4 Crown
Any Thoughts Or Comments?
Best Regards, John |
I thought it was a great event. Dominant performances across three USAC divisions by Logan Seavey. AllStar win and championship for Zeb Wise. Both got the four wins running the top on treacherous razor thin cushion. Solid second for Matt Westfall in Silver Crown. Efficiently run program, only delays were for qualifying flips (Bacon and Moles), a 6 car crash in the sprint B main and the wicked Avedisian/Meseraul midget flips. Solid crowd, great weather, plenty of action and story lines in all divisions.

Re: 4 Crown
A few of my thoughts on the weekend…
Hats off to Logan Seavey. He becomes the third driver in Eldora history to win three USAC division mains in one night during the 4-Crown. He joins at elite list with Jack Hewitt and Kyle Larson. That was great to witness in person. The crowd: I went Friday and Saturday. The crowd both nights was larger than I can remember for a 4-Crown weekend. I’m sure the great weather helped. Is it a King’s Royal crowd? No. But the North Lot was chock full of campers and from where I was sitting, the spectator count looked pretty darn good Friday and even bigger on Saturday. Speaking of places to sit - Sitting in the turn three bleachers is the way to go. I felt I had a much better view there then anywhere I’ve ever sat at Eldora. And I've sat everywhere at that place. Plus, with the wind coming out of the east both nights, dust wasn’t an issue. At all. In all the years I’d been coming to Eldora, it was the first time I didn’t need goggles. I might get vilified here, but I thought both the WoO feature Friday and the ASCoC feature Saturday were the two best mains of the weekend. The ASCoC also had some intense drama with the driver and owner's point championships on the line. Watching both Rico and Zeb Wise run against that wall Saturday night was just spectacular. Until...it bit Rico with four laps to go. Of all the USAC main events, I thought Saturday night’s midget feature was the best one. For a brief moment, it looked like Bryant Wiederman just might make the bottom work and pull off a win. However, Logan said it best in victory lane “You don’t win Eldora by running the bottom.” That quote should be etched in stone at the pit gate. As for the midgets, I know Eldora has never drawn a great field. They’ve always struggled to get 20 cars for as long as I can remember. I wish something could be done to help draw more midgets as their racing can be just spectacular at Eldora. The big questions of the weekend were “Where was Buddy Kofoid?" and "Where was Cannon McIntosh?” A couple of other stories from the Silver Crown race: 1. PA’s Chase Dietz qualifying fifth and leading the first 9 laps of the Silver Crown feature, eventually coming home with a third place finish. 2. Tyler Courtney, starting dead last in the field as a last-minute sub for Brady Bacon and methodically working his way up to an 8th place finish. Even with the Silver Crown feature taking the checkered at 1AM, most of the crowd stayed to the very end. And I didn't hear anyone complaining as there was just non-stop racing and very little downtime. There must be a lot of people there at Eldora who are just like me. They know racing season is almost over. You just want to see every lap while you still can. |
Re: 4 Crown
Really enjoyed the racing
would like to know why Buddy Kofoid was not participating. The reports from Gas City on Thursday, Buddy said he was going to be running the 4 Crown and the BC39. |
Re: 4 Crown
Why did Courtney sub for Bacon?

Bacon hand a eye injury with something happened in the pits when it was working on the cars and they put T C in silver crown car for feature

I enjoyed both days of the 4 crown. Interesting to watch Tanner Holmes (WoO) in what I believe was his first time there.
I thought the crowds both nights were really solid weather was beautiful both days other than a stiff east wind. Tough to see Bacon have a tough Saturday. Hated to see so much equipment get tore up. Had a really cool 15 minute conversation with Zeb Wise early Saturday morning. He’s mature above his years and well spoken. Met up with a couple of new friends tailgating from Wisconsin Saturday good people and good times. I enjoyed my weekend. |
Re: 4 Crown
Racing was very good. I love Eldora. And yes, I know its out in the middle of nowhere, but I still find it ridiculous they can't end the Four Crown program before midnite. The do a good job of keeping the program moving, but absent reasons for a delay (accidents, weather, etc...) there should be no reason to be pushing a main off after midnite.

Moles trying to knock a fence post out of the ground and a fence repair. Brady making a rare mistake. Big midget wreck. I could go on. Weren't these enough reasons why the show was what you would call late or after midnight? They have tried to speed up the show and it helps with Silver Crown time trails and Last Chance Showdown on Friday night. Share your plan with us to speed up the show. |
Re: 4 Crown
I went both nights. (And Gas City on Thursday) Yes Saturday is a long night, but to me it is worth it, seeing that much quality racing. You only get that one time a year. I wouldn't want to go to that long of a show all the time. Best part was 3 nights at the races, and only top shelf open wheel classes. Even though Saturday was a long night, it was efficiently run with almost no down time. I thought the track prep was excellent.

Yes Seavey and Larson along with Jack won all 3 USAC parts so if you are leaving the other class off then it needs to be 3-Crown Nationals |
Re: 4 Crown
I went all three nights and loved it. I don't know how you would speed up the show unless you qualified earlier in the day and then reworked the track, I know what I sign up for when I go so it doesn't bother me.
One of my bosses from work got invited by a friend of his so this was his first race of any kind. As much as I love the event I thought to myself that this was a terrible event to try to break someone in with, four different cars with four different set-ups and four different formats for a newbie to try and keep track of? Forget about it. I told him today that I would get him to a track with less going on so I could explain some stuff to him at a later date. |
Re: 4 Crown
4 Crown Nationals is by far the BEST event in the country with ALL 4 styles of open wheel sprint type cars
|
Maybe my standards are a little higher than the other posters but I’m probably going to skip 4 Crown next year unless they make a few changes.
1. Haulers in infield block too much of the view of the track. 2. Track surface is a little better than a few years ago but still forms a huge plume of powder in the air. The new lights are brighter but it’s like driving in fog with your brights on. 3. Track prep was obviously done in favor of the winged sprints. They are using a weighted roller to pack the track hard, something Earl never did. This led to no cushion in 3&4 and directly caused several non-wing cars to get torn up. Friday wasn’t as bad. 4. Saturday night show is too long, could eliminate midget heats and should have started hot laps at 5pm. |

No complaints here, other than the one I posted on the other thread. I think it’s great on Friday to have the outlaws as a support class for the Midgets. The track was good, the racing was good, Jack was the Grand Marshal. I agree with everyone else, you know what to expect on Saturday, plan accordingly. I know it’s hard to stay awake for some of us graybeards, but it’s not everyday, heck only one time a year you get 4 headliner open wheel classes on the same card. We had an outstanding time. I wish I would’ve had more time to track down some of you guy’s and put some faces to names, but I had a lot of catching up to do with some special friends I’ve not seen in about 35 years. The 4 Crowns are always special to me. More than just the racing it’s a celebration of USAC racing and our families pilgrimage to Eldora since we first went in the 70’s. Long live the 4👑

Was at first one and many more. Simply put them program particularly is too long. There are ways to do this, no need for midget heats on Saturday. Runny non qualifiers and features for midgets, wings and non wing on Saturday. Heats and qualifying on Friday. Starting at 1800 hours and finishing at 0030 is unacceptable. Try to turn a sober new fan onto that.
|
I was there both nights. Stayed for entire show Friday. I went Saturday knowing full well what it was gonna be but when I went to the restroom at 10p and they were still running heat races I left. And I was not alone, as I was getting dressed for my motorcycle ride home there was a steady stream of people coming out.
|
This might be my last 4 crown for a while. We rolled out after the ASCOC feature. I wanted to see the silver crown feature but was exhausted. Between the overall cost (fuel, tickets, hotel, etc) and the late night I am not sure I see the value in going any longer. Maybe I am spoiled by flo. Who knows. We will see next year.

Racing starts at 7, not 8. Simple as that. No reason to start at 8. If it is delayed by accidents, weather, so be it. It isn't so much the late hour, it is the drunks like yourself tooling down all the 2 lanes afterwards at 2 in the morning. |
Be nice if they could figure out a way for the benefit of the Silver Crown guys that they didn’t have to be there 2 nights just to run 1 race and not be the last race.

I bet people seated around you at the track just love your incessant complaining. Whoops used a difficult word there here is it's meaning for you (going on and on: not stopping or letting up). By the way had they started at 7 they still wouldn't have gotten finished until after midnight. Nice try moving the goalposts to fit your narrative. |
Re: 4 Crown
I might be remembering wrong, but I believe at one point The 4 Crown was a two day event with all of the qualifying and heats on Saturday Night and the consi's and features were run on Sunday afternoon. I suppose you could move the qualifying and heats for the Sprints to Friday night, that wouldn't save time but it would transfer it to another night. Another thing they could do is save the post race celebrations till the end of the night, they probably lose 1/2 hour doing that stuff, but they are usually working the track during so they aren't really wasting time. I really do believe that the 4 Crown is just a great event that is going to run a little long. Not a race for newer fans but you know what you are getting into. If you are so bored that you feel the need to leave then it probably isn't for you anyway.
