A Big Old Half Mile Reopening

Just saw where the big 1/2 mile is coming back in West Virgnia, Pennsboro Speedway.

Would be great to see the growing USAC Silver Crown series race there someday.

Would be cool to see the champ cars at West Virginia Motor Speedway as well. I have never been there but the place looks incredible.

Champ cars would probably work on WVMS and Pennsborro. But WVMS had huge fans support when it reopened but car counts quickly dwindled despite high purses.

Lucas Oil late models ran there last year and only pulled 20 cars. Lowest car count of the season. Had it not rained out the feature, they would have been lucky to have 10 cars finish.

I’ve not been to a race there but have been past it many times. You can see it from rt 50 & I stopped once to see it.
While it may indeed be a 1/2 mile don’t think about other tracks you’ve been too. To call it unique is an understatement. It’s an odd shape & I believe there may be a bridge or 2 in the track.
I wish them well & plan to go to the sprint races

It was featured on one of Dale Jr's. Lost Speedway series. Quite honestly, I know that it has a history, but I don't understand why someone would want to bring it back to life. It seemed like something destined for the history books.

I also remember reading on social media that when asked about his best/worst tracks that Johnny Gibson would always rank this as his worst track. When you watched the Lost Speedway series you could see why.

As you said, anyone spending money on a new track deserves our support, but this one is facing long odds.

Looks like they are putting some money into it and reducing it to a 1/4 mile.

Scratch that they are keeping the 1/2 just came out while I was posting the previous info.

XR Events, their money is apparently limitless. Not some dreamer trying to resurrect the place with podunk weekly racing.

Once they get it going they'll have a few big events a year and whatever else it takes to keep the track ran in and on people's radar.

Larry Moore told me when he raced there they didn’t have electricity. It was famous for being a dump with character. Not sure how you’d “fix” it up?

kendirt 1/20/24 5:24 PM

I bet when Larry Moore raced there there were houses in that county that didn't have electricity.

Based on the old Late Model pictures I've seen from the place, the first step in fixing it up would be to buy a water truck.

The track has never had lights. The cost to bring this place up to today's standards would be astronomical.

Many years ago I’d went racing out east and was driving thru WV. I was close in proximity so I just happened to pull into the closed Pennsboro speedway. I’d heard it called legendary, so I wanted to see it.
I’ve never seen a race there, so I can’t judge that. But the facility looked like a cow pasture with a creek running thru it. It’s gonna take a huge investment to get this up to modern standards.
