John Paul JR
Anyone know what ever happened to him or his dad.
|
Re: John Paul JR
I don't know about JR., but SR. may still be doing time.
|
Re: John Paul JR
I saw John Paul Jr at the IRL race at Infineon but can't tell you what he is doing
|
Re: John Paul JR
Jr. was coaching some drivers in the Indy Pro Series , though I didn't see him this season.
I found this about his dad on Wikipedia. To my knowledge he was never found. John Lee Paul (born Hans-Johan Paul, December 3, 1939 in the Netherlands) was an American racecar driver. After his racing career he served a 15-year prison sentence for a variety of crimes including drug trafficking and shooting a Federal witness. In 2001 he disappeared on his boat while being sought for questioning by officials regarding the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. |
Re: John Paul JR
Was his dad part of the Randy Lanier deal.

Re: John Paul JR
Randy's as well as the Wittington Bros from Indy were seperate from John Pauls.
"The Pauls had their first legal troubles when on January 10, 1979, Paul Jr. and Christopher Schill was caught by customs agents loading equipment onto a pickup truck on the bank of a canal in the Louisiana bayous after dark. Following questioning, when one of them smelled marijuana on their clothing, Paul Sr. was apprehended on his 42-foot boat named Lady Royale, where customs discovered marijuana residue and $10,000 on board. A rented truck was discovered nearby, which contained 1,565 pounds (710 kg) of marijuana. In court, all three pleaded guilty to marijuana possession charges, where each was placed on three years' probation and fined $32,500. On April 19, 1983, an individual named Steven Carson was shot in the chest, abdomen and leg in Crescent Beach, Florida. Carson had been given immunity in a drug trafficking case. He testified that John Paul, Sr. had approached him, ordered him into the trunk of his car, and shot at him five times as when he fled rather than comply. Paul then fled when a companion of Carson's began shouting. Paul was arrested, but while out on bail fled before his trial. Paul was apprehended by Swiss authorities in January 1985, served a six-month sentence in Switzerland for using a false passport, and was extradited back to the United States in March 1986. At the same time, Paul's son John Jr. pleaded guilty to racketeering and received a five-year sentence, but refused to testify against his father, who had been indicted as the ringleader of a drug trafficking ring that including included, among others, both Johns, and John Sr.'s father, Lee. On June 4, 1986, Paul Sr. pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder and received a sentence of twenty years, later expanded to twenty-five years after additional sentences were added. Paul was paroled on July 2, 1999, but soon ran into more problems. In 2000, Paul met a woman named Colleen Wood, who would end up moving in with Paul on his 55-foot schooner. In December of that year, Wood disappeared, never to be heard from again. Police questioned Paul in connection with the disappearance, but no charges were filed. Paul shortly after disappeared himself, likely in violation of his parole. As of 2008 the case remains unsolved." |
Re: John Paul JR
So I take it that JR is on the up and up now.
|
Re: John Paul JR
Yes, very much so. He's been very helpful to IPS drivers, especially on the road courses.

Re: John Paul JR

Re: John Paul JR
Randy Lanier along with Ben Kramer, owner of Apache boats, ran a multi million dollar drugs empire between 1982 and 1986 when the arrest took place. Kramer was the great-nephew and one of the putative heirs of the top boss of the U.S. crime syndicate, Meyer Lansky.
He was convicted of importing and distributing over 300 tons of Colombian marijuana and was due to be sentenced when he disappeared. He was arrested eight months later in Puerto Rico. Lanier had also cut a deal after his arrest for conspiracy to distribute pot, but at the last minute refused to testify against Jack Kramer, father of Ben. Randy Lanier received a life without parole sentence on 4 October 1988 under the newly enacted RICO laws along with his partner Ben Kramer for their lack of cooperation. The Whittington brothers who were also involved received a lighter sentence. Lanier filed an appeal based on the fact that later RICO convictions were not nearly as lengthy, but lost the appeal. He has remained in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary since imprisonment. His subsequent appeals have all been denied. After suspicion of a planned escape in 1996, he spent three years in solitary confinement. Lanier's wife, Maria De La Luz Maggi-Lanier, was sentenced on April 30, 1993 to nine years in prison for money laundering. She pleaded guilty in September the year previously to conspiracy and obstruction. Lanier nowadays spends most of his time working out, playing chess in the maximum security unit and corresponds to his pen pals. |
Re: John Paul JR
What NOBODY gets LIFE for hauling pot. That sounds a bit harsh.People have commited much worse crimes and got off with a whole whole lot less.Or am I missing something.

Re: John Paul JR
Maybe you missed the 300 ton part.... that is considered racketeering or crime syndicate distrabution i think...
RICO (Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act), a person who is a member of an enterprise that has committed any two of 35 crimes—27 federal crimes and 8 state crimes—within a 10-year period can be charged with racketeering. Those found guilty of racketeering can be fined up to $25,000 and/or sentenced to 20 years in prison per racketeering count. which probably means they got him on more than just the distribution, and the sentences plus a 3 strike law, added up to LIFE 300 tons at $2 million a ton = $600 MILLION.... |
Re: John Paul JR
I guess that does add up to alot of time. But heck people who murder get out at some point. But if you do the crime you better be ready to do the time!

Re: John Paul JR
Another quick John Paul take -- I was driving in race morning to anniounce the IRL race at PIR and it was pretty early. I was on that two lane road that took you to the turn 4 side of the track. I was going probably 5 miles or so over the speed limit when John Paul passed me just a few hundred yards from the track. He was drinking a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, and driving with his knee - it was funny

Re: John Paul JR
I was at the Charlotte IRL race in '99 when the wheel went into the stands and killed three fans. John Paul, Jr. was involved in that accident that led to that happening. He was staying at the same motel that we were in and I saw him in the lobby. We shared in the sorrow of what happened and he was truly a beaten down man. I have never seen anybody more distraught over an incident than he. I felt so sorry for him.

Re: John Paul JR
I just saw a artical in a sport news listing talking about Michael Vick being kicked off the prison football team and it had a statement from his head coach Randy Lanier.
|
Re: John Paul JR
At http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/LocateInmate.jsp you can find the location and release date of any federal prisoner. According to the site, Vick is in Leavenworth (Kansas) and Lanier is in Coleman which is in central Florida. But maybe one of them have been moved.
|
Re: John Paul JR
It did say vick had got in trouble over what I dont know so they may have moved him to the big house. But as for Lanier is their any chance he will ever see the outside of prison.I know it says life but cant you still get credit for time served and good behavior. These guys should all wright a book, one day they have the world by the @#% and then boom its all gone.It just makes you wonder what makes some of these guys tick. They were all pretty good drivers and had the chances of a life time.

Of the people who got cought up in all of this how many have really changed their lives.I dont know any of them. But I do know that good people do get into some real bad spots at times. It is interesting how that many people got pulled into the same trap.Just think how many that did not get cought that ran in the same group. Were they thugs or just made some bad choices.

Re: John Paul JR
I too was and still am a John Paul Jr. fan. I am glad to hear that he is doing well and still involved in racing. This thread has been very interesting to say the least. The one post following the death of some fans was very touching. Sounds to me that I was right about this man years ago and that unfortunately he made a mistake. Thanks for all the posts about John Paul Jr. :applaud:

Re: John Paul JR
The culprit was John's dad - this was well recognized by everyone - he got a break - deserved the break - and always struck me as a fine person

Re: John Paul JR
It's funny this thread came up, I've been following the Whittington's story for years. It's still ongoing to this day. Better than any Hollywood movie. The 3rd brother to qualify for Indy, Dale, actually died from a drug overdose a few years ago, he was active in the "family" business. A bit too active apparently. Allegedly, Don is currently involved with the CIA, supplying drug planes to the government. This was allegedly discovered when one crashed in Mexico, full of drugs, the pilots fled the scene, and the plane was traced to Don. It's a very long and interesting story. Lots of conspiracy! Great reading if you're into that stuff. Anyway, below is an example. It's a wordy article but I promise, you will be shaking your head and wanting to read more! Someone in Hollywood has GOT to get ahold of this story!

Re: John Paul JR

I'm pretty sure they are cousins not brothers. They and their families are all good people.
It sure seems like they went to prison for the same things gas stations do to people every day. |
