Larson in a Late Model. Tested a Longhorn & Rumley #6. Pics.

This test was kept a secret to many. No Joke. 2 Pictures below.
Kyle Larson tested on of the Longhorn Chassis house cars with veteran owner and crew chief Kevin Rumley and his #6 car. You could see him soon and some bigger events. This was the same team Jonathan Davenport won the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship with in 2015.

For those that are interested I thought I'd share the pictures.

I wonder if Larson is testing a LM because he is going to be invited to the Eldora streaming LM race that is going to be run in place of the canceled World 100? Hmmmm?!

No Joke. He stated a few weeks back he's like to run the Dirt Track World Championship race at Portsmouth Raceway Park in October. He will likely be running some special events. He stated last year the the Dome race in St. Louis he would like to try one. This has been a few months in the making but no one could figure out what team he would be testing with. I hope he does well. I've always believed Sprint Cars are mostly driver talent. Late Models are Mostly mechanical now a days versus back in the 1990's but a good driver does help. I like others will have my eyes on this when he does race. If your a race fan this could be very cool to see. He may not win right away but I think with seat time he will be good. Guess will all see soon enough.

Looks like Larson could be at Port Royal Speedway for the Lucas Oil Series races. If that’s the case then we’ll all get to see how he does. Sure he will have a learning curve but I don’t think it will take him to long to figure it out. To what degree how fast he catches on don’t know but late models are quite different from open wheel cars. Most of it is set up driven, mechanical, and knowledge of the cars and how they handle with different track conditions.

I can understand him running tin tops cuz they have a lot of big money races talking bout races paying 20 thousand or more. Sure wish our non wing races paid like that :D

As I recall Larson ran at least one of the virtual late model races this spring. I know it's not the same, but I suspect he was intrigued by the possibility of running one live. And now, he needs to be out there making money. This is another source of income. I don't doubt he would do well.

Larson had a good WOO week at Knoxville. Finished first, second and first, ran 80 feature laps and grossed $67,000. Great money for a sprinter, maybe for a late model driver also.

Just in August and counting only race wins Larson won $26,000 at Plymouth, WI, $20,000 at Pevely, MO, and $60,000 at Knoxville.

Not a Late Model guy but if he would have the the same amount of A main wins in Lucas Oil Late Models and is based on winning every Amain from July 18 to September 1 he would have pocketed almost 400,000 in winnings . That’s a no brainer. Most Lucas Oil Late Model wins pay 15 to 40 to 50,000.00 to win. Look up there payout. I don’t understand why Sprintcars can’t pay this to win.

Simple reason why Sprint Cars dont pay that much to win....

Youll get the same cars for $1,400 to win on a Saturday night somewhere in Indiana as you do for $10,000

In Late Models, the top guys wont unload for anything less than 7K to win most times.

Rico needs one also. Talk about a draw!

Nathan,

Based on your post, you must be in the know on Larson's test session. Dirt on Dirt said the test session got rained out before they got any laps in. Did Larson even get in the car?

Chris Nunn 8/19/20 6:08 PM

They were getting ready to get on the track, then it came a monsoon. Decided against practicing on a heavy and tacky track at Cherokee Speedway

Grocery Guy - What Chris said above. From what I've heard. He was in the car getting ready to test at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina when the rain let loose.

I think given some test time and seat time he'll do just fine. I think it will take some getting used to but I think he will do good once he is given time to understand the characteristics of how the car handles with different set-ups and track conditions. Kyle has already show he has the talent now he just needs to put it all together in a Super Late Model. When they are finally able to test I hope there is some video of it for all of us to see.

Sure hate to see Larson getting out of a racecar....

I mean, anything with dead weight like a battery and starter can't possibly be a racing machine right? :)

Thanks Chris and Nathan.

Appreciate the updates. You could see a little sunlight in those photos, that's why I was asking. Stinkin rain. Would have been awesome to see some videos of his test session. When you have the Rumley family helping you, you have the best.

I'm with you guys....sure hope we get to see Kyle in a late model. With some practice and understanding, he will gather more knowledge. Looking forward to it. :22:

Would love to see him do double duty at the Gateway Dirt Nationals Dome race in St. Louis.
