POWRi National Midgets Open In FL. in 2018

http://www.powri.com/news/?i=54573

Hmmm. We've been thinking about going to Florida in February in 2018. This might be the incentive we need to pull the trigger on that deal!!

Bob, are you game?!

Yes, saw this on SpeedSport this morning. POWRi midgets at Bubba Raceway Park on February 9th and 10th. Hopefully they can book a couple extra dates at East Bay or Volusia to make it worthwhile for the midget guys to haul that far south. We will see you there on the 9th and 10th.

North Florida Speedway in Lake City, Florida would be a good track for them.

addictedtodirt 10/26/17 10:56 AM

Thrilled that there will now be a midget race to attend the weekend prior to USAC sprints. Kudos to BRP and POWRi for getting this done!

Dirtfan 10/26/17 1:41 PM

Add a couple of nights at Volousia and we're in!

Dirtfan 10/26/17 1:43 PM

I agree this is great for the series and the fans, but now I will address the elephant in the room:

The WoO Sprints are running at Volusia both of those nights. The Friday & Saturday night events at Volusia draw the most fans, by far, for all of the sprint races during the DirtCar Nationals. If somehow POWRi could have staged their two events the two nights before the USAC Sprints at Bubba's I think they would actually have a larger audience to play for, even though it is mid-week.

Or maybe run at least the Saturday POWRi event during the day? That way, you'd get a good crop of Volusia fans to go to Bubba's by day and back to Volusia by night.

Not that I am a promoter, but going head-to-head with the WoO who are only 40 miles away on two nights..... good luck with butts in the seats. Nonetheless, I applaud POWRi for attempting this venture. :8:

With every half full glass there is a half empty one.

Yikes. Good point Mike i hadn't checked the schedule, but this is a problem. There's plenty of time to move it to pair up with the USAC sprints. Hopefully it all works out. :22:

I see your point but here's my take on this it's like when the non-wing sprint cars are here you can watch them or go watch the wing cars at east bay depends what you like I'm always going to choose the non wing cars. if I had a choice go to the world of outlaws or watch the midgets I'll always choose the midgets, yes it would be great to have the chance for extra fans but not all woo fans are non wing fans jmo

What about the Gorilla in the room? POWRi traditionally has never drawn great outside of their foot print. The entire weekend sort of hinges on whether or not the Kunz cars make the trip.

I'm following you 100% when you refer to the USAC/ASCS Bubba's/East Bay scenario when all is going on at the same time in two different places.

But I think there is a lot more cross-pollination between wings and non-wings than one might think. Especially in February in Florida. We drive down there to watch the DirtCar Nationals mainly. But if I could slip in POWRi, or even a night, or two over at New Smyrna Speedway for the World Series of Asphalt, count me in. After traveling that far, I'd rather be at a track watching things go fast in the counter clockwise direction than tanking up in a beer joint. I can always do the latter and do not have to travel NEARLY that far in February to do so.

The success of an event is pretty much defined by the number of fans who show up. I just think POWRi could "massage" this a little and please the fans, subsequently pleasing the series and the event(s).

If I could be in two places at once I'd be twice the fan I am now.

interpreter66 10/26/17 10:37 PM

Remember also people that are here for racing vacation will go any night of the week so for them to draw fans that are local and being a local meaning within a 2 Hour Drive it has to be on a weekend because they're not on a racing vacation .having said that I'll be there no matter what night it is🙂

Re: POWRi National Midgets Open In FL. in 2018

I love the fact that all of these tracks provide a fully stocked buffet for us freezing northerners' God bless Bubba for continuing to schedule races in an already crowded month. Oh, nobody mentioned Saturday is historically the same night as the ARCA race and Busch Clash for the stay in the room TV watchers. :44:

MIracing 10/27/17 6:22 AM

I agree with Mike. It's nice to have choices up here and you can pick which event best suits you. The question is if there are enough fans down there at that time to support two traveling series on the same night.

As for the Kunz cars, it is being sponsored by Toyota. My guess is that locks them in for making the trip.

You might also want to consider this... Lucas Oil Southern States Midgets Gator"DIRT"Nationals at Screvens for Winter Freeze that same weekend.

This is cool.

addictedtodirt 10/27/17 12:28 PM

I'll gladly take in a POWRi show over a WoO show any day. There will be more passing in the first two heats than you will see all night at Volusia at nearly half the ticket price. Throw in free camping at BRP and you have a win win situation. See you there!

I hope their race is a success.
I don't want to be a negative post but Powri has issues getting enough cars in their backyard for a 3/8 mile track at Granite City.

One might also wish to consider this pregnant sentence from USAC's September 5 press release, which announced the Sprint Car schedule at Bubba's: "Additionally, further USAC dates in Florida during February 2018 are under discussion."

Good eye, Mark. Good eye. This POWRi thing might morph into something more/else.

grantman 10/28/17 12:05 PM

Its a shame they aren't running with USAC sprints, some of the drivers would take both cars.

BrentTFunk 10/28/17 3:42 PM

Re: POWRi National Midgets Open In FL. in 2018

My guess would be they are renting the track. I think any series would have to have KKM and Clauson Marshall Racing to get a field in the mid 20's that far away from their base. I think the track could be interesting for midgets. With that big sweeping north turn, you will need a stout motor to be competitive. It seems their partner Wayne Davis may take the biggest hit from this. I wish everyone success.

Now that is genius, makes perfect sense and I'd pay extra to see that.:8:

Rich Mersereau 10/28/17 7:40 PM

Good track for midgets, running a USAC Sprint combo would be FAN-tastic.

cshuman 10/29/17 2:56 AM

Definitely not renting the track

After talking with the track owner today we will not be paying $10,000.00 to win as we had plan to do in Feb. 2018. In fact we even spoke of canceling the Gator"DIRT"Nationals for 2018 because of this...Our date was published back in August. It is what it is and the fact we where going........nuff said....Thanks to all that has supported this event the last 6 years. Will keep everyone informed if we have or we cancel in the next couple weeks so you the racer can make the proper changes to your schedule.

After a long phone discussion with track owner at Screvens/Gamecock Speed Complex we have both agreed to cancel our portions of the Winter Freeze 2018 Feb. 8-9-10. Again thanks to all that has supported the Gator"DIRT"Nationals in the past. I have tried to find another track to hold the event at and have been unsuccessful at this point. I am now working/looking for a possible March date outside of the states of Ga./Fl.. It is very had to get the kind of meaningful dollars that this event deserves, but I promise each of you this ....I WILL GO DOWN SWINGING WITH MY BOOTS ON!!!:47:

One thing I just noticed is that both East Bay and Volusia have their respective 2018 Winternationals and DirtCar Nationals schedules posted. Have for awhile. But if you go to Bubba's website, the schedule is "coming soon".

This could still get more interesting.

Or maybe I am just hoping to make something out of nothing as the season ends?

Both of those schedules are made up over a year in advance. Some of the officials and safety team from the Dirt Car Nationals work the big track at Daytona for speed week so their schedule is always tailored around them.

Also I would second POWRI team up USAC for their show since 4 of us that work Volusia have to stay to work the USAC show so they would have quality help and safety for the race. Wish them the best and if they team up then I could see it as well.

Bubba Raceway Park has released their 2018 Winternationals schedule.

Feb 1-2-3: All Star Sprints
Feb 9-10: POWRi Midgets
Feb 11: Lucas Oil Late Models
Feb 15-16-17: USAC Sprints

http://bubbaracewaypark.com/winternationals/

Now, according the THIS article, which I was lead to via TJ's always superb website, USCS Sprints will be on tap with POWRi both night. It will not be USAC. So that ends the wondering about who will pair up on the card with POWRi on the same two nights WoO is at Volusia:
