The Montpelier Motor Speedway will host Double Midget Features on August 18. The August 4th program began with 10 entries despite the discouraging forecast and radar for the area. Rains began to fall at the speedway prior to Hot Laps; however, track officials were able to get the speedway into lightning fast racing conditions. The speedway was able to complete all heat races before a second storm ended the night events.
Joe Liguori picked up his 3rd heat win of the season, and Pennsylvania’s Brandon Matus piloted the Don Moore entry to the other heat race win. Ligouri was the highest finishing motorcycle powered entry and Stratton Briggs was the highest finishing Focus powered entry. Matus and Liguori will make up the front row for the make up feature on August 18th. With all previous winners absent, there is guaranteed to be the fourth different winner in 5 events for the 2012 season for the August 4th race. Midgets will hot laps, complete the August 4th Make Up Feature, receive their cash payout, and begin a brand new program for August 18th for the rest of the evening. The Montpelier Motor Speedway has only 3 midget races left for the 2012 season – August 18, September 1, and September 15. If you are a midget driver or owner of a legal car in the division, your support of these final races would be greatly appreciated and will help to shape the direction of the series for 2013 in terms of scheduling, payout structure, rules, etc…. On a side note, at this time, there is only one additional midget race scheduled in the entire state for the 2012 season. Nearly to over half of our entries the past two races have been from out of state (Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) |

With very few local cars, that will make it very difficult to run them weekly. I just don't see very many locals building midgets, and you can't depend on teams traveling from over 2 hours away every week. If there was a solid base of 10-15 local cars it could become part of the weekly program. There just aren't that many local cars. Maybe running some open specials next year using the same rules as this year would be a good idea. The first race had a nice turnout, but it was scheduled at the perfect time when nobody else was racing. Once the weekly sprint car tracks get going, car counts for midget races will fall off. 6-8 well planned and promoted specials would be good for next season.

Midget Owner Meet and Greet/Autograph Session
We are asking our Midget owners to please put their cars on display behind the main grandstand during intermission for the fan base and kids to check out. You might want to bring a pen for autographs or candy to pass out to the kids. We are very family friendly track and in fact if you win, expect a lot of kids in some of your winner photos. For a lot of our fans and kids, it will be their first time up close with a midget. Their is a gate north of the restrooms that you can bring your car through as the Thunder Cars complete their heat races. Event Order We will hot lap the Midgets first followed by the other classes. At 6:30, we will complete the Midget make up feature and provide your cash payout at the conclusion. We will mix in the heat races for the new program somewhere in the middle. Support the Midget Program If you are an Indiana car owner of a Midget, Focus, or 1000+CC car, please consider supporting Midget racing in your homestate if possible. Our 1000CC, Focus, and out of state driver support has been really good the past couple of weeks. We would like to get more local and full midgets into the action. We have had a decent first season thus far, but we need your support to make this work. Your support will greatly shape how the series looks during the 2013 season. We should have a decent car count on hand with the bulk of the August 4th competitors returning to complete thier make up features along any new competitors we pick up for the August 18th show. Weather looks great for tomorrow to get in 2 Midget features.
Remember, midget drivers, we would like for you to bring your cars behind the grandstand during intermission. Help educate our fans and kids! |

The Montpelier Motor Speedway had two first time Midget winners last night. Pennsylvania's Brandon Matus, driving for Don Moore, picked up his first career midget win in the the make up feature. If you are not familier with Brandon, Brandon races 410 winged sprints in the Pennsylvania area. Joe Liguori led the bulk of the laps, but Brandon was able to pass Joe on a late race restart. Joe and Brandon were locked into a side by side battle the entire feature. A very good and racey feature!
The second feature also saw a first time winner with Bloomington, Indiana's Michael Koontz picking up the win. Michael won in convincing fashion leading every lap in route to his first career Midget win. Michael is a previous winner at the speedway in a UMRA TQ Midget. Congrats to Brandon and Michael. We have had 5 different winners in 6 races so far this season. Also, thanks to Greg and Alex Watson, Bill and Kent Kreighbaum, and Lynsey Tilton for displaying their midgets at intermission and for allowing so many kids to climb behind the wheel of their race cars. For many kids, it was their first time in a race car. We have two additional midget races for the 2012 season - September 1 and September 15. I will have pictures and full results up on website this evening. Thanks everyone for your support. We had a nice crowd on hand for racing last night.
