Look's like Newman's dad didn't benefit much from his sons education.:kookoo
I wonder if Ryan shares his fathers sentiments, or if he is embarrassed by them?

Ryan's dad seems to think it is something 'new' that his son was pursuing a career while attending college. Granted, his career choice was very different than most. But, how would it be fair for Ryan to be given breaks while students who are working their way through school have to make hard choices on how many hours they can handle while making the check book balance?

Maybe he will take the money instead and form or help a lower funded USAC team or better yet, Make a larger donation than he already does to the Rich Vogler Scolarship fund.:)

OK I need to correct some things about being a "student athlete". First off NCAA is not the end all be all of college sports. While most college sports hold a NCAA sanction not all of them do so. The ones that do not have an NCAA Sanction are subject to what ever the sanction says.

College Rodeo Athletes are awarded scolarships from the school and are considered College Athletes however they are under the sanction if the National Intercollegate Rodeo Association (NIRA). Under the NIRA sanction athletes do collect winnings when competing in college rodeo events and are also allowed to compete in a limited number of "Pro" events a year where they can also collect winnings. A couple years ago there was a athlete that made the PRCA National Finals Rodeo "Pro" then hte next year decided to go back to school and made the college National Finals Rodeo. NCAA currently does not sanction Rodeo and the schools competing have other sports that hold an NCAA sanction.

The same is also found with "Club" sports in most cases these are considered the JV team if the school has a "Varsity" team however many schools have only the club team and no varsity team this is the case with IU and Prudue in Ice Hockey. NCAA does not sanction "club" sports and they are not subject to Title 9 but their athletes are considered student athletes. The American College Hockey Association (ACHA) sanctions club college hockey in America the teams are bound by their rules not NCAA. Most club teams have rigorus travel schedules and are required to miss class. Their classifaction as a student athlete helps them with this.

The school could have classified him a student athlete with out violating NCAA regulations because he was not competing in an NCAA sanctioned event.

Now they could of the question is should the of?

Well for what its worth I was attending Colorado State University when the opportunity of a lifetime dropped in my lap in the form of the Knoxville Nationals Fast Track to Indy program. The rookie orientation test was scheduled to take place monday following the IRL race at chicago in '05 which was during the month of september.

I notified the dean of the school I was enrolled in and offered to include CSU in all of the media stuff that Knoxville and the IRL had lined up. CSU had been in the local and national news for a series of drinking related accidents, as well as a football recruiting screw up in the wake of the CU Barnett explosion. Needless to say I proposed it could be good media coverage (although not on a super huge scale) and all I asked in return was for the school to require teachers to work with my schedule.

I had 4 exams scheduled during the period I was to be in Chicago for the test. I was flatly refused. The school told me I could ask each professor individually to work with the schedule but they would do nothing to require flexibility. (which they do support for club sports as well as varsity sports).

After speaking with my professors, providing clippings one of which had the date of the test printed, and a letter from both knoxville and the IRL two of them stated they would not work with me. I had to drop the two classes. Needless to say I left CSU. IUPUI on the other hand has been very supportive and I havent even had to go to the top to get support.

So I guess you could say if the Newmans were not happy about the situation they could have gone elsewhere, but the school could have probably helped out a little bit. I know FSU worked with Chris Festa when it came to allowing room for studies and school. Just my experience

While attending Purdue in 1995, I took a week off to race my brothers car in Florida and had the full support of my professors. I get frequent requests for contributions. I would love to donate for a motorsports building, but my lovely wife insists that I spend my(our) millions on our local sprint car operation. I am guessing that Purdue and Newman will make it allright without each others money.
