Off topic. News

I know many may not care much but I do find it a bit interesting and it involves dirt.

Sources: NASCAR Cup Race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Spring 2021 to be run on dirt. 2020 Schedule likely to be announced tomorrow.

ALSO no Chicagoland Speedway or Kentucky Speedway on the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series schedule

Interesting but I still won’t go🏁🏁👍

Sure would be easier and less costly to just race at Eldora.

I care. A race on a sh!x surface that will be treated like a short track race, heats, blah blah blah with still guaranteed slots for those that have a charter. Bristol was crap as a dirt track for sprints and late models. It will be dry/slick, with hours and hours of practice to dry it out further.

Cup cars need to run 200 or 250 miles on one of the dirt miles.

My everlasting wish is to see Indy Cars on a mile dirt track

Re: Off topic. News

I think many people are being short sighted on this news. Will the Cup cars put on a good race on the dirt at Bristol? Probably not. It will still be a stock car with very limited changes made for the dirt. It is not like they are going to be moving to a Rocket chassis for the race. However, it is going to be a lot of time/effort/money to convert it to a dirt track. I would expect multiple series to run on the dirt. Definitely a WOO sprint car race. Definitely a WOO/Lucas Oil Late Model race. Those races would be much more interesting than the cup cars.

Re: Off topic. News

In my opinion NASCAR may have been thinking about doing this but the formation of the Superstar Racing Experience by Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham hastened NASCAR's decision. And I believe ARCA still runs some dirt tracks or at least they did in 2019 so everyone should have an idea of what to expect.

I certainly won’t go to the nascar event but would like to see USAC and any other sprint series run it while it’s covered. Assuming tix prices are reasonable of course.

Re: Off topic. News

The ARCA guys have put on some great races at the mile dirt tracks at Springfield & Du Quoin over the years. The ARCA cars were very similar to Cup cars before ARCA went to the composite body's and their current engine package. If the ARCA guys can be entertaining on dirt it's reasonable to believe the NASCAR Cup division can be, as well. You can bet Bell and Larson will be tough on a dirt track in Cup cars, that is if Larson gets reinstated back into NASCAR and gets a ride in the 48 car. I believe he will.

Re: Off topic. News

Looks like they might run more then just a NASCAR event on the dirt.

Read about 1/2 way down. Paragraph starts with "This is returning to are roots in racing"

Cup teams will compete on a dirt track for the first time in more than 50 years when the series races March 28 at Bristol Motor Speedway, the track announced.

The full Cup schedule is set to be released at 3:30 p.m. ET today.

“Bristol Motor Speedway has hosted many historic events over the years and we will be adding to that resume,” Jerry Caldwell, general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway, said on Wednesday. “We can’t wait to see how the stars of NASCAR take to the dirt.”

MORE: 2021 Cup schedule features new tracks, bold changes
Said Austin Dillon of the race on dirt: “I’m super pumped. … I’m hoping it becomes a staple.”

Caldwell said the track will work with NASCAR on the race format for the dirt event.

“This is returning to our roots in racing,” Caldwell said. He noted that this concept has been talked about for “awhile.” He also said the track will “explore other options” on any other series that could race on dirt beyond NASCAR.

Caldwell said the change comes from feedback from fans. Marcus Smith, Speedway Motorsports President and CEO, said Wednesday that he pitched the idea of a dirt race at Bristol for the 2020 schedule.

Bristol hosted dirt races in 2000-01 with the World of Outlaws (see video below of 2001 race) and dirt late models. The track used 14,000 truckloads of dirt for the project.

The last Cup race on dirt was Sept. 30, 1970 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds. Richard Petty won a 200-lap race on the half-mile track. He earned $1,000. Petty was among one of five Hall of Famers in the 23-car field that day. Bobby Isaac finished third, Bobby Allison placed sixth, Benny Parsons was 14th, Wendell Scott placed 20th.

The NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Series raced on dirt at Eldora Speedway from 2013-19. It was not held this year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Bristol also will host a second race. That event again will be in the playoffs. The Sept. 18 race again will be an elimination race in the first round. The playoff race will be on the concrete track surface.

NASCAR, NFL, etc. I was done with them before they went "politically correct". I can get a politician to lie to me without buying a ticket. Same thing with Parades. I am sticking with the subject of this website and thank God for it. I gave up on ABC, CBS AND NBC too.. God bless our military and first responders. God bless America. Come on Chili Bowl!!

I could care less about Nascar anymore, even though I wish Briscoe, Bell and the other dirt drivers well.

I do think them putting dirt on it leads to some Sprint Car and LM action on the track again USAC should get in touch.

Longtime sprinter 10/2/20 8:45 AM

Hate to see that no race scheduled for Ky at all. Hope the track can survive, but what would make anyone believe they will come back in 2022? They building an airport, all kinds of improvements, then nascar pulls the rug out. Sad!

Tumey's 55 10/2/20 9:12 AM

I like racing of about any kind, of course sprint cars are my favorite. I don’t watch a lot of NASCAR these days, if I do it will be the last 30 laps or so. I will give kudos to NASCAR for being willing to take some bold moves. The cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks are redundant and do not provide exciting racing. Moving the Brickyard 400 to the road course is a great move, NASCAR on the “oval” is probably the worst race on the circuit. They have contracts with tracks and can’t just eliminate some, likely the reason they are trying dirt at Bristol. Hey, if they run this like a Saturday night short track with heats and then a feature I am all in and will give it a look. In the end, they likely had little choice but to shake things up, ratings, attendance, and sponsorship are all down. I hope this helps, I am never happy when major racing series are struggling.

Don't fret, they kept 2 races at the most boring track Martinsville!
