I called Dan (of the Hoffman team) and from the time he actually walked off, to the time I saw him walk off, about a minute had elapsed. That's a serious delay. Doesn't mean anything, just took me by surprise is all.

Re: Gas City updates

Hockett would have had it, if it wasnt for the lap cars blocking the entire track. Good Job to DD for finding a way to get around them. Hockett said during the post race interviews that he had a steel block 360 in there cause he blew the 410 up at eldora. Just goes to show that sometimes Horsepower isnt everything.

hoosierfan 4/18/09 1:17 AM

Re: Gas City updates

Congrats Dave what a race!!!! Not a bad run for Hockett in the 360 purely amazing. Definately worth the wait in track prep

Re: Gas City updates

I won't go so far as to say Jesse would have definitely won, had the #68 of Hendrick gotten out of the way. But, I really wish he would have made room for the leaders so we could have more than likely seen a classic finish. Bottom line is DD had to (and did) get around the #68, also. It was a great race, none the less. From Clauson gassing it up and really letting it hang out there, on the top side, early, to the way Jesse was just slamming it into 1 and 3 (Bob Kinser-like, I must say) to take control of the race, to the way Levi charged up through the field, to the way DD surgically knifed his way through the lead group to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, I'd say the racers and track crew did a complete reversal from what the program was like up till the heats were over. Great track surface recovery and an even greater race!!

Re: Gas City updates

Reworking the track was worth the wait for them to do so. Quals and heats were some of the worst I have seen there. The B and the A were both great. Props for the track rework. I know lappers are part of the deal and can't just pull over, but damn....get out of the way. Hockett couldn't get around because he wouldn't pick a lane. That was my issue with it. If you're slower, fine, but pick a lane. Darland used all of his years of knowledge...great run. Not sure there is a better one out there in traffic. :respect:

Onlydirt 4/18/09 11:10 AM

Re: Gas City updates

Shaw and KT nailed it! Great racing once the track was reworked for the B and A. B was super tacky and so fast, A was a great race no matter where you were watching in the pack of cars. I thought Hockett had a win until DD started luirking then stalking and finally slicing through traffic. Hocketts 360 must be one hell of a 360! He was flying around there. Clauson had the save of the ight, I thought he was gonna take a bad one, but some how got it stopped before it lifted off.

Nice to hang out at Aero's RV with the gang!

Re: Gas City updates

A couple thoughts on Shaw's, KT's and Onlydirt's posts, and last night's feature in general.....

Are you guys forgetting that sprint cars don't have mirrors? The flagman can show the layover flag all he wants, but the bottom line is that Hendrick is out there racing too and can't commit to anything until he hears what he thinks is the leader behind him consistently. And it's not like he's some green rookie, he's got a lot of experience in micros and midgets. I didn't think he did anything that far out of line at all.

Lapped cars are part of the deal, especially when you start 24 cars on a track the size of Gas City. And it's better to be running second when you catch up to a gaggle of backmarkers in the waning laps, as opposed to leading.

I like Dave Darland, admire his talent and longevity and think he's one of the best and cleanest drivers of my generation. But he wasn't catching Hockett without lapped traffic interfering last night. Not a chance.

Clauson was over his head for two or three laps before he stepped on it. It was clear that something was coming, and it's a good thing he somehow saved it because that was going to get really ugly, really fast.

The delays were pretty excessive and I'm sure USAC cringed at having that much down time, but I've got to say I was impressed with the reworking prior to the B. The racing after that point was well worth the wait. I was certain that the racing surface was beyond retrieval after the heats, but the Gas City crew did a great job to build a racy track out of nothing. Well, except for that crater in one, but that's just part of the deal.
