Wow. That was a wild and crazy finish. Still not quite sure happened with everyone and when but congrats to Urish on the win. Maybe it'll be more clear in the morning. Lol. Food fair coma.

Now that was a lot going on in the last 20 laps. The only thing I'm sure of is Urish won. Great battle between Shane and Bobby during the middle of the race.

DuQuoin, IL (Sept 1, 2013)-Chris Urish missed the season opener of the 2013 USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series due to obligations on his family farm near Elkhart, Illinois and his finishes in the last two series events while respectable would hardly have made him a favorite to win the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin.
Yet that is precisely what the Elkhart native did, taking the lead late in the event as one by one drivers leading the race or running in front of Urish stopped due to mechanical failure or slowed, their engines starving for fuel. Urish motored past them and ended up in victory lane in what was possibly the wildest finish in the history of championship racing at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. Rocklin, California driver Robert Ballou led from opening green flag, waved by the voice of the Southern Illinois University Salukis Mike Reis. An afternoon rain shower gave the "Magic Mile" just the moisture it needed and Ballou rode the cushion for 80 miles and at one time had a 17 second lead on second place Jerry Coons, Jr. Coons attempted to get past Ballou but his Toyota motor gave up with about a third of the event left. Just after lap 80 the hard running took its toll on Ballou's machine and he ran out of fuel and went two laps in arrears. That handed the lead to Canton, Illinois driver Chris Windom, with Benton, Illinois shoe Shane Cockrum in second and Urish riding third. However, Cockrum and Windom both slowed due to fuel issues in the last ten laps handing the lead to Urish who was chased to the checker by Bobby East and A.J. Fike. He becomes the first Illini native winner since Gary B. in 1988, and the first downstate native to win at DuQuoin since Branson in 1965. At one time drivers from the home state were running 1-2-3. As happy as I am for Chris, I feel that bad for Ballou. If you did not see him drive the cushion tonite, you missed one heckuva ride. |

There were times tonight I thought I was at Lincoln Park or Tri State watching Robert ride the cushion. There were slide jobs that I never before noticed at a SC race. It is a hard one to describe if you were not there. Also, I got to sit by 89 year old Paul Collins from Perryville MO. This was his 51st race at DQ. He is a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. WWII. The big war. He said 900 WWII vets die every day. And he has arranged for his ashes to be spread on the Magic Mile when he passes on. It was really touching to see him put his hand on his heart for the National Anthem and raise his hand in recognition of the veterans. What an incredible night. The car count was irrelevant. And Bob Jenkins calling the race. Wow. What a night.

Been to every Silver Crown race at DuQuoin since 1965, and I must say the last twenty laps were some of the craziest I've seen. What a finish! Feel so bad for Robert Ballou, who ran out of fuel after leading the first eighty laps. Running the high groove obviously took more fuel. You don't need thirty cars to have a good race. Remember, in USAC' s glory days of Foyt, Branson, Rutherford, etc., they only started eighteen cars.

Two questions: What penalty is Chris Windom talking about? What happened to Robert Ballou that relegated him from 5th to 15th? I see the USAC write-up shows Ballou in 15th this morning.

Ballou was shown as seventh at the end of the race and was announced as finishing by the PA system . Was then told he was in fifth. And since je was under the impression he was in seventh never went to scale. Usac felt he needed to be disqualified for not going to the scales

Counted 24 in that clip but I've heard storys of some division in USAC at one time taking 18 by time and everyone else went on the trailer. No Last Chance, No LCQs. Also even heard stories of only positions 1-10 getting paid.

Bottom line. We can fondly remember the good old days and wish things were still that way, but we can't turn back the clock. No doubt we all wish there were 30+ SC dirt cars racing 12-15 times a year. We could also spend hours pointing fingers and blaming names why there's not. I don't feel like that's going to change anything for the better.
So all I'm going to say is this: THANK YOU to the drivers, car owners, crews, sponsors, officials, promoters and fans that are keeping this series alive. By all accounts, the racers put on one HECK of a show last night.:6: |

Actually the first consi was ran in 1976 at the Hoosier Hundred. Up until then you had to make it through qualifying. When I think of the glory days, I think of the 50's and 60's. I doubt there was ever that many cars then.

Went to both Springfield and Du Quoin this year. Counted at least 5 cars that ran at Springfield but not at Du Quoin for various reasons mostly motor related would have made at least 20 plus if they could have made it. Not the greatest number but would have looked better. Usac needs to figure out what to do to get more cars be it more races, money, etc. Maybe same day double headers with the Usac sprint cars.

Made my 37th straight trip to DuQuoin for labor day weekend.... nothing like it, love it... especially when they are running a cushion like they did all night long this past Sunday night. But guys, starting 14 cars? This is starting to get kind of serious if you ask me. I hope someone figures this deal out

I have been going to the Magic Mile for many years now and I can truthfully say that was the strangest finish I have ever seen. With a shower late in the afternoon helping Sarge with track prep, the heavy track had a cushion develop and Ballou was running it with abandon. Unfortunately for him, the fuel didn't last long enough. Windom and Cockrum also were bitten it seems by fuel issues as well.
One thing I haven't seen posted and would like to know is this. What fuels were Ballou, Windom, Cockrum and Urish running? Ethanol or Methanol? Did this have anything to do with the outcome? Better fuel mileage maybe? Though the car count wasn't what everyone wanted, it was a night for sure to remember. It has been a while since a cushion developed and it was exciting to watch Ballou and others attack it. Also nice to see more than one groove of racing. The battle between East and Cockrum was also enjoyable. They provided the show when Ballou was trying to run away and hide. Always great to see the Silver Crown cars under the lights at DuQuoin. Also glad to see the State of Illinois cut the infield for this years race. Just a real nice setting to watch a race. It would be a great venue to have more racing. AMA I believe used to run there for a short period of time. I would like to see them return if possible. |

What bit Shane was a 65 gallon cell... A 75 gallon tank will not fit on the Smaller bodied Beast like the 15 and the 55 compared to the mid bodied cars like RW and RFMS...

We've been camping at the Du Quoin State Fair and going to the Ted Horn Memorial on The Magic Mile since 1994 except for the rainouts that didn't get rescheduled. But the one rainout that did get rescheduled we didn't go back for since at that time we were still going to the World 100 and had to make a choice since the Du Quoin rainout was run the same weekend as the World.
Still kick myself for going to the World that time since that race was a real yawner (over half of the World 100's we went to were also yawners) and we again had the pleasure of enduring the 15,000 belligerent drunken idiots. Also, I could have easily sold my World tickets for face price. That year Rich Tobias won his only Silver Crown race and that race was described as one of "the best Silver Crown races ever run". I will forever mourn my decision not to go back to Du Quoin that year. This year's Horn Memorial had some major shortcomings in regards to participants but Robert Ballou was breathtaking and it was as crazy a race as I've ever seen. |

Don't know about a tumble at Springfield, but Richie's car definitely had a unique appearance. It certainly wouldn't win any beauty contests, but it was fast on that particular night at DuQuoin. He started last in the consi because he didn't have a qualifying time, won it, started last in the feature and won it. That race was run on a Saturday night, a rain date, and was the best race I have seen at DuQuoin. It was the first run under the lights. Tyler Walker set a record in qualifying, which still stands. Sounded like he never lifted at all on that lap.

Just a few clarifications
I believe Tobias used a lot of eastern modified designs when he built that car that barrel rolled into turn 1 at Springfield in 2003. IIRC, they had a sprint car a the shop that was built similar for the Eldora event, and took it and stretched it into a dirt car. It's true Rich never had a qualifying time at DuQuoin in 2003 and did start last (13th) in the semi, he did not win it, he finished 5th as Kevin Huntley won it in the SC 97. He did not start last in the Ted Horn 100, he started 25th and took the lead from JJ Yeley on lap 76. Walker did not set a track recod in 2003, that was set by Teddy Beach. Beach was the 30th scheduled qualifier and his time of 29.947 was (at that time) a world record. Walker set the existing track record the next year. |

The car Richie won DuQuoin with was the sprinter. Richie told me he made a sprint car with the longest wheel base allowed. He also made it so he could move the front axle even further forward for a champ dirt car. It worked, he won. It was a short wheel base East Coast mod. Wide 5's and all. It was ugly , but fast. Saw him go to the tail of the Hoosier Hundred one year, and by lap 53 or so was leading.Then the power steering broke.
Also remember this, DuQuoin is a mile from the INSIDE guardrail. When your running the cushion hammer down, it's a lot longer then a mile out there. |
