(Perris, CA, August 27) Tickets for the 72nd running of Midget racing's longest running and most prestigious race, the Turkey Night Grand Prix for the Mopar USAC National and Western Midgets, went on sale early this morning. After 13 seasons of racing on pavement, the celebrated race will be making its long awaited return to the dirt at Perris Auto Speedway on Thanksgiving night, November 22nd. Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian and J.C. Agajanian Jr. made the popular announcement that the race was coming back to The PAS on August 18th. Since the announcement, there has a been a positive buzz throughout the racing world. "It has been crazy around here," Kazarian said. "The phones have not stopped ringing and our E-mail has been on fire with fans wanting to get tickets. They officially went on sale this morning." Fans who would like to purchase tickets in advance can do so online from Tix at the following link: http://pas.tix.com/Schedule.aspx?OrgNum=7. They can also order over the phone by calling: 1-800-595-4849. "Ticket are selling at a brisk pace already," Kazarian said early this afternoon. "We expect tickets to continue to sell fast so we are urging fans not to wait until the last minute to order and then have to stand in a long line on the night of the race." The Turkey Night Grand Prix was first contested in 1934 when Bob Swanson won at Gilmore Stadium (now the site of CBS Studios in Hollywood, California). Since then many of racing's biggest names have competed in and won Midget racing's pre-eminent event including Bill Vukovich (1948), Tony Bettenhausen (1959), A.J. Foyt (1960 & 1961), Parnelli Jones (1964 & 1966), Gary Bettenhausen (1967 & 1969) and Tony Stewart (2000). Mesa, Arizona's Ron Shuman sits on top of the Turkey Night Grand Prix all-time winners list with eight triumphs including an incredible four in a row at J.C. Agajanian's legendary Ascot Park from 1979 through 1982. Amazingly, in the first 71 T.N.G.P. races, only one other driver, Billy Boat of Phoenix, Arizona, has won the race more than twice. Boat scored three successive wins from 1995 through 1997. His win in 1996 came in the only previous Turkey Night Grand Prix contested at The PAS. Californian Jay Drake won the last T.N.G.P. on dirt at the Bakersfield Speedway in 1998. New Castle, Indiana's Caleb Armstrong, who turned 20 earlier this month and who is currently fourth in Mopar USAC National Midget points, is the defending race champion after winning last year's event at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
