From and outsider looking in, the AMA do have a good thing, the key for them is the same for everyone else, more butts in the seats. They had more then Springfield did, and there was more fan participation. That participation deal is what needs to take place in open wheel racing. Fan pit walks before the events start, lob a few Tshirts to the crowd, things like that. It doesn't always take money to get people interested, but if you don't do anything, you get nothing in return.

As for purse money, AMA is $7500 to win for 25 miles, at least at Indy. That's not too bad for a race the quarter distance of a champ dirt car race.

I'm a longtime stock car fan who has gotten into midgets and Silver Crown over the past few years so I probably don't have much to add to the discussion. With that being said I do have a question.

Why wouldn't Silver Crown dump the pavement races and run a schedule of ten dirt races? That way you would have consistent entry lists between the owners and drivers.

Additionally the series could be billed as a true dirt national championship. It seems to me that Silver Crown would have a better claim to the title than WoO or any stock car series.

Second, someone needs to run USAC who has got an actual interest in auto racing, it's been a while since they've done that. Yes, racing is a business, but at least respect the business.

USAC executive tried to do something along these lines, they bought a t-shirt gun and some pyro stuff... It came with directions that had to be read, so he put the stuff in the basement, and he went off to Calf. to a truck race!

I wouldn't want to see an all dirt schedule for the Silver Crown series. There are guys that run only the pavement races (Jacob Wilson) and I like the pavement races too. If anything, maybe phase out pavement only or dirt only chassis and phase in a combo chassis that will work on both tracks (it was done before and can be done again) to limit the amount of chassis and engines teams have to have.

The Silver Crown series has the only claim, in my humble opinion, to a national dirt championship. They took over when the Indycars were split off into their own series. USAC was born in 1956 when AAA left after the worst year in racing history. It's a continuation of a series of tracks and races that crowned a champion that was able to be the best on pavement and dirt and should stay that way.
