According to my calculations, Levi averaged 104.87 mph last night in setting the track record. Using Jon Stanbrough's practice time that jumps to the speed to 105.87.
Contrast that to Eldora with a track record of 14.712 and an average speed of 122.35 mph. These calculations were made using Dave Rudisell's stated distance of 1986 feet for the Burg and Eldora's stated length of 1/2 mile. Averaging 100+ mph on a 3/8 mile track is hauling the mail!!! Rob Hoffman |

Not starting anything, but isnt Eldora a small 1/2 so the speeds there are understated...
I still think Lburg is a fast joint!! |

There are alot of tracks that claim to be a 1/2 mile. The only thing I'm gonna say is if eldora is a small half mile, there are ALOT of 3/8th "half miles".

I think you mean the speeds at Eldora are overstated. I believe Eldora is something like .44 miles.

The track record speed is held by Craig Dollansky and I believe it was a average over 140mph. Correct me if I am wrong please.

The discrepancy in the speed...
Why the speeds seem so slow .. I am not good at math ... but.. the track is measured 10 feet off the wall . with the turn area being so wide... most of the qualifying is inside of the 3/8 mile length. the timed speed is being applied to 3/8 mile -- but, in reality they went a shorter distance.. wouldn't this mean that the cars are going a lot faster than calculated? someone needs to figure the "average line" that is used in qualifying --- and use that distance in the speed calculation -- might find that , yes, the track is a lot faster than the speed calculation shows right now. |

If a racetrack is measured around the middle at a given distance, say 3/8, but the cars run around the bottom (a shorter distance, like you said), then the the distance vs. time elapsed formula is going to spit out a mph number that is too high. Conversely, if the cars were to run around the top, the mph figure would be too low.
You can look at Eldora as a perfect example of the misleading mph numbers. They list it as a half mile, yet we know it's somewhere around 7/16 (.4375). So in reality the cars are traveling a shorter distance than listed. Jerry Coons Jr. clocked the non-wing track record lap of 14.712 in 2006. Put up against the listed distance of 1/2 mile, his speed is 122.348 mph. But, if we use the real (shorter) distance he traveled (.438, let's call it), his speed was actually 107.177 mph. Obviously we don't know where every race track was measured, be it on the inside, in the middle or 10 feet off the wall. And we also don't know if the measurements are accurate (Eldora). I'd say the best way to get a true feel for speed is to ask your promoter or owner what and where the measurement is, and go from there. PS - The formula for finding speed is easy. First take the seconds elapsed and divide it by 3600 (this converts the number to hours). Then, divide that number into the distance in miles. It's easy. |

not enough difference between .44 and 7/16 (.4375) to even argue about. :headbang:moon::headbang It is slightly shorter than a true 1/2 mile depending on where it gets measured! |
