I watched the stream. The production values were the best I've seen; big-text lineups, updated times, etc. The camera work was as good as USAC's shows last year.
The race itself was not so good. Very little passing. And way too much dust. I'm really going to miss the USAC streams we had last year. I would give Jackslash a try, but I guess he only take money via PayPal, and I don't use that. |

Rossburg, Ohio…….Dave Darland’s assault on the record books will be a year-long theme in 2014, and he visited victory lane for the first time in National competition on the season in the AMSOIL Sprint Car “Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic” Saturday night at Eldora Speedway. For the Lincoln, Indiana native, it was the 48th Sprint Car score of his legendary career, and now the 22nd consecutive year he has won in USAC National competition. That streak breaks a tie with A.J. Foyt & Mel Kenyon for the all-time record.
Chase Stockon led the field to green and distanced himself from fellow front-row starter Dallas Hewitt until lap six, when Hewitt bounced through turn-three and flipped into turn-four. He was unhurt. On the restart, Darland got a big run down the backstretch and slid up in front of Stockon, who bounced a little himself but was able to turn back down the banking and get enough speed to slide past Darland into turn-one. Just a few laps later, Jarett Andretti flipped through turns one and two, again bringing out the red. He was also uninjured. This time, Stockon was better on the restart, but Darland stalked him until lap 12, when he slid low in turn-three just as Stockon bobbled. Darland had the lead and was able to hold off Stockon this time, taking command and racing away from the field. Darland caught traffic in the waning laps but had no challenges from behind, putting his owners Steve & Carla Phillips in Eldora Speedway victory lane for the first time. Darland’s slide-job for the win was good for the “Weld Wheels Move of the Night,” winning by 2.414 seconds in the Racers Advantage Store – Frank Daigh #71P DRC/Foxco. “I’m always excited to win at Eldora. I love it here. To win here, and to get the Phillipses a win here, that’s something to be proud of. I thought we were better than Chase, but I just needed the right opportunity to get him after he passed us back the first time. I wanted to make sure we didn’t get hung out and let Tracy by us, either. Once we got out front, I had in my mind that I got too comfortable a couple years back and Tracy got me on the last lap, so I was running hard all the way to the end,” Darland said. Stockon held on for second, his best Eldora finish in the Superior Tank & Trailer – Crescent Electric Supply #32 DRC/Fisher. “We really want to win here, and I thought we were really close tonight. I was getting higher and trying to run harder, and when we bounced through a hole down there and busted the right-front arm off of it. So, I guess we were pretty fortunate to be able to finish and get a second-place run,” Stockon said. Tracy Hines wound up third in The Carolina Nut Company – Hansen’s Welding #4 DRC/Stanton Chevy. “We were solid all night. It’s good to get another podium finish with the Carolina Nut Company team,” Hines said. Jerry Coons, Jr. finished fourth in the Edison Motorsports – Crume Evans Insurance #10E Spike/Chevy, and Brady Bacon finished fifth after capturing the ProSource “Fast Time Award” in the Hoffman Auto Racing – Mean Green #69 Triple X/Stanton Mopar. Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
It's a newwwwww traaaaaack record.......home from Eldora at 11:43. I don't ever remember doing that before. Then again, there are a lot of things I don't remember at my age. Thoroughly enjoyable evening, made all the better with the Darland win. I think Brenda Darland was sitting a row or two in front of me. I know about 5 of them leaped from their seats when Dave took the lead for good. Wanted to say "Hi" but wasn't sure. No interest in getting my butt kicked by some lookalike's man. She wouldn't know me, of course, from Adam but we share a love for BostonTerriers.
Much appreciate the way the program was run off. Hot laps for all 3 classes, time trials for the sprints, and heats for all classes were run off without unnecessary delay. Must have had 18 or more push trucks which is nice. Good to exchange howdies with a bunch of friends, both in the pits, and in the stands. Feel I need to gripe about something........well, the aroma from the pig farm to the west was intense at times. That's all I've got... :22: |
Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
dust hasn't been a problem? what race were you at? they watered the track , worked the track, watered the track and it still turned to dust, I'd say its time to get rid of the farm dirt and lay down some legitimate sticky-squishy clay that'll hold some water! the racing was fairly good no thanks to the dust bowl, congratulations mr. darland. could not believe it, in fact it made me laugh, the guy behind me booed dave darland:10: AFTER THE RACE WHILE EVERYONE ELSE APPLAUDED. I'VE NEVER HEARD ANYONE BOO DARLAND BEFORE, I FIGURE HE DID IT FOR COMIC RELIEF? I must agree with mr. fishburger, the track was well staffed and ran a smooth professional show, they did all they could with the track surface too, its just beyond help though I'm afraid!

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
There for a while I thought they had the dust monster tamed. Until the feature, when it kind of woke from hibernation and went on a rampage. It wasn't a really good race, after Dave wrestled the lead away from Chase. It's always good to see Darland win, though. First of all, because he's done a lot for racing in our area and he and Phillips deserve good results. And secondly, because since he's so popular, when he wins, the crowd wants to hang around to see him celebrate his victory, so you can get out of the parking lot and down the road with a minimal amount of traffic congestion. Which helps when you have a 200 mile trip home.
I don't usually go to Eldora expecting to see an all out war, like I do at some tracks, but I always have a good time on my 2 or 3 trips there, per year. Watching cars go fast at the big track with good friends is one of the things that always makes it worth the long trip. Jerry |
Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Good experience at Eldora last night, Darland gets the win which its always nice to see a Hoosier get into victory lane.
I was VERY impressed with how the track was ran last night. They were quick with hot laps, qualifying, the heats, track prep. I think thats the earliest I've ever gotten home from Eldora. The track was a dust bowl like others have mentioned in comments above. Not sure what they plan to do but something seriously needs to be done. Last year for both major late model shows (Dream & World 100) you couldnt even see the track from where we sit in the bleachers up at the top of turn 4. However, I will say they did everything they could for the surface last night, it just doesnt hold water like it has in years past. Overall a good evening, good racing, cheap adult beverages like always, and done in a timely manner. Still a great place to go watch a race. |
Stockon lost the right front torsion stop right after that second red he was lucky to finish the race let alone hold onto 2nd. I think the battle for the lead would have been a lot better if not for that.
|
Dust has been a problem at Eldora for many years, why I have no real idea. Last night was actually much better than the norm, in my experience.
I got home at a decent hour, not totally covered with dust and had a little convincing to do that I actually was at Eldora! |
Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Congrats to DD,hats off to the rest of the field.Seen a great race and many friends.Dust is a problem but there wasn't any in the pickles and onions plus they had sauer kraut for the dogs YUMMY

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Gee, I go to dirt tracks all the time and there is dust, dirt does make dust now an then. 10 laps into the feature don't make for a dusty nite. Got out of there and on the road at 9:45, home in Cincy at midnight. :32:

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Sitting here in jaw gaped astonishment as I must agree with thunderhead. New clay (the bright red kind from Georgia) has been needed ever since they applied what appeared to be field dirt from the back forty. Does anyone remember the fiasco a few years back at the USAC opener when they worked the track for six hours then canceled? The track looked gray; like they had put volcano ash on the thing. It has not been right since. Keep the jumbotron and give us a real racetrack with real clay!

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Always great to see DD win. It was dusty but plenty racey. I got home at 11:30; they earliest I made it home from Eldora in a long time. Can't wait for the 4-1 Crowns.
|
$$$$$ for Jumbotrons and Flamethrowers but not the surface.. If the "Greens" ever show up they'll have the place shut down for wasting water. Only go to support the racers. Sad!!!
|
Great night at the big E for me and my girls.
Positives + show ran like clockwork. + a win for DD and the 71 team + heats 1 and 2 were epic. Fantastic battles. Anybody else thinks so? + support classes were entertaining + stocktons move to repass DD after the first restart was very impressive. + it wasn't snowing Negatives - dust during the feature - the concession trailer wasn't setup in turn 1 yet. No tenderloin for me. Looking forward to the BOSS show next month. |

Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
Seems to me that ever since they put up the suites in 3 and 4 the dust has no where to go. If you watch the video 1 and 2 is a lot different than 3 and 4.agreed that the surface needs something, but in my opinion the huge skyscrapers in 3 and 4 have a little something to do with it too. j.m.o. see you at the races. Re: Eldora USAC this Saturday
The other side to this coin is if the track is to heavy, then everyone will complain its one lane around the botyom/middle.
I'll dive into that and a few other reasons why I think the way I do on this weeks show. |
