My friend Dan Spence from Mobile, Alabama sent me a package of vintage photo prints in 2006. The photos were published in a local racing paper covering the 'World 300' for supermodifieds at Mobile International Raceway in Mobile, Alabama during the years 1966 -1968. One of those drivers was Casey Jones from Indiana. :Steer

Thanks Rich, another great photo, seeing all of your old photos shines a light on the evolution of the supermodified over the past 40 years. The invasion of the midwest supermodifieds in the 60's brought the winged vs non-winged era to Oswego, then came the banning of the rear engine car and most recently the banning of the indepenent front end suspension car. This past winter I had a hard time understanding why Oswego would ban the IFS cars, they on average were drawing 18 supers a night in 2007, the lowest car count I had ever seen at Oswego. With this latest banning Oswego's opening night of the 2008 season saw 11 supermodifieds race in the feature, the lowest showing I had ever seen at Oswego. By mid-season Oswego was again drawing 18 supermodifieds, anticipation started circulating that there would not be enough supermodifieds to fill the 34 starting spots in this years running of the International Classic. With Classic weekend here, last nights winged race was won by Chris Perley, Timmy J. 2nd, and D. J. Shullick Jr. 3rd. Two more days an we will know what part this years Classic will play in the history of the supermodified and where the cars will evolve to from here. Paul Colloca and Doug Didero are feverishly working to complete the newest extreme chassis and Greg Furlong should have the newest Hawksby car ready to go.
Safe racing, Patti |
