No surprise in my opinion, anyone could see it coming for quite a few years, unless you were wearing blinders and didn't want to see it.

I disagree. I've attended WoO sprint and late model shows this year as well as DIRT big block mods and all of the shows have been excellent. They are well run, they were well announced, and, most importantly, the racing was great (oh, and the crowd count was pretty damn good too).
Given the increased cost of running a slew of touring series, I think they've held up quite well. If you take the time to review the financial data in the WSJ link provided, you will see that their EBIT is improving and their total revenue has improved. The bad news is that the COS also increased. The only curious thing I noticed is that in the Profile, their industry is classified as GAMBLING instead of entertainment or sports venture. WRG finally has some decent leadership and I think they'll be around for a while. Don't see anyone else coming in to do what they do. Their product is still very popular with most fans. For the price of a hotel room in the Cincy area, I could buy a couple thousand shares. Might be a decent bet. Get in now while it's "dirt" cheap. |

In my opinion(Which is worth about as much as their stock price); the sport needs the WoO and it needs it to be successful. If it fails, USAC will not be the benefactor, no one will. Sure some guys will run with the All Stars and most will go back to their areas, but the sponsors that pay the tab for things like T.V. will be scared off.
Like it or not, it takes big money to rock and roll down the road and put these shows on. It needs corporate America(or Japan) to help pick up the costs. As a driver/owner, I would want their shows to have a high payout because that raises the level for all sprint shows. If they are a diminished product, then the sport as a whole is diminished. I'm not sure why it would be listed as gambling(Unless they are looking at it from the promotors side of things), but gambling is taking a beating as an entire sector. |
