The oldtimers on here will remember those days of the flat head fords with a hook welded on the dash to hold the car in second gear. The 1/4 mile was in front of the grandstands and used the straightaway of the mile horse track where ronnie householder won a number of aaa midget races.
First usac sprint car race aug. 5, 1962 new bremen, oh. When it was still dirt. Don branson was the winner in the iddings 93 car. Unfortunately that was also my first fatality, don davis who crashed after taking the checkered flag.

Saw my first at bellclair speedway in the early 50's. Dandy don wasn't there yet but came in like a thunderstore in 58. But in 76 at lake hill speedway, he only lost one feature, in a ford powered mercury capri, to kenny schrum, a long time rival. I still have the program from that night and enjoy sharing the memories. Yes dandy don is still racing a late model at bellclair and just completed 54 seasons, in 6th place in points. Not bad for an old guy.

I still go to breakfast with the Toledo gang whenever we are in Ohio, Rollie, Donnie Harrell, Jerry Nemire,Cliff Harris, etc. :6:

My first race was at Hagerstown Speedway in the summer of 1965. I don't remember much about the race as I was only 3.5 years old, but I do remember seeing a race car at a local garage and we started going to the races shortly after that.

About 1956 at 13 years old, A little known track Alviso spdwy, Just North of San jose Ca. Most memorable part was as we sat down in the first row a Big Purple sedan hit the wall head on not 10' in front of us. Sendind dirt and wood splinters all over us, My Introduction to the Mad Man Marshall Sargent. That rack is now gone as are most I ventured out to in Ca.
Some of those there that day were Boots Cantrell, Don Loyd, Dean Holden, George Roggie and many more it seems those old hardtops always had over 30 car fields back then.

Re: Where and when was your very first race?

Very first race: Shangri-la Speedway, Owego NY. The date was most likely Sunday May 1, 1966. I was three months old at the time. My father worked on a modified stock car driven by Don Diffendorf (# S/360) who was the winner that day. The top three finishers were: Diffendorf, Jim Shampine and Billy Blum.

I saw my very first open wheel race (supermodifieds), at a pavement track, Oswego Speedway, Oswego NY some time in 1972. My first open wheel show on dirt was a URC winged sprint race at Weedsport Speedway, Weedsport NY on July 4, 1976. That race won by Randy Wolfe.

Donnie,

I was there that night watching. Your dad had been close to winning several races before that night but I guess he must have been waiting for you. I had gotten to know your grandpa & father pretty well in the years before and I was very happy for them. They were a class act and I know you are proud of them and that they are proud of you.

Vallejo Speedway, Vallejo CA, 1975. I was 11 or 12 at the time, so I can't remember who won, but it probably went something like this:

Supermodifieds: Darrell Dudley
Super stock: Larry Damitz
Hardtops: Lanny Westbrook
Street Stocks: Les Hand
Powder Puff: Donna Smith

Per Superdukes post on the Winchester 1945 Labor Day Race, I was there with my grandfather who was a friend of Mr. Funk. At the age of 14 this was the most exciting day of my life. My recollection of this day was that Bus Wilbert, still in the Navy, won the race. Remember that this was64 years ago. My sprint car driving hero from that day was Elbert 'grandpappy' Booker. In fact my racing heros have been sprint car drivers including Duke Cook. Unfortunately I no longer have the program from that race.

1965 at the mile in Du Quoin. 44 years old and have been to 43 silver crowns at Du Quoin. Went so much when I was a little fella couldn't tell you firsts. I remember going to Turnpike Speedway (Williamson County Speedway) in Marion, Illinois. Weekly coupe track that ran sprint specials. Vividly remember Bubby Jones coming to the track and all the boys from down south. It was a Friday track and the promoter would pause the proceedings to let sprint travelers time as they came to the track. I remember Hooker Hood, a young Ricky Hood, and the Swindell brothers specifically. Other tracks in the area included Frankliln County Fairgrounds Speedway, a track in Murphysboro, Il, and one in Centralia. Also used to go to Belle-Claire every once in a while. To butcher a movie phrase "Nothing is as meaningful or as exiciting as when you were ten years old".
