Ronnie Combs Wins MTQRL Season Opener at Shelbyville

The Midwest TQ Racing League presented by Jenmarco.com opened its 2015 season on Saturday night at the Shelby County Fairgrounds with eighteen three-quarter midgets on hand to compete on the quarter mile Shelbyville, Ind. dirt oval.

Defending MTQRL champion Cody Kiewitt led the field to the green flag with Ronnie Combs getting by outside front row starter Jon Steed to move into second place. Kiewitt was having trouble keeping his car on the bottom, allowing Combs to dive under him in turn one on lap four and take the lead. Rick Robinson then used the same move to pass Kiewitt three laps later.

After the caution waived on lap thirteen for Brandon Watson, Combs continued to lead over Robinson, Matt Arrington, Callie Wolsiffer and Brayton Leisure.

Aaron Percell, who almost spun at the start of the race after going up and over the berm in turns one and two, was working his way through the field. With just two laps remaining Percell got by Leisure for fifth place.

Combs, driving the #14S Tony Stewart Racing / Acro Racing / Adams Engines / Tony Stewart Foundation / Asher Pallets / Jen Mascaro / Slinkard Racing Beast Kawasaki, led the final seventeen laps to score his 12th MTQRL feature win.

Point leader Robinson came home second followed by Arrington, Wolsiffer and Percell. Leisure, Steed, Kyle May, Jamie Ross and Watson rounded out the top ten.

The Watson Racing Quick Time Award went to Percell with a lap of 17.981 seconds in qualifications. Robinson won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel, and Perfect North Slopes heat winners were Arrington, Percell and Robinson.

Wolsiffer was the highest finishing of the four rookies and was named the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race. Robinson was the Steed Motorsports Hard Charger and the Duane & Sonja Hard Luck Award went to Dustin Wheeldon after he spun into the wall and damaged his rear end.

The next event on the MTQRL schedule will be May 30th at the Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Ind.
