The Big Screen

So on the wonderful Flo racing, Tyler and Blake get Kyle Larson on to watch and comment on last year’s Chili Bowl win. During the interview Kyle says without the Big Screen, Grant beats him and he’s like 3rd or 4th. Dad and I were discussing it this morning and wanted to hear your opinions on the subject. Should the monitors be blank, or show sponsors during live racing and only used for replays? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts

Pitdad 12/24/21 12:55 PM

Larson wouldn't be the first winner to mention using the big screen as a rearview mirror. I too dislike the ability to use the turn 1 big screen, but as a spectator, I do find it necessary for viewing the race from some of the seats (particularly from the pit GA seats in turn 2).

Re: The Big Screen

Delay the live action on the big screen by 10 seconds (at least a full lap) and use for all replays. That should "disorient" the drivers enough to prevent them from using the big screen as a mirror/spotter. Most fans can see the racing in real time and all can glance up to see action they just missed, plus replays of significant events. OR don't mess with it at all if you prefer "defensive" racing.

Re: The Big Screen

Drivers use the score board to see what other drivers are doing during a race. The big screen adds another element, instead of just knowing who is behind you and coming through the field you might be able to see the lines they are running and use that to your advantage. It doesn't matter much to me as a fan, the only time I don't like the big screens is when they block the view of the fans.

I remember my brother and others commenting on using the screens at places like the dome races, way back then.

Watching TV at full throttle in a midget, have at it drivers. At least their not texting

TQ29m 12/24/21 3:44 PM

Orr, build in a delay, but that might not be a good idea, someone might stop to reorient themselves.

My vote is a a delay.

Re: The Big Screen

They do this at Eldora too and block accordingly. I think the actual at track video screen should show running position and replays only Interviews. that kinda thing.

Also mentioned, A delay would stop all that.

If a driver is talented enough to glance at the screen, all while paying attention to other cars, lapped traffic, the flagman and still able to hit their marks, then more power to them. I just wonder how many times a driver glanced at the screen only to miss his marks and end up losing positions or crashes. I doubt if anyone would admit to that. Anybody know if they’ve ever heard any driver confess to that?

I did that once, Chief. I was in Bremerton, WA driving down the road and looked off at the Cascade Mountain range one evening. The guy in front of me stopped. I missed my mark all right. Ruined the front end of a perfectly good AMC Spirit and the back end of an old Dodge Swinger. He took it well. Earl Gallagher was the name of the shoe in the other car. I'll never forget that. Cut me a lot of slack and never cared to call the cops to report it.

Seriously, though, this is a good topic. I agree that if a driver can manage the car, the track, and still manage looking at the TV, all the power to him or her.

Sometime in July of 1980.

I wish I knew how to post a picture on here, but instead I’ll type JG’s reply off Twitter.
“When you get to the top, it’s so much more than just going fast It’s a game full of tricks that most never see.
Big screen is a tool, but Larson has a bag full.
3 more weeks.
Spent the last 49 trying to add to mine.”
I hope Justin does one spot better this year

Sorry, my bad, I didn't hear the first chorus of this song, I posted in error, but it wasn't like starting over, carry on, I'll just listen, yall have a great holiday.

Doesn't seem like it favors any driver with the same info available to all at the same time. Although it does bring up the old stories how Ronnie the Shoe and maybe McSpadden watching a clock during time trials and gaming the clock to improve their heat position. I don't recall if that was at Manzanita or somewhere in Cali.

Announced today, next year they are moving the video screen to turn 2. If you have Flo there’s a short video of Matt Wood explaining the move. Said if driver’s want to use it then they got to be a bad mo fo next year.

My favorite story of watching the screen was from Kevin Olson. He was racing somewhere in the 70's. There was a X rated drive in by the track. Going down the back stretch, he was watching the screen. He flipped going into turn 3.

My gripe with Chili Bowl screen is that lap count is so damn small that I can't read it (or is it even there?) Its important, right? Just make the it BIG! :14:

What next? Mirrors! 😁

They tried that one year (1977?) Sleepy was so good at racing with his mirrors they banned it for the next year.

Driving from the big screen is amazing enough for me, but Frank Flud claimed he knew there was traffic behind him because he saw the drone following him. He said if the drone was following him, he new something big was going on.

How in the world do you see the drone flying above you, especially with a sun visor????
