Belle-Clair Full of Comebacks for Gage Walker
By Jessica Jenkins Gearing up for another POWRi weekend with two events to run in Illinois on Saturday and Sunday, the first night was once again washed away by rain. Unable to make his first start at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway, Gage Walker took off for the second planned race of the weekend at Belle-Clair Speedway. When the on track competition started, Walker was lined up on the pole of the third heat, once again in the same group as two of the night’s headlining names. He finished second with a car he described as being “hooked up and really good the whole race.” Speaking more about the race, Walker explained, “I drew a low number and had to start on the pole with Chris Bell right next to me and Darren Hagen behind me, which doesn't give me a chance to get any passing points. Bell got the jump on me and I ran in second the rest of the race.” Though he was put at a disadvantage with starting on the pole of his heat, Walker still earned enough points to transfer straight into the Feature, skipping the Semi entirely. Rolling off on the inside of row six, the 17 year old immediately began moving up and achieved a top seven running position by the twelfth lap. That’s when things began to stop going quite so smoothly. Racing side-by-side in a riveting four lap battle with one of his competitors, he was clipped from behind and turned around. With a fire lit under him, Walker began his march back up through the field before another competitor stopped ahead of him, leaving him nowhere to go but into the back of the driver’s car. However, there was no damage and he pushed back off, gaining a couple spots by the finish before winding up 14th when it was all said and done. After the race Walker stated, “I feel like we had a really good car all night long and I was able to move forward and make some good clean passes before going to the back. Thanks to all my sponsors: Spike Chassis, Impact, Walker & Sons, Wilwood Brakes and Business Art Designs. Also thanks to my parents for everything they do to make it possible for me to do this every weekend, as well as Jessica Jenkins and Karin Silver for all the work put into keeping my media up to date!” After taking a weekend off, the Indiana native will be taking his red #7x to Montpelier Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 25.
