturday, no question, we would go. But it’s not, and never is
