The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
This is the first time I've seen this since I shot it.

Must have been 1970 when roll cages were still optional.

Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
Al, Rons statement got me thinking, just 38 short years ago roll cages were optional, WOW! What would you have said if someone told you that in 38 years you would be placing your pictures on a machine for anyone in the world to view instantly?

Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
Curious, is this photo taken at THAT?

We were able to transmit these photos over the wire service for use in newspapers. It took about 5-10 ten minutes on the drum scanner to send one all over the world. The technology has probably come farther in the last 10 years than it did in the previous 40. |
Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
I believe it's that Bettenhausen car that sits here in CT out of sight from the entire world.

Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
The 82 car brings back memories of my closest call shooting for NSSN. It was at New Bremen when Merle Bettenhausen and Tood Gibson got tangled up and everyone was scrambling to miss the mess. I was shooting thru a 135mm lens and when I turned my head all I could see was Carl Williams face coming at me. My wife said it was comical from the press box when I ran into the infield fence bounced back about 5 feet and ran into it again. When I went back to my camera bag the track from the left front wheel showed it would have gone right between my legs.

The Bettenhausen car...always wondered what happened to it. Too historical of a car to be trashed. Do you know if it's painted as the City of Syracuse #1, or Thermo-King #24?

Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
I believe it's painted as the City of Syracuse car since that is how I have heard it referred to. The guy who owns it is apparently a bit of a strange guy. He has it but doesn't take care of it and doesn't talk about it, and apparently won't part with it either.

Re: The Johnny, Larry, & Gary Show
Al, I always look first to see what you may have found lately. Carl looks so comfortable with his weight jacker next to him, the mag wheels and those hard Goodyear's. Terre Haute was great even in the day time. I use to play in the infield with friends and would stop as soon as I heard the cars start to line up. And that exhaust pipe taken past the rear wheels. That sound was so cool as they slid off the gas for the corner.
Thanks so much for sharing. George Wilkins |
