OT/Why no celebration?

For the last couple of years, many of us on here have been enraged by oil/fuel costs. Now, with energy costs in reverse no one is celebrating. Of course it is coming at the same time as a monumental collapse of the stock and lending markets, but you take what you can.

I guess in parts of Texas, gas is under $2.00 a gallon.

I look at it as a reduction in my transportation taxes.

Although, I personally don't know if I want to see prices get so low that many of the energy projects in place(tar sands, new drilling etc.) are cancelled. If we don't get a more diverse energy base we will be going through these ebbs and flows for at least the span of my life time.

So on a gloomy Friday in fall in Indiana, we do have something to celebrate.

There is talk down here that some deepwater projects, now in the planning phases, may be put off. New drilling should go on. Here is an article that I read in today's Houston Chronicle about it: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/...s/6075801.html

I paid US$2.63 for Super this morning.

Discuss away. Bright, sunny and clear down here in Houston. Even a comfortable dry 63 degrees F.

:thumb I am happy to see lower gas prices, not below $2.00 a gallon here yet but sure beats the $4.00 we were paying earlier in the year. I think it's human nature to complain when things are bad, it's easy and people agree with it. As far as a more diverse energy base, I would like to see some performance cars built around the E-85 fuel instead of the flex fuel vehicles that are being offered now. Bring back some muscle cars that run strictly on E-85, or a Hybrid that runs on E-85 and batteries. The use of Ethanol only could have some positive health and environmental impacts also. Maybe this gasoline we use every day is a reason for some of the cancer.

I doubt that the price of oil will remain low. OPEC has already decided to cut production in an effort to increase the price of crude. I certainly wouldn't want to believe that they would do anything to help keep the price low. In my opinion, we have to continue to develop alternative energy for the immediate future as well as for future generations.

So far their cut in production has failed to produce any short term rise in futures price. What will drive alternative energy development is, of course, economics.

Don't worry, there will be a storm or refinery fire or terrorist blowing up a pipeline somewhere or some other lame excuse that will drive the prices back up. The oil companies are not going to be satisfied with the profits from $2 gas when they know we will pay pretty much anything they charge.

Re: OT/Why no celebration?

Once the ******** is over the price will go back up, along with additional increases in the price of everything else. I haven't seen the lower fuel costs resulting in decreases of other products like groceries. Maybe that takes time to work it's way out.

******** years always suck for the economy. And usually the first year of a new president is the same. Saw it time and again in our family business.

Oil prices are down 60 percent yet fuel is down only 40 and in some cases only 25 percent. It's 2.19 here in cincy for the 87octain yet returning from Charleston WV yesterday it was universally 2.99 from Charleston to Portsmouth OH before it started dropping.

I don't know if Alky is down or how much.

Diesel is down about a buck. I expect if the economy ever turns around you'll see the same summer spikes starting in may you have the last several years. To offset some of this teams could purchase a 500 or 1000 gallon tank and have it filled,

Chuck, having a double shot of Beam to celebrate :) I bought a Cycle to combat some of the high fuel cost of traveling to tracks like Bloom, THAT and Kokomo.

With OPEC voting today to cut their daily production by a million and a half barrels, look out.A$$holes.

Re: OT/Why no celebration?

I'm not saying that things won't change for either the better or the worse, but things are better for the moment. That is cause for celebration in my book.

In my opinion, I believe this has less to do with elections and more to do with a long upward cycle that was fueled mainly by over-leveraging that anything truely sinister(Other than unattended greed. It's hard to believe that Alan Greenspan didn't think that CEO'S with little regulation wouldn't be greedy) Once the cycle came to a head it reverted backwards like all boom time periods. Now we have to work through all of the deleveraging to cover margins and the like and we will be on a steady upward trend again within the next 2-4 years. It takes something like this period to make people focus on the problems.

Fuel will indeed go up, but hopefully the pipeline for new products for fuels will continue.

Keep driving 15 billion less miles per month than last year and they'll have to cut again. The price will stay down.

Gas prices always go down this time of year and during the winter months. No big deal.

The world needs to cut back! If you want to know the real truth about oil, or the lack of, I suggest reading up on "Peak Oil" and what some experts in oil predicted in the 1950's that is soon to come! You think $4 a gallon was high, wait till you can't even get it and these alternative fuels you're talking about won't come cheap either.

I agree. gas always goes down some in the winter.

After a summer of nearly $4.00 and now they have everyone conditioned to think that $2.50 is cheap... :action-smiley-049:

Wait till our new leader gets tested like his Vp joe ***** said after he is elected.I really think Iran and Iraq are going to get into it and our new president is not going to want our country to get involved! We will think gas at $5 a gallon will be a deal then..
