Kyle Larson is the greatest driver of all time

There i said it, simply the best ever. Even at 28 years young has accomplished so much. And i dont want to hear Steve Kinser Rich Vogler or anyone else. No one can win 3 nascar races in a row then hop in a sprint car and dominate that as well. Appreciate him folks we'll never see anyone like him again!

I personally think Parnelli Jones is right up there. :8:

I'll admit he's good, but look what he's got as equipment and help, I'm not ready to put him on that pedestal yet, may never, I've seen a lot, do more, with less. He does remind me of others that were good enough to walk in his shoes, but some of his other personalities could use some help and time.

Ever hear of a guy named AJ FOYT? ;) :8:

why does every one go to this argument about equipment? do you think donny, brad, sheldon, carson, and gravel all have worse equipment than he does? no. hes just that damn good. if anything, silva's equipment is worse than full time outlaw equipment. did you not see what he did in the 42 car? and the results that that car has posted since his departure?

I don't think you can put a best ever tag on a driver at that age. He's an exceptional talent and has the potential to be ranked in the top all time, but needs to keep at this pace for a while longer.

Re: Kyle Larson is the greatest driver of all time

Most don't jump in new cars they've never drove, At tracks they've never raced in just about any type of car and win first time out.

KYLE DOES

And he does it in cars that aren't setup well. He'll find a line the car will work best at and over perform. When he won his first ultimate challenge, He drove a line nobody else did or could make work and ran away with it.

AJ.
Mario,
Kinser
All would become stellar and Kinser could even make a car that wasn't right finish five possitions better than it should. But who knows Kyles Limit. I wouldn't put it passed him to be a first time dominating winner of INDY given the chance.

Chuck I agree with the Indy part, But think we"ll have to wait to find out about the rest. Really I don"t think you can compare drivers from different times , The cars are and were so different and different tracks. Its a whole new ball game today than back then :D

simply the best ever? Absolute Versatile talent we see only once in a while. Love his desire to compete and win in anything four wheels! Arguably ONE of the best in a wing 410 yes, midget yes, Silver Crown maybe, NASCAR Cup maybe, non wing sprint car good but no longevity, Dirt LM good but too few, IMSA good but too few, IndyCar not offered yet, F1 not offered yet. Turn a few more of those to YES and we have a strong argument for a GOAT! Enjoy this debate. What fun to woulda, shoulda, coulda.

He has to win Indy and Daytona to get to to the top tier. See "Triple Crown of Motorsport".

ronmil 6/15/21 4:17 PM

As far as pure talent, he is arguably the best I have ever seen, right up there with Parnelli Jones, who topped A J Foyt in the talent department. A J Foyt was determined to win and worked his arse off to come in first. A J was blessed with good luck at Indy also.

Pete Wright 6/15/21 5:11 PM

I've enjoyed watching many incredibly skilled and brave racers in my lifetime and Larson is certainly one of them. However I can't name anyone of them as the "best ever" and why would I even try. Just enjoy the racing and forget the rating.

Ahh - The Great Debate!

No one will ever know b/c they were the "Greatest of their generation" and there will be many more to follow in their footsteps.

No different then the debate of: Michael Jordan (vs) Lebron James at the center of the Greatest of all time NBA saga!

They both played 2 different styles of basketball with a great deal of success and for the generation they played in it worked.

Larson no doubt will go down as the next: AJ Foyt / Tony Stewart / etc based on his ability to win in various forms of racing for his generation but the greatest of all time will continue to be the most debated topic in all sports. :)

Ill grab a box of popcorn and enjoy the debate from here :6:

Not to fan the flames, but for one to be judged greatest ever several series championships usually are on the resume.

Ron You"re my buddy BUT I disagree with you on this. Parnelli won Indy once and should have been black flagged then cuz of a cracked oil tank with several drivers complaining about the oil. I believe MR. Foyt won 4 500"s with no leakage. Yes Foyt was a deternined driver , BUT you got to have a awful lot of talent to win that race 4 times , much less even once . ;)

openwheelfan1 6/15/21 11:39 PM

There is no argument Larson is a great talent. MAYBE One of the best. Where I do take exception is calling him THE BEST ever. There have been a few drivers that have gotten on a hot streak for a year, or even two, then fall off and suddenly become human again. The great drivers, the ones that in my mind deserve to be in the best ever discussions, win in multiple disciplines for years at a time. At this time, I would consider AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, and Parnelli Jones to meet MY criteria. All three won in sprint cars, sport cars, stock cars, and Indy cars for over a decade (no Parenelli didn’t win in Indy cars outside of the 60’s, but he won in other disciplines). If we want to look at just the short track side of things, then MY list would be a little shorter, consisting of Steve Kinser and Jack Hewitt. Both won in multiple short track disciplines, with a wing and without and won for 20+ years. All of the drivers listed had a demonstrated ability to take a less than perfect car and carry it to victory lane.

Kyle is very good…right now. If he keeps it up for a few years, he will be worthy of being a part of the discussion of best EVER.

dsc1600 6/16/21 6:17 AM

He’s certainly on a good trajectory but he hasn’t accomplished near enough to be considered the GOAT of anything. The only thing we can say for sure is that he’s the best dirt track driver of his generation. Mario won Indy, Daytona and an F1 title so the bar is extremely high.

Sure would have been great to see if Bryan Clauson could have been mentioned in all-time greats. He was just figuring out Indy cars and was working his way to a World of Outlaws tour deal. He had already proved he was one of the USAC all-time greats.

Re: Kyle Larson is the greatest driver of all time

The title of the post was greatest driver. It doesn't say most successful driver. Given the success he has had in as many variations of motorsports in very short timeframes, I'd have to agree. I think he is the best driver. However, he is not the most successful driver of all time. Which is what most people base their dissention on.

There is no such thing as the greatest driver of all time.

Truphy 6/16/21 10:53 AM

Where’s the argument of “best equipment” end? I watched a late model race where Larson lapped up to like 6-7 place. Won by like 30 seconds I think. He passed a lot of years of experience and I’m sure the regulars don’t have junk equipment. I just don’t buy the best equipment argument. Put me in the top dollar stuff and I’ll just wreck if faster most likely.

Another candidate for post of the year. I think a lot of us could wreck top dollar stuff if we were given the chance. :5::5::5:

Re: Kyle Larson is the greatest driver of all time

Strictly speaking as a fan or motorsports, for me, a real difference between Larson and Stewart vs a Foyt/Jones/Andretti is how well documented and the coverage of their careers is.

The old guard had newspaper or magazine articles, being in person to witness and good ole word of mouth to spread the legends of the greats. Of course we have video of the titans during the Indy 500 and other prestigious events, but the sheer comprehensive coverage of Larson from a young age will allow future generations a more accurate comparison when talking about the whose who. The sheer amount of archived first hand accounts that will be preserved for Larson will far outweigh what we have today of Andretti/Jones/Foyt, etc. That alone, people being able to SEE the man in action for generations to come may allow Larson to surpass his peers. After all, seeing is believing right? Talk is just... talk... until you cross AJ anyway :3:

He is good. Real good but dont think he could beat the King in his hey day so easy. So let just stop that he is the greatest wing racer. We all know who that is. He can win in almost whatever he drives. Would love to see how he would do I a non wing. Why don't he show up for sprint week? I think he is money ahead for getting canned from Ganassi and racing dirt last year and winning. Then to get a good ride at Hendricks which most are not surprised that he is winning.

DaleDuBois 6/16/21 7:49 PM

Re: Kyle Larson is the greatest driver of all time

Larson is just ahead of the other drivers by 2 or 3 years by the way he drives over the way the other best drivers are now. They will catch up in maybe 2 years. When you set in the grandstands and watch a race you will see drivers that will take chance and drivers that just follow. No one wins by following but drivers taking a chance will win races when they figure out what to do in traffic. Some drivers pinch the car going into the corners and loose lots of speed. The fast guys win because they let the car go where it wants to go at long as it stays on the track. Letting a car stay straight in the corners and not all hung out adds speed down the straights. I know this because I won races and placed good with engines with lot less HP than other racers. What you have to do is to have a car that handles good in the corners.

Kyle Larson is getting closer

Way too early to call him "the best ever"
Mario Andretti & AJ Foyt won in Indy, Daytona & Formula One
But he could get there...
Best of this millenium? Easily....
