I talked A.J. into going up to the "RUMBLE" with us this weekend. To do this he had to take several days out of his "Tulsa Chili bowl" prep time and miss his birthday at home for the second year in a row. Last year I conned him into going to the Shootout with me.
We showed up late as is my usual style. It is kinda of hard to race and run a business at the same time but what the heck we try. There was also the short side trip to Chicago because his navigator "me" thought he knew the way around Indy, and I realy did about 30 years ago. We get signed in late and hit the starter button nothing happens parr for the course. We get a push start and 2 laps later it was WOT. I prayed that 50 wt. Lucas Racing oil would some how do its job at 30 deg F. with no warm up. We survived but my dirt t-bar selection was just a tad soft. Doug, my son did a pretty good job of driving the thing on 2 wheels for that practice session. We came in charged the spare battery and installed coil over springs to help my tired old t-bars keep up. We went out for the last hot laps it ran one lap and quit. We later found one of my super hi-tec quick battery plugs had corroded. Now it's time to go out for our next hot lap session other people called it qualification we called it hot laps. We kept it on all 4 wheel's this time and timed 4th quick which is really good, the only thing Doug does worse than qualify is draw pill's. Back in the pits we are working on our set up and old A.J. is running around helping other teams with the same problems we were having, soft bars and softer tires. For a little while I thought we were just one big race team working on a common problem. Thank God A.J. was there or the show might have looked a lot different, kinda of "Messy" with a bunch of flips and things. We managed to do the whole show with nobody on their heads, and that in it's self is saying something. we finished 4th not bad, but not what we were shooting for Lyn Ambrose won it with Lindsay Tilton setting him up in her sights only to be caught short by a shortened race. Saturday is a new deal we got all the deamons worked out. There will be no hot laps just qualification and racing. That dont sound too bad, we got it all figured out and ready to set a new track record. Coke sirup changes more and faster than dirt ever thought about. Big cars put rubber down and go-karts must pick it up. Went out with last night's set up and here comes that bicycle again we timed 6th quick, oh-well that aint too bad. Lindsay goes out to take her laps (she is a pretty sharp chick, she also drives a Felker FSC chassis and sets fast time and a new track record of 8.85 seconds getting a little closer to the midgets time but we are doing it with gumball 10 year old dirt tires. Part of the secret to this race is to find the oldest and hardest dirt tires you can. I think the Ambrose Bros. won that award Im not sure but I think the baked them for a few hours in mom's oven, they were really really hard, and I wouldn't put anything past their dad Ron. I think we started the heat inside 3rd row took the green and coming out of turn 4 a car spun Doug jumped his tire shot up in the air about 5 feet and came down inside the infield. He drove around the infield 2 or three time waiting for the yellow flag but it did not come out and rather taking the chance of a real bad wreck he parked in the infield and watched the race. Now old DAD is a little piffed. I think we are back at old "Wonder Valley" at Salem (wonder what they are going to do next). I told Doug looked like he would start the tail and to get up front any way he could not my usual advice. I usually say have fun be carefull and bring it back in one piece. Line up comes out. This time they invert the top 6 qualifier that puts Doug on the pole. Now I know we are at "Wonder Valley" and it is working in our favor for once. Doug started on the pole jumped out to an early lead and stayed away from the old white tire magnets that Tony sat up in the turns. He drove a real safe race and kept his cool which is a pretty hard thing to do when you have the Bros. Ambrose behind you. Every thing we did that weekend turned to crap except that last lap of the last race. We got loaded up went to Quacker Steak and Lube. I drank one of those 100 ounce gas pumps filled with beer to celebrate our win and the New Year and that is the last thing I remember until the next morning. Thanks to Tony Barharst for letting us race this year, thanks to Ron Bounds and his son Chris for all your help at the track, thanks to A.J. Felker for all the work above and beyond the job of a chassis builder and missing another birthday at home, thanks to the pit stewards for not getting me kicked out for doing all those wheelies on my wheel chair and keeping us all in line, and using an old Smoke's line thanks to all the 1000cc sprint crew's that showed up to race--- and the crew's that did not, well thanks, sure wish you had been there because you really missed out on some real neat races and quality bounding time in the pits with other crew's and the chance to do it again. Ok but how about my king pin clips we loaned you guys. I have never raced with a bunch of people like the MMSA. Bill May has really done a good job of raising all of us up to be decent fun loving adults. Well "I" might back slide ever once in a while but then I'm working on my fourth childhood.
DAD himself PS Without those pad's we would have been in trouble, we used lots of brake up there. Mental note indoor racing, need power steering 4 wheel brakes and slicks would probably get us down to midget times. watching news now we got out of there just in time "BLIZARD" DAD himself ![]() ![]() |

Hey, I thought you were an OK guy until the Blizzard comment. It is also a whole lot colder than last weekend, too. Enjoy your win!

Congratulations to Doug Jones and the Dad's team on the win.
A.J Felker fielded a sprint car in the RCA Dome for Dave Darland back in 2002, and has run the 600's with us. Thanks A.J. for helping the other teams.. Good to have you back. Best of luck to A.J. at the Chili Bowl. See you guys at Eldora when you run there. Tony Barhorst www.rumbleseries.com
