Re: Winchester triva
I only followed the "Roaring Roadsters" on dirt, maybe Salem a time or 2. Which one of them owned the Flying A truck stop, just off I69? Which one of them was the first, I believe, to show up with an Overhead Valve V8. Another of my hometown favorites, lost his life at Langhorne, and yet another at Salem. Bob

My dad bought that car off of Engle, later sold it to Paul Fortney, then it went to some guy in Anderson after that. When we aquired the car, it was pretty cobbled up.

Re: Winchester triva
Home town is Columbus, In. Red Amick was my "favorite", Roy Prosser showed up one night at Columbus, In, with I believe, a Chrysler products OHV V8. Crocket drove a flatdead Ford 6 cyl, owned by Dan Walls, where I "grew up", in his shop. That was one bad "half dozen". I rode in the woods, with Larriet, he had his left leg broken, and was riding a WWll 45cu in Harley, and when we'd come to a hill, where he couldn't use the foot brake, he'd just slide off, and let the ole Harley go, and he'd slide down behind it. Lots a good memories from those days, we weren't able to follow them on the summer circuit, Columbus, and Franklin were about the extent of it. Bob

Re: Winchester triva
If you Google, Mutual Racing Association, you'll find photos and articles about the "Roaring Roadsters". The "Roaring Roadsters" were the first race cars I can remember watching as a little boy at Sun Valley(Anderson Speedway), Winchester, and Mt. Lawn. The old news articles are interesting.

Re: Winchester triva
Butch, I'm just reading your post, I just got one from Scheffel, about something else, but I know you guys get together once in a while, so I'll try to make one soon. Duke, yes, I'm near Grammer, name does sound familiar, but that part of the memory hasn't been used lately, so the dust is real thick, but those were some "innovative racing days", we always looked forward to the Ca guys coming in for the season. Best there ever was. Bob

Re: Winchester triva
Were the tenderloins good today? Always are! See they've torn down Norris's Shell Station, now I'm lost, trying to find White Castle! Duke, Butch drove for Nugent Auto Supply, about the same time Jim was driving for Columbus Auto Supply, am I close on that, Butch? I was doing go-karts at the time, had a lot of machine work done at both places, you could get race engine work done on about any street corner in Columbus then, I was building a 3/8 X 3/8 flatdead for my A coupe about then ,and was having at least 4 of the shops doing work, that's what Mr Godfrey Harrison wanted, I worked for him, and he expected me to spread it around. Fleetwood always had a lot of interesting stuff he was working on, dual mag setup, Jiggler heads for the 60's, think he even had some Ardun stuff in there at times. Later!

Re: Winchester triva
Part of the problem, with tracking some of the older drivers, not to mention memory, is the fact that AAA, CRA,WRA, and a few others, were fighting to keep drivers from crossing over, so a lot of "inventive" names were posted, something Tony Stewart has done, and others. If you want to do some interesting reading, just Google "Red Amick", for a start, even some of the stuff we've been discussing in the last week, is there. I found this, on www.champcarstarts.com Richard "Red" Amick, born Kansas City, Mo, 1929, died 1995.
