Altig scores first Angell Park Win
By Bryan Gapinski Sun Prairie, Wis., June 29---Gary "Bubba" Altig rebounded from a few tough weeks of racing to capture the 30-lap Badger Midget Series feature victory at Angell Park Speedway on Sunday Night. It was the second career midget feature victory for the Mechanicsburg, Ill. driver. Polesitter Aaron Fiscus paced the initial two laps, before Brandon Waelti took over the top position. Davey Ray passed Waelti for the lead on the lap 6, one lap later the caution appeared for a stalled car. On the restart Altig moved into second place and one lap later passed Ray for the lead. Altig increased his lead each lap, and began lapping slower cars, two laps before the midway point. Fast qualifier Michael Pickens moved into second place on lap 18, and began cutting into Altig's straightaway lead. Pickens and a lapped car made contact on lap 22, causing Pickens to spin. Dan Mecum, Altig's car owner driving the second team car made contact with Pickens stopped car, and flipped, escaping injury. On the restart, Altig had two lapped cars between himself and second place Brandon Waelti. Altig quickly moved away from Waelti and finished 2.23 second ahead of Waelti, driving the Mecum High Performance Auto Auctions sponsored Stealth/Fontana #67. Completing the top five were: Scott Hatton, Mike Hess and Ray. Pickens who restarted last with eight laps remaining, finished in sixth place. Hess regained the series points lead and now leads Jerry Coons Jr., by two points heading into the July 6 event at Angell Park. SUMMARY 30-lap Feature: 1.Gary Altig; 2. Brandon Waelti; 3.
