Just read on Twitter that USAC sprints will replace Xtreme Outlaw sprints on schedule at Volusia in February.

Not Indy cars on mile dirt but Ill take it.

This is absolutely what I've been advocating for for years. Dump Bubba's and hit Volusia. Should also bring the Silver Crown cars to New Smyrna...
|
Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
I dont understand the dump Bubba part. Ive aways seen it as good racing and a great place to mingle with all my racing buds in February

Does Bubba Clem support USAC by promoting this annual event, or does USAC lease out the facility and promote?
I like the unique configuration of the track. I just wish the place was more kept up and not so dumpy. The prep work is almost non-existent as seldom do they work the track like we are accustomed to here in the Midwest. |
Full disclosure. It has been years since I have been to East Bay but at the time it was hardly a palace. You drove through a dump to get there and fans held up shields to prevent being sandblasted. Also full disclosure. I liked going because it was still sprint cars in February in an age where it wasn't a year round sport

Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
WOO HOO!!! 5 nights of USAC sprint cars in Florida in February!! Ought to be a GREAT time!
|
Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
Nothing against Bubba's, but I've always liked the racing at Volusia better. I like the actual racing at East Bay the best.
I hope USAC can buddy up with Volusia for years to come along with continued racing at Bubba's for East Bay is in their last year of racing, or real close to the last year - if memory serves me correctly. It will not be an option for sprints OR late models soon. Volusia gives all fans free pit passes. What a Winter gift for fans for the DIRTcar Nationals! The advantage Bubba's has, however, is that is it a stone's throw from Ocala. Everything one could want while on vacation is in Ocala - vice anything that close to East Bay. |
Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
I think you need both Bubba and Volusia to make the FL trip worthwhile. WRG likely won't be putting USAC on a prime weekend spot anytime soon, so the Volusia dates will probably only ever be mid-week shows. You need a solid weekend track and Bubba provides that.

Personally, I like BRP. It’s not a “cookie cutter” track in that its D shape is unique and has provided for some damn good racing in the 10+ yrs we’ve been going. Yes, there could certainly be some more care taken to maintain the facility, and the food is fair at best, but even with the negatives, it’s sprint cars, Florida, usually decent temperatures and some sunshine!
Volusia should be AWESOME! We have been going to the WoO sprints there for the past 9 yrs. (yes, I know it’s forbidden to say anything good about winged sprint cars here, but on some tracks they put on a good show!) and some of us have been saying how good the USAC sprint cars would be there. Some great food within a half hour of Volusia too!! |
Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
At least one of the Xtreme sprint shows at Volusia was very good last year.

Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
Just looked at the Living Legends of Auto racing Facebook page, and their events fall on this week as well. Brent T Funk and I just happened to stumble across their group back in 2013 by accident and we went to their fundraiser for their museum while we were in the neighborhood.
I've wanted to go back and check out what else they have going on during the day in between races. Vintage race car meet and cruise, the fundraiser, "Coffee with the characters" and so on.... I'll have to give this some thought.... |
No press release from USAC on their website, their Facebook page or on IOW that they are sanctioning the 2 shows at Volusia. Is Volusia using the USAC name to describe the type of sprint cars running Monday and Tuesday at Volusia? Would think USAC would have already sent out a press release if they were sanctioning it.
|
I doubt WRG and their army of lawyers would step on USACs trademark if they weren't sanctioning it. USAC PR has been awfully quiet this off-season though, in regards to next season

Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
If memory serves there was a midget race at IRP this season that was a USAC event. Then after much discussion on this board after the hero that won wasn’t really legal we heard it was but wasn’t a Usac event. There were one or two guys in Usac shirts there and an announcer but it wasn’t really officially maybe a Usac event. The facts were cloudy at the time and depending who you believed at the time it was hard to know what really was the truth. The events at Volusia might or might not be a Usac event depending on whether it’s a PR deal for them or not. We will have to wait til after next wknd’s schedule release and see if Volusia appears and maybe it comes up as SE (special event). Time will tell but you better get all of the facts before complaining about it.

I used the IRP example of people not being clear on what is and what is not a Usac event to try and prove a point. There was a lot of confusion this summer about that stays. Any further questions on this matter should probably be directed to Funk. He appears to know more than any of us on here. Once again my apologies if you took offense personally as that was not my intention. |
I would like to know what the race teams think about going to Florida to begin with. It seems to me that the expense of the trip would be better spent on getting more teams to go to Eastern Storm. I don’t see the need for it myself. And how can anyone celebrate racing at Volusia? A great big half mile, you know a “ motor eater” worse than Terre Haute.
|
I love Volusia, and not just because it's now my "home" track. I used to love it as a paved track when Namars raced there and the All Stars raced on the old 3/8 dirt that's now the kart track. It's big, fast, and exciting. The racings good. Track prep is good. Maybe a "motor eater", but unlike Terre Haute they race weekly at Volusia (hell, they had a 360 sprint race last night), so it can't be too rough on equipment. Plus it'll get your sponsors in front of a lot of eyeballs, and maybe we can convert some of those late model fans

Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
The USAC schedules as has been true for years are released at PRI.
|
And for the 50th time on IRP. USAC sanctions the USF2000, Indy Pro Series, SRO, and Porsche Sprint Challenge. Kirk Spridgeon isn't in race contorl, Sammy isn't on the side by side, Dave Thompson isn't standing by a NOS start can and Richie isn't staying up until 4 am hammering out Mosport results. It is for issues like credentials, licensing and insurance. That is exactly what the situation was at IRP. I don't know how many times it is required to go over this.

Re: USAC Sprints at Volusia in Feb
Not me, I'm perfect......
Fire away :) That said, I didn't see it working, I wanted it too. To get more $$$ races for NW sprints. I'm glad Volusia is running them again USAC or not, It's good for teams to have five in a week instead of two or three in order to travel. Also USAC went the distance to prove the tire test were wrong and not just suspend and be done with it teams committed to your series. Would JG have won if Bubba have stood when several others with same date stamp on tire passed? |

Must have been 2013. USAC actually ran midgets on pavement at New Smyrna that February, and I swear it had to be 32 degrees by the time we left. Us Florida folk aren't built for that cold
