The drivers in the UAW American Made Mel Kenyon Midget Series all had something in common when the racing started at Limaland Motorsports Park on Friday night – none of them had ever turned a lap at the Northwestern Ohio dirt track before hot laps. Clayton Gaines learned quickly and picked up the second dirt win of his career.
Ryan Huggler jumped to the lead from the pole position until the race was briefly halted by a red flag on lap 2 for Kyle O’Gara. O’Gara got bumped and ended up on his side on the back straight. On the single file restart Huggler again jumped to the lad with Gaines hot on his tail. Gaines made the pass for the point on lap three with Huggler battling back in side by side racing until Gaines pulled out to a two-car advantage on lap six. Gaines would not be challenged again in the 20-lap feature. Behind Gaines the racing was close and hard. 2016 Simpson World Rookie of the Year Chase Jones began carving his way through the file from the 9th starting spot. With the race winding down Jones was in a position to make several runs at Gaines for the win. Jones last attempt came on the last lap in turn three. Jones lost the handle allowing Gaines a free run to the checkers. Jones would wind up third behind point leader Dameron Taylor. Kent Kriegbaum finished fourth with the early leader Huggler coming home in fifth |
