When the checkered flag dropped on the Mel Kenyon Midget Series 50-lap Bob Carey Memorial race at Anderson Speedway Saturday night, Kyle O’Gara had nipped Dameron Taylor by just 0.004 of a second – or too close for the naked eye to call.

Taylor grabbed the lead from the early leader and recipient of the inaugural Bob Carey Award Trey Osborne on lap seven and began to stretch out a comfortable margin on the rest of the field. O’Gara started the race in the third row and began his battle to the front.

“Starting in the third row, I knew it would be tough because it’s so hard to pass here,” O’Gara commented from victory lane. A caution on lap 21 eroded Taylor’s lead with O’Gara restarting in the 4th spot. O’Gara disposed of Clayton Gaines and Osborne by lap 30 and set off in pursuit of Taylor who had once again separated himself from the field.

As the cliché goes, it’s easy to catch them and hard to pass. O’Gara relentlessly ran down Taylor catching him on lap 45. The two drivers then engaged in a driving demonstration they will talk about at Anderson for years. Taylor parried every thrust from O’Gara, including an attempt at using the apron in turn two.

Taylor slipped a fraction entering turns three and four coming to the checkers allowing O’Gara to come alongside. The result, O’Gara grabbed the win by that skinny margin of 0.004.
