For Immediate Release DAMION GARDNER – THE WORLD’S FASTEST SPRINT CAR DRIVER! (Concord, CA, August 16, 2013) Damion Gardner’s resume is swarming with main event wins and titles including the 2005 USAC/CRA championship and two Oval Nationals victories. Tonight, as he drives from the Bonneville Salt Flats to Southern California for Saturday’s USAC/CRA race at Perris Auto Speedway, he can bask in the glory of a brand new addition to that resume. Gardner is “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car Driver.” The week at Bonneville was satisfying and exasperating at the same time. Gardner is delighted with his new label and with the knowledge that his Go Rhino! “Green Demon” car can be referred to as “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car.” However, there is some frustration that they came so close to 200 MPH with a fast pass at 194.27. Gardner’s final attempt on Friday morning ended with a spin on the slippery salt surface. “Two-hundred was a nice round number,” Gardner said as he passed by Las Vegas on the way to Perris. “That is what we went there shooting for, but we didn’t get it. It leaves something for us to shoot for, for next year. We definitely learned a lot this week.” He looks forwards to getting a full year to get the car ready this time. “We really did not get started (putting the car together) until, I don’t know, maybe two months ago,” he said. “It was a lot of work in a short amount of time. It was definitely full steam ahead working on it.” The wiry driver continued about the time and sacrifices. “I don’t think I have been home for more than a week in two months,” he laughed. “I have been down in Ventura putting the car together. It has been a lot of late nights. My guys from up north came down and helped and we got it done. So, it will not be like that (getting the car ready for 2014), but you know racing. There is always a lot of late nights.” It was an electrifying week and a new adventure watching Gardner and the Go Rhino! “Green Demon.” If you thought this effort was a good one, wait until 2014. As Mike Grosswendt said on Friday, “We have only begun to fight. We are already plotting our revenge.” To see a Loudpedal Productions video on “The World’s Fastest Sprint Car,” at Bonneville please click on or paste the following link into your browser: Go Rhino! is a valued partner in this exciting project. Does anyone remember in the 2000s (2004?) they tested a pavement Silver Crown car (not the "safety crown") on a superspeedway and found that at extreme speeds the rear wheels got very "light" from some sort of aero lift? Wondered if DG was having the same problem.
I know I remember someone telling me that story way back when. |

"At Nashville Super Speedway, Jerry Coons Jr. established new one-lap track and speed records, becoming the fastest person to drive a USAC Silver Crown car, in 2001. Coons officially averaged 149.600 mph or 31.29 seconds per lap during testing. On-board CDS recorded data showed Coons and the No. 35 R.E. Technologies Racing Silver Crown car reached speeds over 176 mph while making the circuit in 30.9 seconds and averaging 154.95 mph." |

That's typical of the tires they run on the salt. Contact area = drag, so you minimize the contact area as much as possible and still retain control. In visiting with competitors when I was there for Speed Week 2011, as well as with a local acquaintence running a modified roadster, the trick is to add weight to the car. Obviously, there's a point of diminishing returns when you start adding weight, but the more weight you can effectively carry, the more stable the car will be, provided the aerodynamics and structure are correct. I'm sure that's a gross over-simplification, but I think that's part of the equation for running fast (safely) on the salt. Others on here who are more knowledgeable than me, feel free to chime in.
