Thirty drivers representing seven states signed in for the evening's competition on the Orrville, Ohio oval and fans looked on as Russiaville, Indiana driver Dustin Smith piloted the Lee's Hydraulics #37 to victory over local hero Rob Chaney from nearby Millersburg. A twenty-two car field took the green flag for the 25 lap A-Main paced by front row drivers Chaney and another local favorite, Danny Mumaw who was making his first career non wing start. Chaney, a former USAC Mopar Thunder winner at Eldora, set the early pace from the pole but 4th starting Smith wasted little time in slipping through to the runner-up spot. An early caution flew on lap #3 when former USAC Rookie of the Year Mark Cassella of Weirton, West Virginia coasted to a stop on the frontstretch. On the restart, Aaron Middaugh, Bryce Dickson, and Jason Soudrette all tangled in turn one, eliminating all three drivers. Once finally back under green, Chaney led lap #4 but Smith got the run he needed and threw a turn one slide job across Chaney's #45 car. Off turn #2, cars raced 3 wide for the lead as 6th starting Sheldon Haudenschild flexed some early muscle in the #93 car. But Smith proved too powerful as his car rocketed off turn 2 with the lead. As the laps clicked away, Smith began to stretch his lead to a 10 car length advantage by the halfway point with Chaney in tow along with the fast closing California Kid, Justin Grant who was blasting his right rear off the Wayne County cushion. Haudenschild and Mumaw completed the top 5 at the halfway mark. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Fenton, Michigan driver Steve Irwin, a 3 time Michigan Traditional Sprint champion was charging through the field in a march to the top 5. The race's only red flag flew on lap 18 when Dallas Hewitt and Kory Crabtree tangled in turn four with Hewitt winding up on his top. The ensuing restart saw Sheldon Haudenschild, in only his second ever non wing start, running fourth. But Haud got sideways off turn 2, spinning into the infield and striking an infield tire marker, eliminating him from competition. The final seven laps reeled off without a caution, as Chaney closed up on Smith bringing the fans to their feet on several occasions. Fans were treated to a dazzling display of sprint car driving as Chaney and Grant rode the cushion in the three way battle for the lead, but Dustin Smith proved that this was his night as he held on for the $1,500 win. Chaney held on for 2nd over a hard charging Grant who was 3rd. Danny Mumaw had an impressive 4th place finish for a non wing rookie and Steve Irwin charged from 16th to finish 5th. Landon Simon had a quiet, yet consistent run all night long in scoring a smooth 6th place finish with Kirk Jeffries, Mike Galajda, Luke Hall, and Tom Rhoades rounding out the top 10 finishers. Four drivers passed 10 or more cars in the main event, but it was Galajda who earned the Indy Race Parts $50 cash "Hard Charger" award by passing 13 cars in his charge from 21st to 8th place. The E A Home Supply $100 cash "Steel Block Award" for the highest finishing steel motor went to 9th place finisher Luke Hall. Hall defeated a field of 8 steel blocks, 4 of which made the main event. The Earl's Indy $100 certificate "Hard Luck Award" went to Polk, Ohio driver Aaron Middaugh who was caught up in incidents on the night. Tire bonuses went to 3rd place Justin Grant who earned a free right rear tire courtesy of Hoosier Tire Midwest for being the highest finishing car on all Hoosier tires. The American Racer $100 certificate went to 11th place finisher Chuck Wilson and the Goodyear $100 certificate went to 19th place Aaron Middaugh. Heat race wins went to Dallas Hewitt, Rob Chaney, Dustin Smith, and Sheldon Haudenschild. Chad Wilson scored an impressive win in the 10 lap B-Main that saw Jason Soudrette of Cincinnati, Ohio drive the Spille #71 from 13th to 4th to earn a transfer to the A-main. The B-Main also featured an exciting last lap battle that saw Tom Rhoades steal the last transfer spot from rookie driver Lance Webb who was impressive in his first ever non wing start. Complete results can be found on the BOSS results page on the website at http://www.buckeyesprints.com . The BOSS series would like to thank all the drivers who supported the event as well as the fans who helped pack the place! An extra thank you to the staff at Wayne County Speedway, Promoters Jason and Kristin Flory, and the McIlvane family for hosting the event. |
