+This being the time of the year for indoor midget racing, I thought I'd bring back this one from almost 46 years ago:
Time Trials - 30 cars 14 Bob Richards....................7.88 29 Don Vogler.......................7.24 -7 Jim Hines.........................7.14 Quick Time and New Track Record 17 Billy Harter......................8.37 11 Bob McLean.....................7.89 -4 Tom Bigelow....................7.55 -8 Bob Hare.........................7.69 -7 Gary Byers.......................8.20 20 Mike Quirk.......................7.95 55 Fred Hight.......................8.60 29 Dick Pole.........................8.45 53 Ron Clemens....................9.03 -3 Ray Elliott........................7.67 55 Buzz Gregory....................8.00 47 Jim Graybeal....................7.77 63 Rick Davidson...................9.28 15 Bob Hauck........................7.34 -2 Bill Kollman......................7.59 -5 Bill Clemens......................8.27 -4 Ted Hartley.......................7.41 95 Sonny Ates.......................7.83 54 Gary Bettenhausen............7.85 10 Tom Ward........................8.08 -4 Jim Blount........................8.31 96 Henry Pens.......................8.07 16 Les Scott.........................7.68 61 Mel Kenyon......................7.67 37 Billy Mehner.....................7.90 -5 Tom Sellberg....................DNQ 76 Dan Dunsworth.................DNQ Note: The one lap track record was broken 5 times on this afternoon, on both laps by Jim Hines. I don't know what it had been previously. Consolation Race 15 Laps 63 Rick Davidson......................6 55 Fred Hight...........................1 17 Bill Harter...........................8 -5 Ron Clemens.......................7 53 Bill Clemens........................4 29 Dick Pole............................5 -4 Jim Blount...........................2 -7 Gary Byers..........................3 First Heat - 15 Laps -7 Gary Byers..........................6 20 Mike Quirk..........................3 95 Sonny Ates.........................4 16 Les Scott............................2 -4 Tom Bigelow........................5 -7 Jim Hines............................1 Second Heat - 15 Laps -5 Bill Clemens........................4 55 Buzz Gregory.......................3 14 Bob Richards.......................5 -8 Bob Hare.............................6 61 Mel Kenyon.........................1 29 Don Vogler..........................2 Third Heat - 15 Laps -4 Jim Blount...........................2 96 Henry Pens..........................4 11 Bob McLean.........................1 47 Jim Graybeal........................5 -2 Bill Kollman.........................3 15 Bob Hauck...........................6 Fourth Heat - 15 Laps 17 Bill Harter...........................6 10 Tom Ward...........................5 37 Billy Mehner........................3 54 Gary Bettenhausen...............4 -3 Ray Elliott...........................2 -4 Ted Hartley.........................1 Feature - 50 Laps -8 Bob Hare.................The Winner 16 Les Scott............................5 -3 Ray Elliott...........................8 -2 Bill Kollman........................10 61 Mel Kenyon.........................4 -4 Tom Bigelow........................6 -4 Ted Hartley..........................3 15 Bob Hauck...........................9 29 Don Vogler..........................2 -7 Jim Hines............................7 +Attended several of these Cincinnati Gardens shows in the 60's. The highlight for me was getting to meet one of my heros, Bobby Grim, at one of them. Talked and had a cup of coffee and a smoke together at the concession stand. +Total purse for this event was $1520. +Mostly Offy 110's that day including the feature winner piloted by Hare. Only exceptions were Fords run by Vogler, Kollman, Elliott, Gregory, Ward, Blount, and R. Clemens and Chevys for Hauck, Bigelow, Mehner, Pens, B. Clemens, and Pole. +Henry Pens had won the first indoor feature that season at Ft. Wayne on 1/8/67. Mel Kenyon won the next Cincy Gardens feature on 2/12/67. +At some of these events they also had TQ Midgets, Karts, and something called a Gymkhana. Being a big time baseball fan, I especially remember a TQ fielded by Cleveland Indians fine pitcher, Mike Garcia. +Have a GREAT weekend folks. ![]() |

How was the layout of the place as Cincinnat Gardens lower sections had access unless blocked off, to the arena and you would have to go upstairs to come down????
Chuck, who can vaguely remember going to some circus' and stuff prior to the Colosseum.

I can't remember if I went to this one but I did go to the next one. I still have the Mel Kenyon hero card from that race.
I remember for a couple years Ray Elliott coming out of the indoor events with the USAC midget point lead, a lead that would quickly disappear once the midgets went outdoor racing. |

I believe Jim was wheeling the Richard Hoffman wrenched #7 HAR midget that day. I've seen a photo of them taken after setting the new track record at the Cincinnati Gardens.

My dad and I went to all of them! One I remember was a day when the Hartley's were there. One of them had a chain-drive motorcycle powered car (JAP???) and won. I can't remember if it was Ted or Gene (pretty sure the old man won).

Just noticed a Jim Graybeal in #47......when I had Lawrenceburg Speedway back in the early 80's, Bernie Graybeal drove Butch Smith's #47 from Frankfort KY but, Butch didn't seem old enough back then to be a car owner in the 60's. Anyone know the history there??
