Re: Gas City
For an opening night under new management I thought everything went pretty well. Sure I would have enjoyed more competitive heats but the semi & the feature were well worth it. The track apparently was to the drivers liking in the feature. I had the finish with Cottle-1st (up from 14th starting position); Stanbrough-2nd (up from 12th starting position); Cockrum-3rd (up from 15th starting position); Darland-4th (up from 19th starting position and Boespfug-5th (up from 8th starting position. Stanbrough and Clauson were battling it out early on and then Stanbrough pulled away to a big lead. The final caution flag came out with 10 to go and it was then Stanbrough and Cottle battling wheel to wheel for a bit, with Cottle eventually pulling out the win.
A shout out also to both Chet Gerhke and Issac Chapple for their midget drives. Chapple won the heat and finished second in the feature while Gerhke finished second in the heat and won the feature. Also a shout out to Rob Goodman and Brett Bowman who are announcing at Gas City. They did an excellent job of getting lineups read prior to cars being on the track. Thank you very much on a job well done. |
Re: Gas City
I agree with mudpacker. Just wish they could have qualified. Really enjoyed the double file restarts even if it did take a couple laps to line em up. The feature was a great one. Too bad Ballou, Leary, Tmez, and the pink 41 left on the hook. Next weeks USAC show ought to be stellar.

Anyone care to share the mod results.

Re: Gas City
Since Monteplier was another washout for tomorrow night I took a break from getting ready to check things out at Gas City. For what it's worth, my thoughts (in no particular order of importance):
From hotlaps through the heats, the track was horrible; given how dusty the track was for hotlaps I was surprised that they only watered down the exit lane before the heats. I actually thought the midgets looked pretty good on the dry-slick; they may have been turning quicker laps that the sprinters at that point in the night. It was a little disappointing to see only 8 midgets turn up. I hope the count improves, but not to the detrement of Montpelier. If Mel decides to let the chain-drives in, that could only help. If I had gotten my trailer registered in time I would've considered taking my car tonight; I'd have gotten a top-ten my first time out! To their credit, the track crew did a great job bringing the surface back from the dead for the Semi and features. I've only been to G.C. a couple of times; it's tough for me to get off work in time most Fridays, but what's all the whining about the stands? Sure, they aren't the most comfortable, but I've seen worse, and there were plenty of decent spots that weren't taped off. I thought Jerry Coons Jr. was going to put it to everybody from the back; he was flying early but faded when the track started to go away, then Stanbrough hit his stride and came to the front as Dave methodically worked his way forward too, but the Throttle had too much for everybody. His car looked like it was jumping out of the corners, he had so much more bite than everybody. Nice job in a new ride. All in all, not a bad first night; not perfect, but there's plenty of nights to get better. |

Granted it was 1st night, I get that n I don't like to talk negative about tracks because we need every single one we have racing to stay racing!!!! But that's a MAJOR problem that needs addressed ASAP!! I've been around enough to know 1 incident like that can ruin you quickly, especially when you got drivers from other tracks there n just not your locals. A Main in sprints was excellent after the lap 15 caution n good before that point. Midget A was alright.

Single-file and hammer-down at the cone is plenty exciting. But that's just one person's opinion, and a minor gripe. Kudos to Mel for his first effort. |
