I'm going to do it, sprint for the street

Some of my earliest memories were from dirt tracks all over the country and after going to The Kings Royal a few weeks back I have to make a sprint car. I would love to go racing but I travel a lot for work, have kids, all of that good stuff.
I'm in Indiana so I shouldn't have too many issues with the DMV. My dad knows someone in Kokomo who build one for the street as well. I have to start somewhere so I'm starting with the frame. There are several manufactures and after reading for classified section I have a few questions about 86/40, wide body and so on. What exactly is a 86/40, wide body and so on. Any recommendations on what frame will be easiest to work with. My only real requirement is I want to build a winged sprint (they are the greatest looking race car this side of Europe). The only part I see as being an issue is the massive offset of the rear wheel you guys run. Please no hate messages. I like winter garage projects and the projects allow me to teach my boys about racing, engineering and electronics. |

The offsets are all adjustable with spacers and different wheel offsets. The difference in tire size can be solved by just running two of the same size tires on the back.
Your main issue will be with the driveline. You obviously can't push start the car so you will need a different driveline that allows the use of a starter. Posted via Mobile Device |

I think it'd be cool to build a silver crown car for the street. It would also allow several more inches for a clutch since they already have one along with a trans. If you go with a sprint the 86" is the wheelbase. The 40" is the motor setback, measured from the rear axle to motor plate. So a 41" would give you another inch for extra room but are hard to find. I would guess that an 88-90 car would probably be more suited for a street car. To my knowledge the wide body cars are a pavement thing which would also help you out since the shock mounts are typically extended out from the chassis further. You can find big offset wheels like an 18/7 to help with tucking the tires in but still give you the big tire look and not stand the tire way up by using a 16" wheel. I'm curious to how guys overcome lots of things to put one on the street and make them easy to drive, like bump steer with the front end geometry and fitting a trans in there plus the crown car hand clutch.

I'd use a champ dirt car. Longer wheelbase and larger cockpit. I wouldn't mess with a clutch either, I'd run a powerglide.
If you do this with a sprinter, I'd run a hot V-6, with the missing cylinders , this also gives you more room. With the light weight, even with a V-6, done right it would be fast on the street. |

Lets not forget about the 2 seater sprint cars that are floating around as an option also. Then you have room for a passenger, or a suitcase for road trips.

If I was to build a street sprint car I would use a wide frame pavement coil over chassis. All the pavement chassis I've built have a 45" engine location to the center of the rear axle and the chassis are 4" wider than a standard dirt chassis.
