Just a few observations:

The Western World purse for two days is something like $45,350 and the three day purse for the Oval Nationals is a little over $60,000.

A standard 1 day USAC National Sprint Car Purse is between $19,000 and $20,000. So for the chance to run for the very close to the same money as 5 USAC races in Indiana, we will travel 4,300 miles over a two week period AND get to pay $15.00 more per pit pass each night at Perris.

We figure this trip costs about $10,000 to make each year if we don’t hurt cars or engines. If not for our sponsors and the point’s battle, why would anyone in their right mind make this trip? Is it any wonder the MPHG team cited money as the reason not to go?

I am all for making "big events" out of the USAC National series, but it should also make some financial sense as well. Indiana Sprint Week, the PA swing, the defunct Buckeye Nationals, etc all made sense for teams based in Indiana and the surrounding states. But if USAC wants a true national traveling series the purses will need to increase and the increase should not come out of the competitor's wallets through pit pass increases.

Just my $.02.

He just said if they hurt nothing, it will cost them 10 grand. So, if they win both, they pocket $25,000. So, they essentially a little more than double their cost of traveling. That's IF they can somehow manage to win both (which has only been done once, Jeff Walker/Dave Darland 2005). So, in all likelihood it's a money losing proposition...Ignorance is bliss, isn't it Superduke? ":headbang:" Keep banging your head on that wall. Maybe it will knock some sense into you finally...But, I doubt it.

While I'm not a car owner, Rob, I can feel your pain. And if you look at the Perris website, you'll see that you're racing for $1000 to win on Thursday and Friday....so unless you win, you don't stand a chance of covering expenses. Like you said, other than points, there's no reason for this or the Western to be national series shows. And while owning a race car is like owning a boat(it's a hole in the water that you keep throwing money into), an entry fee and pit passes should not pay the purse...Like someone else posted on the SoCal Board, the racer's pay to entertain the fans.......

$1,000 to win a 25 lap sprint car feature at a "special" event.....wow, that is terrible. Our local 360's get that for a 20 lap feature for a regular weekly show. Look at the drop off from the $12,500 winner on saturday....down to $3,000 for second. I would expect more out of a show that is as prestigious at this.

Re: 2008 oval nationals purse

I think an obvious Band-Aid to this issue, with the purses being cut like they are, is to schedule a race or two on the way out and on the way back -- make the trip viable. I know that increases the bill for pit passes, tires, fuel, etc. and gives you three or four more nights to possibly tear the car up, but at least it brings the reward scenario a little closer to even with the risk factor.

There are plenty of tracks scattered through middle America that would make logistical sense. Tougher than it sounds to get races scheduled, I know, but it would certainly be a step in the right direction towards USAC being a truly national sanctioning body.

I don't care that you raced way back when the wheels were square, the purses have remained the same while the costs have soared. It didn't cost thousands to cross the country when you raced, but it does now. And they are racing for no more money than they were in the 70s. That IS a serious issue, even if YOU refuse to acknowledge it. Nobody said they are looking to make money, they just need to be able to afford to do it. It's a simple premise. Try to understand it, would ya?

Basically what Dean is trying to say is the "Loss factor" has greatly increased since the purses have not changed. As in the amount of money you loose by racing.

I like the way they make Perris a National race then cut the purse makes total buisness sense. NOT... Past oval nationals paid 30,000 to win. Now 12,500 because they only had 45 cars pre register. Nice way to go and the promotor says there not in it for the money who are they trying to kid.

CRA91 10/22/08 11:52 PM

Re: 2008 oval nationals purse

Not only does first place pay less but the purse is less money all the way through Saturdays main event field, last year it paid $500.00 to start this year is only $400.00 to start.I'll bet money that the price of pit passes isn't going to go down from $40.00 last year to $30.00 this year though.

A question I asked on SCRAFAN was, since this is a USAC National and USAC/CRA points race why don't they honor our USAC membership cards and give us the same discount that we recieve all season long on pit passes instead of charging a flat rate for everybody just for this race?

Why are you screaming? All caps is screaming on a computer, in case you were unaware. What's wrong? Don't you know how to use the shift key to capitalize the proper letters? And why do you feel the need to give three answers to three different questions? Can't you answer all of your detractors with just one post? Or can you simply not formulate your thoughts so concisely?

And I think that the Hoffman's can run with the big dogs, seeing how they are leading the National Points and won one of the events that we are talking about just last year. From last place no less.

And how can it be that I am part of the problem? Being part of the problem would be someone who blindly says to car owners that they can "get rich" by winning both races, that they have "no problem" with money when they say they do, all the while admitting that no one can "make money" owning a race car, that "tracks are closing next year", that there will be "a lot less fans" in 2009, that teams should "just not go", and should "stay on the porch" because they aren't "the big dogs". All these sentiments in quotations are yours, and the rationale (or lack thereof) behind these disjointed crackpot theories of yours is all over the map. I mean, if people listened to you, no teams should go, no fans will be going, and tracks will be closing left and right next year. The sport is doomed according to Superduke. Or, "Chicken Little" as we now should call you.

Furthermore, I have an intellect that clearly far exceeds yours both in terms of aptitude, and communicable application and execution, and for you to actually presume that you are somehow winning this alleged "battle of wits" you think you started is not only beyond laughable, but simply makes you look like a crazy old man who has obviously lost all of his faculties. Enough said.

Hey guys, time to quit picking on Duke. It's obvious in his dotage that he's become a keyboard commando...and he's even got a new motto.....

" The older I get, the faster I was......"

And he proves his intellect, too....by calling everyone who disagrees with his rants an "a**"...

How about the other 99% of the time you got your ass handed to you? Beating anybody a couple of times, doesn't make you good. You're proof of that. Running 15th and “beating them” because they dropped out doesn’t really count.

If you really think you belong in that company, you really do need to check into a mental institution. :kookoo I'm done making you look like a moron. You do a good enough job of that on your own.

Dean I was not dissing you in any way. I completely understood what you were saying but I knew 'The Legend In His Own Mind' would not get it. The fact that he bases his statemnts on owning cars 20 years ago further shows he has no clue. I have talked to many car owners about expenses. I'm sure Dean has as well. So yea we have a clue... moreso than you. Here's an idea Duke... stick with talking about the good old days. Your perspective is bit skewered but we keep that in mind when you speak. Oh and by the way, how about answering things instead of insulting people. It will help your credibility tremendously.
