how to get there will mater where you are staying for the race but traffic will be a problem unless you go to the Track very early which would be best Take time to go to the museum inside the track between turns 1 & 2 a must see and just take your seat and enjoy all the sights & sounds around you and you will understand why it is the Greatest single day sporting event in the world

Welcome to the USA and the 2011 Indy 500.

I would just agree with all the ones that posted above me have said to enhance your Indy 500 experience.

2011 Indy 500 will be my 52nd straight year of going to the race.

I have a feeling you are a BIG Scott Dixon fan. Am I right? Dixie is a good guy.

Have fun! Enjoy!

Indy 500 week is a great week of fun in Indiana. My first tip for you would be to make sure you are here for the weekend. Catch more than just the 500 and you will learn alot about the local race fans. 1 race that is a must to see is the Little 500 @ Anderson Speedway. Its a short 45min. drive from Indy. After the race get back to you hotel in Indy and get some sleep. Head to the IMS early the next morning. Leaving the Hotel at 8 should work pretty well. (once you know where you are staying, ask guys on here for directions to the track. They will tell you the best way in.) Plan on tail gateing. We typically drive within a block of the track and park in someones yard. Now time to have fun. Wear some good shoes and walk around. Check out all of the Partys. Remember you are there to have a good time, and so is everyone around you. If you need something just ask around. We park in either turn 3 or 4 depending on tickets. Always have a great time. Watch the race, then have some more fun. If you see something interesting Go check it out. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys for your help. There are some great ideas there......I'm a big fan of Midgets,Sprintcars and the Silver Crown cars, will surely be catching some of the other Open Wheel racing around the 500.Was in the Midwest in 2003 and also last year, have visited the IMS 3 times but never done the race. This will be the first visit for my son.
Its getting to the track, how difficult it will be on the day,and at what time to get there that I'm curious about.
We will maybe using the Bus or a hire car.
Any other helpful info, will be glad to know.

I have done the bus routes multiple years and it is a pretty good way to go. Some bus lanes are kept clear of regular race day traffic. If you get seats towards turn 1 IMO this is a good way to go. Experiencing the party that is the Indy 500 is also a huge part of the experience. My daughter got her first one last year and loved it.
