Track was the tackiest i've seen it since the 80's. tackier than the opening night USAC show. incredibly fast!!! made it tough to pass in the heats. quite a few yellows in the heats also. HOWEVER! by feature time the track was a lot more racy and it was spectacular!!! swindell, bacon, ballou battle was terrific! during post race interviews, swindell turns cheering fans into boo-birds by crying about ballou not racing him clean. i would say he lost a few fans and needs to pull his foot out of his mouth. that was dumb!!! i didn't see ballou do a thing wrong. crowd was pretty good but, could've been a little better. hope dave and chip were able to put a few bucks in there pockets.

...I can't believe Wreck 'em Swindell had the audacity to cry about somebody else not racing him clean. Even if Ballou had roughed him up (which I didn't think he did), he wouldn't have a bit of room to complain. But, a warm sense of pride enveloped me when my fellow sprint fans showered him with so many boos that the announcer had to just stop and wait for them to end before continuing the interview. :thumb:
I also can't believe motormasher is sitting on here running this race and the MSCS series down. Last night was their 2nd $10,000 to win sprint show of the season. Who else is payin' that to win for a sprint show? Are they perfect? Of course not, but who is? It gets old listening to grown men whine like Swindell all night. Booing cuz they took a 15 minute intermission between the B and the A. What the hell did you want them to go? Leave the 4 transfers from the B on the track and just start pushing the other cars off? Booing at the number of yellow flag laps while their favorite drivers drove double file and seemed to just ignore the lineup boards. If nobody else noticed, the officials seemed as frustrated with it as the fans, so give 'em a break. But, there's always got to be something to complain about. The track was too tacky or the track was too slick; there was too much mud or there was too much dust. The cars were too fast or they were too slow. Not enough passing or too many wrecks. Seriously...enjoy racing. No there wasn't a lot of passing in the heats, but the feature was racy, and the track was scary fast all night long. Not every race is this year's KISS finale with Clayton and Stanbrough slicing and dicing every lap. I'm just glad I get to see the best drivers in the most awesome race cars on some awesome tracks week in and week out. Being a race fan will keep me happy in Indiana for a LONG time to come. I took a first-timer last night, and she loved it (minus getting pelted with mud since we had to sit on the 2nd row). Ok, off my soapbox now. I'm looking forward to the Kokomo clash. |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
Im not gonna complain one bit. You'll never see cars go that fast the whole night and never lift anywhere else.
The track was what it was. You could go foreward but it took patience. Coondog and Shuman came from the back, Coons had problems, Shuman finished fourth. The track was so fast many TOP GUYS and Teams took themselves out by misakes. Thanks Dave and crew for a good night of racing. The last race I'll see on that CYCLONE track (Meaning cars running just as fast as they can go with centrifigal force being the factor :) BTW, I seen at least 4 five gallon buckets full of Tabs. Good job everyone. Chuck, who's two pounds looked small in comparison but it all adds up. |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
Gotta give props to Robert "Stanbrough" lol eight wins a row!:respect:
Tough night when the 53 and Clayton do not make it. :( Can't say I'm totally surprised with Swindell's remarks. I've lost a lot of respect for that kid this year. |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
JordanBlanton,
Not all the boos were at the officals. There were some around me that were booing some drivers that refused to get in line. More important to me than anything last night was no nobody was injured when Williams (?) went through the fence. Thank God. |

Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
What was with the flag man?Every time someone jumped the cush, he would throw an yellow. He even did it when a driver went to the pits.
With all the unneccessary yellows, the cars slow to get in position, the late start(which is the tracks fault) and the late intermission (how greedy can a promoter be?) it made for a late show, this would not have happened with better management. If the show had started on time, it would have been over by eleven. I missed the feature because of the late hour and my need to rise early Sunday AM. Was the problem MSCS or The "Burg's fault. Me thinks it is a combination of both. I do not think they can handle a large car count. This was my 4th trip to The Burg this year and out of the 4 I only saw 1 good well run race. |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
I do believe that was the first race I've been to in a LONG time when there was ZERO dust. That was nice. Other than a few passes for position or passes from mistakes, it was follow the leader (kept looking for the "invisible wings"). The track was a hot laps track all night... plenty fast! I guess you can't have it all for track conditions. Still, had a fun night, enjoyed the company of quite a few IOW'ers and got some killer pictures (thanks Mr. Merritt for the help!). Both nights were plenty worth the price of admission! I too am thankful no one was hurt when the car went thru the fence.
To Dave Rudisell: Even if insurance says nothing, that wonderful catch fence on the front straight should be extended down past the pit stands. I'm sure the Argosy can cough up that money to do it! Also, the bleachers near the top of the last 2 sections.... either H or the small one on the end... there is one set that has a sharp edge near the seatback portion of the bleacher. I found it with my shin and it left me with a rather nasty gash. You might want to find it and fix that... someone could get hurt good on it and could cause the track fits with it! |

my philosophy is, if they're not complaining THROW THE FRIKKEN GREEN!
there were several times last night when the cars were single file and seemed ready to go and they would get their little blackboard out and try to rearrange 14th &15th place! then, it would take three more laps to get that sorted out. also, i agree that the flagman, a couple of times, threw a yellow when someone merely jumped the cushion. |

I am sorry but I would not cut any slack to the Lawrenceburg staff, the track prep was horrible for such a big event. The bottom half of the track was a mud bog when the first session was called out for hot laps. I heard this was done on purpose, the drivers were told, "we know what we are doing, we will work the track, you guys just race on it." SAD... the bottom of the track was BARELY ready to race on by lap 50 of the feature. I am sorry but could you imagine how great the heats and feature would have been if you could use the whole track? It would have taken MAYBE 10 minutes to roll in the whole track with 70 plus cars there, but no, they had push trucks run in the top of the track ONLY, and push off for hot laps! I would say that the track was smoother then normal, and It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that it was due to the lack of the bombers, or street stocks, or whatever it is you call them. 4,000 pound cars on 8 inch wide tires are the reason for rough crappy tracks... The show was still pretty good, but it was because of the class of drivers and cars there last night, nothing else...

i dont know where some of you were at , maybe behind beer cans, but there is no excuse for the track conditions last night at the burg... it is the responsibility of the track management to prepare the surface for some good racing and again they have failed... i have been to this track on several occacsions this season and may have seen one good night of racing... it seen that big clud, with 4 wheels, just cant figure out how much water to put down and when... same thing past several weeks including the big mod show which was also a complete disaster... i would be bery ashamed if i could not figure out how to do my job properly... mr. rudissell you have failed with the people you have and need to pay some experienced people to come in and show you how to properly prepare your surface.......some times it pays to listen ,observe, and admit to fault in order to go the right direction....... you have failed this year and next year i hope you do your homework.... don short

Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
My 1st time to the Burg last night since 1993, I couldn't believe how small the track was. Beautiful facility! To sum up the nite, in my opinion:
1) Who ever got the lucky draw made the feature, if Ballou would of started in the back of the heat, he would of been loading up early with a lot of other great drivers! 2) To pass on the track last nite you would have to race dirty and the bump and run was all Swindell had to do to Ballou and then he would of checked out, he was (by far) the fastest on the track!!! 3) For the track last nite, I blame all the fans that have complained about the dust you encountered at a dirt race this season. Dave gave you "0" dust, and we had to watch follow the leader all nite!!! 4) My son and I still had a great time, but not sure I will drive 4 hours again to see a race like that! |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
As I watched hotlaps I was amazed that nobody and I mean nobody went down to pack the bottom of the race track. I was thinking to myself as each of the what 6 hot laps sessions pushed out that at least 50% of these guys are starting on the bottom and at least 80% of these guys are going to have to pass someone to get in the transfer spot. Not one car went to the bottom to pack it in.
Maybe they told the drivers not to at the drivers meeting ? Not sure, but I do know if I was starting on the bottom or had to pass more then a car or two I would of been down there running the bottom in every chance I got. Lets face it, guys who are known for their soft foot, smooth style struggled last night and guys who are known for their on the gas style came to the forefront. Last night was not about finesse it was about selling out and standing tall in the seat. there was a time when that's what sprint car racing was "alway's" about. Tim |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
For you checked past
I loved the surface 71 cars and it held up all night.I know you guys didn't get to see huggy pole around the bottom half throttle racing and it ran past your bedtime. And yes I was looking through beer goggles cuz you didn't need dust goggles:thumb: |
Re: Lawrencburg updates tonight?
A great night at the 'Burg. Don't know what all the :angry-smiley-007: is about. Where else can you see a field of 71 of the best sprint car drivers on one of the country's legendary short tracks? The track was fast all night and, despite the lack of passing in the heats, the feature more than made up for it. Kudos to Ballou who, temporarily at least, has taken away the title of "Hottest sprint car driver in the country" from Jon Stanbrough. Nice to spend a good portion of the day & evening with Marv Fish, who I don't get to see nearly often enough. Also good to see Gregg, Ed, John Hoover, DannyB, Tom Jennings, and Chuck Nungester. Also met a fellow by the name of Fred Frost, 73 years young, who claims to have attended every Indy 500 since 1946! Now that is a streak. Thank God no one was hurt when Danny Williams Jr. flipped his car into the concession area off turn four landing on the picnic table in front of the concession stand. Got to see why the denizons of Section A get more excited about buying 50/50 tickets than they do about the races!:thumb: And now the local season is down to the Kokomo Klash in 2 weeks.

Sadly, I could not be at Lawrenceburg last night as I had a previous commitment at Eldora for the UMP Nationals. Sounds like a pretty good night of racing and a lot of action. 71 SPRINT cars and no dust. Amazing. Remember the Four-Crown. Remember Indiana Midget Week.
Two previous posts made me think. One about how everyone complaining about dust MIGHT have created the track surface after the criticism in August about the Indiana Midget Week track. And, it was just two weeks ago everyone had a gripe fest about Eldora. Two, Tim Clauson's, about being amazed none of the drivers tried to work in the bottom groove so they could use it. Ronnie Ambrose was one of the best ever in the UMRA TQ ranks and still holds the record for most career wins in the club -- somewhere more than 120. I was watching him one night at Rushville and noticed each caution period he would pull his car to the very inside edge of the track. No one else did so. He did this after his car was started for the trophy dash, the heat race, the feature and all caution periods but NEVER ran that line. That inside line was a gooey and rough when the night started. Guess what. He was running third and the rest of the track had dried somewhat. On a restart, Ambrose pulled to the inside and shot around two cars and into victory lane. After the race, I asked him about it. He had spent all evening running in that line in and when the rest of the track lost traction, he found a little extra grip on that portion in turn two to pull off the pass. I think that's the same thing Tim's talking about. For the record, Eldora was in pretty good shape both nights, track stayed tacky Friday night with 117 mods and 66 late models. Saturday night, track got a little rubber in the middle but very little dust. The racing was pretty good, cars running the top, the bottom and all spots in between. What's the difference between this and two weeks ago -- RAIN. The drought in this area is not over but for once the rain was well timed to help those preparing the tracks this weekend. Jim Morrison |

This is a practice that I feel should be adopted by many organizations, if the drivers know you are serious and could wind up on the tail or in the pits for their actions, they will start getting in line as instructed. |
